Cycling long (Road) 3:52:50 [2] 94.7 km (2:28 / km)
Bristol to Blanford Forum with G-Thing. Got up at 06:45 and did some final packing and bike checks, got a phone call just after 8 from G's wife Tash saying he was too pissed to cycle to Bath let alone Bournemouth so I went back to bed. Got another phone call at 09:30 from G himself and it was back on! He eventually turned up at my gaff at 10:30 and stank of something not entirely unlike whisky bumping into doors and dropping bags etc. After drving over to his place (Tash drove, G just shouted out the window at people, generally) and packing the car we had a coffee and set off about 11:30, some 3 hours late.
We had both done this b4, G 2 or 3 times and me once each way - we agreed that it was easier to do this way as it gets the Mendips out the way first. It still doesn't stop it from hurting like a bitch tho. By the time we were 30km into it approaching Shepton Mallet I knew I wasn't going to arrive in Poole all that well, if at all. Then there was a lot of down, some down and some more down and did I mention some down? This lifted our spirits and I felt confident even when we eventually went back uphill at Castle Cary. Then the hills chilled Winston, and the next 15km went really quick under the A303 (half-way point) and on towards Sturminster Newton. We stopped a few km b4 and had a Nutri-Grain and a Jimmy and unfortunately had to admit that we weren't going to make it within daylight hours. A problem for me without any lights so a phonecall was made and we were being picked up the other side of Blanford Forum just over 20km from our destination. Just as well really cause the way I felt on the last few hills I think I wudda been walking.
Full respect to G considering he had loads less sleep, loads more alcohol and we only did the equivalent of just over half of the cycle ride in his Ironman triathlon he does every year, oh and he does 3.8km of swimming b4 and 26.2miles of running after. To be fair to me tho I have only been cycling again since Monday and my bike is a fitness bike and his is a racer - much more aerodynamic and slightly lighter.
