Hellas Mastloppet Paradiset, ÖM9 11.1km (9/10)

This is one of the 2 informals I really look forward to each year, mostly because it's Paradise but also because the courses are usually more interesting from that which one usually expects from Summer Series events. Unfortunately it turned out to be a bit of a disaster on many levels.

I knew there was a good reason I saved my energy yesterday, a surprise long course available. I should have looked closer at the results/course before I started however and chosen the 7.7km one instead.

The course was interesting but it visited a lot of the rougher, greener areas of the map. On top of that the blueberry and marsh had grown up, as one should expect in mid-July. Still fantastic, detailed forest however.

Only scrappy, small mistakes until number 11 where I made a schoolboy error and got confused over an unmarked electric fence. It did sort of follow the same shape as a marked fence a little further down the hill but I should of known more exactly where I was. No one else on the course got quite so confused as I did, didn't exactly help the reputation of English orienteers here, sorry about that. 4.5 mins lost.

Really sad to report my left-side started playing up after that, both the glute and the knee. The slower, hill training that I've been doing puts me into a false sense of security, that it is in fact better than it really is. Plus I can't wait to believe it is better so I can not be bothered to stretch and do core exercises. Arse-backwards I know, depressing.

A small miss on 14, a more significant one on 18 and very strange routes to 19 and the finish combined with the disaster that was 11 to make a pretty disappointing technical performance overall. Plus I ran into a branch on route to the last control, blood everywhere.

I do feel like I need to grow up a bit, be more real about things. I mean what was I looking forward to so much? Can't say I really enjoyed myself, something wrong there.

Much better tonight, much cooler, more energy. I could have done much more than this, it's just that i didn't want to.

It's tempting to say that I'm over the left-side problems. I'm sure had I massaged/stretched Fri/Sat that my knee wouldn't have felt slightly worse by this morning but there weren't any problems during the run or afterwards. Haven't felt any dodgyness in the left glute for a while now.
