Orienteering race (Long) 1:27:51 [5] **** 7.5 km (11:43 / km) +1083ft 9:36 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Actual distance: 6.1mi (9.81k - 131% sheesh) ... so I feel pretty good with my /k time.

4 hours of sleep hurt some (thanks partying kids!), but not being in shape was what really left me out of gas on the hills. A couple of absolutely silly mistakes, the most costly to the LAST control (22), where I had to climb an extra 4 or 5 (5m!) contours. Oof. More analysis shortly!

The lack of an awards ceremony was nice in that it motivated me to get HOME by 2pm (150 miles away!), but it was also a bit anticlimactic.

USMAOC cadets sure put on a nice event. The weather was hot, hot, hot (particularly in that it snuck up and pounced).

Orienteering race (Sprint) 21:02 [5] *** 2.8 km (7:31 / km) +289ft 6:30 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

USMAOC Sprint! Had to choose trainers or Inov-8s ... went with the trainers which was a good choice except on a few leafy dirt areas from 4 to 7. Felt slow, it was blazing hot out, but a really fun event to watch and be a part of. I'd love to do 2 of these per week during the week -- they would really help clean up my 'process', as well as get me pushing myself harder, which is difficult when out in the woods with no one but the chipmunks to observe.
9 AM

Orienteering race (Middle) 52:48 [5] **** 4.3 km (12:17 / km) +558ft 10:15 / km
slept:7.0 shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Actual distance: 3.19mi (5.13k - 119%)

Huge parallel error at #1 cost me a lot (more analysis soon), and set me up for insecurity and hesitation (a double-edged sword) for the rest of the Middle. Once I realized that the terrain was ACCURATE on the map, things started to roll a bit better. But I kept finding myself standing still. Ugh.

My class was small and I was stuck in the middle with speedyj and Sergiy (HVO) way ahead of me, and the rest way behind, which wasn't very motivating.

The woods were superb compared to PA/NJ/DE/MD. I love West Point.

Note
(rest day)

Fished in Stone Harbor with hughmac3 in the surf. Beautiful day, only ONE smallish bluefish in a few hours. Fun fight on the noodle rod! I'll be trying that more in the future. You can cast it a mile.

Then drove up to my room at Bear Mountain Inn, Scenic Overlook. AWESOME ... until Saturday night when the frat/sorority kids moved in at 12:30am and partied until 4:30am. Oof. I would still stay there again, and next time call the front desk until things were settled. I figured it was payback for my own rude indiscretions of my twenties. :)

I missed Juliet & June. If I had known the weather was going to be so perfect I definitely would have dragged them along to play lakeside at Buckner.
