Running tempo (xc/terrain) 46:25 [4] 5.6 km (8:17 / km)

Another benchmark test, this time in terrain. Once again from home, the LL event course where the start is 30secs jog from my front door.

I've re-run this several times since the event, hence not considered orienteering training anymore. Saying that I still messed up number 5, losing about a minute but regardless of that the above time is 3:15 better than my previous best.

Felt much more comfortable in terrain than the other day on trails as expected. Was fighting off a stitch again in the middle of the course but not as bad as on Thu - don't really know what is up with that, Beth and the boys have colds so maybe resources are limited just now.

Maybe not this year but I think getting this run down to under 40mins is a realistic goal. The remaining five minutes to beat Gustav Bergman's time from the event itself is almost certainly beyond me, regardless of knowing all the perfect routes.

Running warm up/down (terrain/xc) 6:45 [2]

Jog back home from the finish.

Running tempo (road/xc) 28:40 [4] 6.0 km (4:47 / km)

Short route from home, as fast as possible to see where I am - a personal best by 5 seconds.

So I must be in ok shape? No it's just that I've been in a consistently poor shape since I moved here in Nov 2012.

As expected it felt clunky running at speed, especially on the easy/flat bits at the start. Didn't manage my breathing very well and got a stitch about half-way around that I just about managed for the rest of the route.

Not that enjoyable in conclusion but I feel it won't be long before I can run more freely and start to get the times down providing I start some conditioning work. A warm-up might have been a good idea.

Note

I've started to feel a bit more motivated about training properly again and of course what better way to reinforce that than an internet training blog.

The baby has been sleeping through the night fairly well the last couple of months and now the clocks have gone forward so regular training is starting to seem possible for the first time in a long while.

Hmm goals, better have some I guess. I've just read a pessimistic (jealous even, perhaps) BBC news article about Tiger Woods and how he can't come to terms with not being elite anymore. Not so relevant for my situation, I was never orienteering at an elite level, perhaps close in 2009 when I was 32. Regardless of that I always had a dream/fantasy of being competitive at an elite level and I guess I have to understand now that I didn't realise that goal and move on. It's not all bad though, orienteering is a sport where competition exists at all ages right?

The short term goal is to simply solve the physical problems, year after year I feel more and more awkward, clunky and unnatural when running, esp on roads/easy trails. So flexibility and core strength become more and more important as I get older. No surprises there.

Medium term I'd like to work towards a good performance at the Stockholm district champs at the end of the Summer. No fussy training plan, just keep things varied and increase the hours gradually if possible.
