Cycling 1:30:00 [3] 40.0 km (2:15 / km)

Khardongla Pass - the world's highest driveable rd.

Mountain biking day before heading off trekking next week.....and what a cracker it was.

The plan was straightforward. Drive from Leh (3500m) to Khardongla pass (5600m) and MTB home. I was a little unsure of going so high only 4 days after leaving sea level, but was glad to feel good all day in the end.

The drive up was hilarious with the usual Indian traffic transferred to a narrow mountain side rd. And it got super mental after a road closure brought a large group of cars together.

We arrived at a checkpoint where the rd was closed waiting 2hrs to allow a military convoy thru in the other direction. When it reopened it was like a car rally with vans and motorbikes racing for the top and horns blaring....even when the rd got pretty darn rough, with snow melt rivers down the middle...the passing moves were very impressive.

The descent is 40km of narrow winding rd with steeep drop off and no verge back to Leh, the first part being really quite rough. The Mtb was faster over this than any motor vehicle and was super fun before eventually turning into bitumen for some hairpin fun back in to town.

The scenery was unbelievable, and the vibe crazy india with donkeys and cows wandering in the middle of the rd looking very relaxed while trucks have em about half a foot clearance, and cars charging at blind corners with a loud horn a signal for anyone coming the other way.

One of my all time great rides for the location, sheer variety and silliness.

Note

Adventure time. It's been a while since I've gone travelling with a backpack. Hoping it is still as fun as I remember.

After a quick overnight in an absurdly good (and cheap) Delhi airport hotel with one my all time great hitel breakfasts, we flew up to Leh the capital of Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas. Quite the exciting flight in with the surrounding hills above the plane on approach.

Leh is at about 3600m, and have thus spent the subsequent 24 hours doing nothing....was feeling the altitude lethargy yesterday. Like I'd been for a long run.

Will try and head out for a stroll today. Leh looks pretty crazy. Mud streets and cows wandering everywhere.

Running 45:00 [3]

Squeezed in a quick set of wharfies to a very busy day.

1:58, 1:55, 1:53, 1:53, 1:50 on approximately even recovery. Pretty quick for me - I think the last one is a wharf PB (was pushing the last couple). Pretty happy with that given I'm probably 3kg over 'race' weight.

Running 50:00 [3]

Lunch run at 4pm...a symptom of pre Holiday busy-ness. A slow jog around the wharves and I felt tired. I initially put down the feeling of 'wouldnt it be nice to have a little nap in the gutter over there' to hunger flat, but had to let that theory go when faced with the stark reality of a large pizza for lunch.

More likely just a bit knackered from living the Andy Hill life (run 50k and then go out every night for the next week..with the end of school term activities, a couple of birthdays, collecting Annika from a formal in the city at 1am etc keeping things interesting).
