Orienteering race (Forest) 1:58:10 [4] **** 14.7 km (8:02 / km) +400m 7:05 / km
spiked:20/27c shoes: adidas swoop 2 - 1st pair

Himottu. 480/1358 (Anders Nordberg won in 1:22:03). Wasn't navigating properly at all and any spikes that weren't really easy must've followed/fluked. Whenever got on my own was just guessing. Made two small route choice errors on 5 and overtook the same guy three times. Followed the pack to 6 way off line to a large pond and was very hesitant from there. Ran around in circles at 9 until eventually applied some strategy to find it. Missed 13 badly - relocated off two other controls. 16 was terrible - 5mins down on the Ravinen 2 runners split time just guessing. 18 got stuck in a load of crap - bad route choice, actually no route choice. Ran around the road on 26 missing what was obviously a motorway thru the green/marsh. Estimate 13mins total time loss.

Wasn't expecting to better my position from last year cos it was much more technical and only lost a couple of minutes so my running speed wasn't so much of a disadvantage. Just typical that this year I make loads more errors when there were a lot more line features and less detail. By far my worst performance out of the three years - quite disappointed...

Running long (Road/XC) 1:31:00 [2] 16.7 km (5:27 / km) +285m 5:01 / km
shoes: nike air tri-d kutu

Easy run around the Nacka Reserve trails with Krügerol. Took a map and used it well apart from this one bit where we had to climb up between some cliffs to get back on track. Hot and sunny by the time we finished.

Note

Recently I have been tempted to moan about a few things Swedish. Last night was the final straw and now it's gonna get it... I have to list all the shite things about living in Sweden...

1) DRIVING: While driving along the city ring road (which has a seriously slow speed limit of 43mph) I came across a 31mph section. No, not roadworks - an actual permanently signed section. I mean what a f-ing joke a motorway limited to 31mph. Jesus. It's a consistent thing though - even in the country you will never get an A road equivalent with a speed limit of more that 43mph whereas in Britain (although I concede a lot of de-restricted roads have 40mph and 30mph bits creeping in all the time) we get 60mph.

It's not as if the low limits make any difference either I still see people all over the shop who have wrapped their motor around another car or against the barrier. But then that is probably nothing to do with the speed that people drive more like the way that people drive. I am in constant fear of someone just driving into the side of me pretty much all the time. People drive in Sweden like they walk and talk - with no consideration or etiquette whatsoever. The fact that there is no word for please in Swedish says it all - I thought people drove like wankers in Britain (including me - a little). You ain't seen nothing.

DRINKING: So now I can't even drink one pint and drive without the risk of being jailed and the key thrown away. Ditto again comments about people crashing. And if I just want one beer or cider late at night and I don't have one in the fridge or want to go to late night bars I now f-ing can't have one. In Britain I would just drive to the local 24hr supermarket, come back 30mins in the freezer and mmm. So you go to the nearest System Blag It and what do you know it's closed cos they all have different opening hours. Some close at 8pm, some at 7pm and no opening hours on the website - you would think Sweden being so anal about being efficient that they would publish them to save people time energy and money. So you think well 3.5% is better than nothing and try and find a general shop that is open late - all the best with that even in the capital of Scandinavia. Useless.

SHOPPING: So if you are lucky enough for the shop you have gone to to actually be open you have to pay a lot more for not only the product (especially if it has been imported) but also VAT as well. The stuff you are buying is not as good either. Cos they don't make much stuff here at all (apart from far too sweet cider and bad chocolate) virtually everything is imported and is therefore less fresh than what you would buy in Britain. So fruit and veg in the supermarkets have less of a shelf life and pretty much everything with a best b4 date goes out of date quicker than if buying it in Britain.

COURTESY: Don't expect anyone to thank you for giving way or holding a door (in fact if you are a man and they are a woman they will think you are being sexist) and don't expect anyone to give way or hold a door.

There are some good things though, like the forests and some of the girls are quite nice looking. Although are they that interesting or exciting? The public transport is not bad but is only cheap if you use it all the time and is only really efficient depending on where you live and whether it is rush hour or not. If it is not rush hour I have found driving to be both cheaper and much quicker.

Hashing around Stora Mossen (4). Purposely put a little less effort in 2nite than Saturday but just like Saturday had some indigestion problems - I wudda thought 5hours in between eating my chilli lunch and running wudda been enuf but no. It was so bad I even got a down down for it after a timely chilli and garlic flavour burp whilst running alongside one of the female hashers.

Core Stability (Floor) 21:00 [1]

SMR and relevant stretches first, then twice thru core routine, then 22 13 press ups with balance exercises and had to call it a day there cos needed to get to o-ing. Did have a one minute work call break in between the sets of press ups so maybe can't compare today's second set of 13 with Saturday's 12.

Running warm up/down (Road/XC) 2:45 [2]
shoes: adidas swoop 2 - 1st pair

Feel a bit silly logging this small run to registration and start but hey I timed it so there.

Orienteering race (Forest) 57:31 [4] ***** 8.3 km (6:56 / km)
spiked:16/20c shoes: adidas swoop 2 - 1st pair

Norra Djurgarden. 4/16 (Ulrik Englund won in 54:04). This area is split up by lots of parkland and a few big lakes which meant no long legs (except my own of course) - no point there would be no route choice. Nice runnable woodland adjacent to the University Halls and Campus. Lots of big paths disecting the area and loadsa tiny tracks (most marked) esp near the campus.

Felt physically good but not fresh. A few very small misses on 3, 6 and 12 but lost a whole minute on 14 where I was too short and had got myself lost in all the little tracks. Made worse by (once I had relocated and entered the circle) a control lower down on the spur from a different event without a punch. Clean from there - all splits 9secs or less off the fastest leg time except the big uphill leg to 18 (still a weakness for me) and the run-in that I lost 30secs on lol! Might start having to include the run-in in the spiked/total fields above at this rate.

Once finished met up with this guy Bhavik that I met at the hash after party on Saturday and showed him the ropes (he had never orienteered b4) around one of the shorter courses. I recommend checking out his website (he likes rowing)...
