weight:155.2lbs shoes: TNF Ultra Cardiac (10.5D)

Moar Shooz!! Initial thoughts later, but pretty darned sweet, I think. A great all around distance trail shoe.

Insanely beautiful day. Could be a lap PR?

Happy Easter. Didn't go as far as I wanted: Easter. :) But the new shoes worked out pretty well -- really have a fast feel and great rock plate. More on that later this evening. Off to hughmac3's for Easter Dinner!

Running (12 x Cunningham Field Lap) 59:12 [3] 6.28 mi (9:26 / mi) +30ft 9:23 / mi

Beautiful day, 54F and super sunny.

Feeling crap from JKoczak's birthday fun last evening, but got out for a few laps in my new shoes:

New Balance MT101v1

Review: New Balance MT101 v1 (Initial Impressions)

From the New Balance website:

PRODUCT DETAILS

For the serious trail runner, the more challenging the terrain, the better. Now there’s a shoe tough enough to keep up. The New Balance 101 trail running shoe for men is low-profile, ultra-lightweight and made for the trail. With ROCK STOP for added forefoot protection, no-sew mesh overlays, interlocking Sure-Laces to help keep out debris and an ACTEVA LITE midsole for premium comfort, it’s ready for your longest-mileage trail runs.
  • 10 mm drop: due to variances created during the development and manufacturing processes, all references to 10 mm drop are approximate
  • EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate) foam collar helps reduce moisture absorption
  • No-sew material application
  • Synthetic/mesh upper

Bought for $60 on Running Warehouse, size US 10 2E <-- sweet!

These are a re-release of a very popular shoe from 2010 time frame.

Taking them out of the box, they seemed VERY stiff and hard compared to most of my other shoes. Kind of in the Inov-8 MudClaw 'cleat-like' class. I was worried that they would be too stiff, particularly for road. Interestingly they don't seem to have much in the way of bumpers ... we'll see how they handle instep rocks.

There are a lot of separate materials inside (overlapping layers, built-in footbed, etc), which also makes me worry, but I didn't feel any of them with the shoes on my feet.

They have a 7.5oz claimed weight, and were 218g (7.7oz) + 228g (8oz) weighed, so pretty true to advertised, but oddly large difference between the two shoes, which makes me worry about quality control.

Putting them on, I noticed the 'Sure-Laces'. The laces are rippled, so they really grip each other nicely. Excellent touch.

They felt much better than expected on pavement. Did a few miles on grass and they felt pretty good, possibly a bit 'thin' for ultras ... tomorrow's long will tell. They are at least a solid mid-distance trail/road hybrid. I wasn't expecting them to be good on the road at all, but these will likely be my go-to on/off combo shoes if they pan out for distance.

If they do, at that price I'll be ordering more!

weight:153.8lbs shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

Bleh, felt pretty crappy on this one. But persevered. Hips, groin, shoulder ... sheesh. I started trying to focus on what didn't hurt. My feet! They really have been doing well. Hooray for strong feet! I gave them a nice pedicure and callus shave yesterday, too. Getting rid of the ball-of-foot calluses was a great idea, as it's a common 'under callus' blister spot.

I had the absolutely worst song stuck in my head, which I think was contributing more than you would expect.

A solid week. 5 weeks till Hyner, so trying to make it count.

Snow! What? Warmest February on record (and warmest winter), and snow in March. Up side down! Real snow tomorrow, apparently. We'll see.

Nice to get out in the woods. Thanks hughmac3 again for being our kid watcher.

My shoulder is still tender. Drat.

Quick 6 laps ... squeezed for time.

Shoulder still sore, but should recover with nothing permanent left behind, I think.

Note

All-in-all an excellent training day, capping off a solid training week. A lot of O miles, a lot of controls, in tough woods. Practice with fuel / hydration. Hot dogs! :) Got to see my O buds, which was really excellent.

Planned on all 6 races, but only had the time for 4 (even starting Orange at 1:40 got a frown or two ;)), as there were some issues with the computer which slowed up my Red > Green transition.

Thanks to JKoczak for watching the girls all day while I did this. You're the best, J!

