A fun day of training in Harriman designed by Ali even if on a cold side ~36F. We first did a corridor O on the Surbridge and then I shadowed Giacomo on a middle course on the Rockhouse. He did pretty well and it wouldn't surprise me if he makes the Team this year. Got attacked by ticks, black, red, dotted all kinds...

Running 12:00 [1] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

A really easy jog in Verona park at night followed by a few reps of pull-ups and push-ups. Few things felt awkward including the bottom of my right foot, so will be watching it for now.

Orienteering race (US Champs Day 2) 1:06:32 [5] 10.5 km (6:20 / km) +310m 5:31 / km

Nothing like a little drama for me on the course. I started out determined to have a clean race as my legs let me know of yesterday's effort. Had a small bubble on #4 as I looped around a bit short of the bag. Then had a huge meltdown on the long leg to #8 as I run up the re-entrant before the one where the control was and spent sometime figuring out why I wan't seeing it. Probably cost me ~3.5 min. right there. Was still thinking about it on the way to #9 evaluating what adjustments I needed to make to salvage this race. And then the "Engine" returned. My legs opened up and I felt light and fast. Controls started to come really fast and I just couldn't let it stop. Pressed hard all the way to the finish where I patiently awaited for Ken, who started 6 minutes after me, to come in any time now and claim the victory. And he did, but only 30 or so seconds late!
This was a week of two totally different races for me and I sure am happy with the outcome. Thanks to others for keeping it close and making it a one nice orienteering weekend.

Orienteering (US Champs Day1) 1:18:51 [4] 10.3 km (7:39 / km) +273m 6:46 / km

Oh man, a really really tough race for me. It felt as if I was tortured and then allowed to escape after I crossed the finish line. Just really exhausted. The course felt a lot longer and hillier than parameters may suggest. I started by screwing up the first 2 bags before settling in. Got a glimpse of Keith Andersen who started 3 min. before me on #1 and then on # 6, and caught up to him on #7 by going to the right of the big hill. He then ran away from me by choosing better lines, however, I passed him somewhere on the way to #10 without knowing it. Because I was the last starter, I haven't seen anybody else. This race somewhat reminded me of the long at Alabama fundraiser back in (2004?), which was also tough and hilly. Surprisingly, ended up edging Ken by 14sec, only because he gave it to me by messing up the next to the last control by 3 min. Tomorrow will be another battle for me, hopefully, I will come out with my gunz blazing...
