shoes: New Balance Vazee Summit 10 2E

Bleh, felt lousy on this one. Cold & tired the whole time. Gut hurt. Hungry. Whaaa, whaaa. Failed to HTFU. Sitll tired from race, I think. Gave up after 4 (really gave up after 3), instead of the planned 5.

Running hills (11 x Hills) 53:47 intensity: (28:07 @1) + (21:14 @2) + (4:25 @3) + (1 @4) 3.71 mi (14:30 / mi) +1235ft 11:01 / mi
ahr:138 max:155 shoes: New Balance Vazee Summit 10 2E

A few hills ... legs still tired from last weekend's race, but good to do a few hills and then some field work. Simulating a loop race where I went home and then back out. Tough! It was pretty cold and very windy on the field. Got it done.

Running warm up/down (7 x Field Laps) 38:29 [1] 3.78 mi (10:11 / mi) +25ft 10:07 / mi

Running warm up/down (6 x Field Laps) 33:24 [1] 3.29 mi (10:09 / mi) +22ft 10:05 / mi
shoes: New Balance RC1400v4 10D

Easy few evening laps before the snow (!) tomorrow. Which is crazy, because I got warm enough to take off my shirt.

Felt pretty sluggish from the race still. Contemplated ES some, thinking about how a survival pace for that race is half the stunningly easy pace I was going. Food for thought. Need to get back in the super-slow mindset, but it's hard with shorter races. I think I need to start with the night hills. That will slow me down. ;)

Running race (Naked Bavarian 40mi) 7:12:06 [3] 41.63 mi (10:23 / mi) +3196ft 9:41 / mi
weight:159lbs shoes: New Balance MT101 v1 (10 2E)

Naked Bavarian 40mi -- actually at least 41.63, likely a mile or two more. Happily I knew that going in, though.

The not-so-excellent: a very cold 8am start (19F), and even though it got up to 35F, it was quite windy at points (up on hilltops/spurs, in valleys facing certain directions, crossing bridges). I was considering this training ('cause of the dearth of it in my life these days), and planned to work on pacing. I did a poor job of that, getting sucked along by the crowd, and then chatting with a couple of other runners for 12 miles for the second half of lap one. 5:19 first 50k, even with my wise slowdown after the 1/2. Oops! It was really at least 4k feet of climb, if not more.

The pretty good stuff: dealing with too-hot/too-cold was a good distraction. No real issues other than the way-too-fast first 1/2. A bit of gut and hip aches, but I'm getting good at either ignoring or working through them. I may have broken 7hrs if I'd gone > 3.5 on the first lap. Probably still could have, but it really was training, and I relaxed into the second half and had some fun. About a 1/2 of a (very good) beer with 10 miles to go. Hanging with and chatting with those I was passing. :) Even with the poor start, I was never passed. People really pace poorly, if my poor pacing didn't result in any passes in the 2nd half.

Final result: 21st of 119 starters. I was hoping for < 20th, so not bad. I don't know how far off I was. Only saw (and passed) two others during the last 10 miles. Only Maggie Guterl (Western States 21:50 last year) beat me from the women, so that's pretty good. I don't know by how much, though. She's pretty amazing!

Note

Meant to run a bit this week. Guess I'm tapered, anyway. :) Not looking forward to sub-20F start tomorrow.