Note

Shoulder is beginning to bother me pretty badly. Darn. I6 ingested.
10 AM

Running warm up/down (Warmup) 1:48 [1] 0.18 mi (9:59 / mi) +43ft 8:09 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

A bit of warm up ...

Orienteering (Hibernia Red) 1:02:57 [4] *** 5.28 mi (11:55 / mi) +630ft 10:43 / mi
spiked:10/13c shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

First of 4 courses today, I tried to keep the pace up but I knew I had more to go (planned on all 6), so that kept me cautious. Still fell once, hard, in rocks, but managed to miss them, I think. Gonna be achy! ;)

Really nice to see my O buds out there.

Orienteering race (Hibernia Green) 42:02 [4] 3.58 mi (11:45 / mi) +328ft 10:48 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

Green. Went well, only a few muffs. Not a huge advantage to have done red.

Orienteering race (Hibernia Brown) 37:52 [4] 2.99 mi (12:40 / mi) +337ft 11:27 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

Brown was fun! Physically tough, beginning to wear me down.

Orienteering race (Hibernia Orange) 38:52 [4] ** 3.31 mi (11:45 / mi) +325ft 10:45 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

Watch stopped, probably when I fell (again) on my left shoulder and arm (again) ... at the downhill to the same control! Oooch. Gonna be sore.

Big fat paved road mistake on the long from 4 to 5. Poor mapping + tired and not paying attention (I was focused on a song I was singing! :)) == at least a couple of minutes of clueless road running before realizing my mistake. Oops!

ahr:141 max:188 shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

hughmac3 took the gals for a walk, so I had a chance to get an earlier-than-usual run in. Thanks, h3!

Some easy trail in anticipation of some O at Hibernia tomorrow. Haven't been out Oing in way too long.

Lovely, lovely day. Spring. Hooray!

Running (3 x Bartram's Laps) 1:13:09 intensity: (1:04:56 @1) + (8:13 @2) 7.57 mi (9:40 / mi) +370ft 9:14 / mi
ahr:133 max:145 weight:153.8lbs shoes: Adidas adiZero Hagio 2

153.8#!! Oops. Hot day, definitely dehydrated from 3 days in a row of warm, then running on mostly the street in the hot hot sun. :)

Cemetery was closed, so kept going all the way to Bartram's Garden, where I used to take Blitz for walks, go running, go skiing, go fishing, etc. ... as the closest park to our old house in West Philly. Haven't been there in ages! Many changes, good -n- bad. Good to see their still solvent.

Fun to get over there even thought it's a bit of a hike from Penn. Heat and 3 days in a row kept me nice and slow.

ahr:134 max:166 weight:155.8lbs shoes: Adidas adiZero Hagio 2

Positively warm out there today! Felt good to sweat, with no icy wrists. Decided to test the calf on a few slow step sets. Stiff, lactic acid burn even at a very slow pace, but altogether pretty satisfying.

Extra 1/2-mile of warm down, just in case.

8 x Franklin Field Steps

ahr:138 max:158 weight:156lbs shoes: Adidas adiZero Hagio 2

Wow, spring has sprung! Coulda stayed out there all day ... calf very close to a non-issue.

shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

Good to get back on the trail for a few miles. Nice day, too many dogs out. Got cold when the sun went in, and calf said 'that's enough'.

Saturday Mar 5, 2016 #

10 AM

Running (20 x Grass Laps) 1:42:41 [3] 10.28 mi (10:00 / mi) +18ft 9:59 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

Calf is good enough to run on without making it worse, I think, so did a few laps at the field. Cool but sunny, not bad.

Juliet's got the tummy thing, and I think I'm flirting with it ... bit of fever last night, and feel a bit crummy today. Hope I don't the the full-blown thing, as it's pretty terrible.

Running (3 x Cemetery Laps) 40:38 [1] 3.75 mi (10:50 / mi) +165ft 10:24 / mi
shoes: Adidas adiZero Hagio 2

Not quite ready for prime time. Tried running with compression sleeves on my calves (thanks, hughmac3), but it remains twingy. Don't think I did any damage, and the sleeve feels good when not running. Hope I didn't set myself back ... again.
