shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

DVOA Warwick SP (5.23mi/327m real)

Beautiful but cold, a good time. No major mistakes, something like 2 min of waffling, mostly down by the creek, but a runner's course so I'll be on the slow side. Forgot to start my watch till a bit into it. Nice courses, and the laserprinted maps (a good test by Mary) look good! More analysis soon.

Note

Well, I think my eyes will be alright. Crazy how hughmac3 and I were just talking about glasses last weekend on the way home in the car. I'm going to order some tomorrow.

Turns out I didn't do as poorly as I'd thought, even with something like 10 minutes of mistakes (~4 on #1!!). Should have been under 11min/k, but I'm just glad I'm not wearing an eye patch right now. ;)

The course was really hard physically. There's way too much rock for 11 to 15 to be done safely at any speed. Even walking was dangerous! #20 was where I poked both eyes (right one pretty badly) ... too dense to be in there.

I hope no one got hurt (particularly in the rocks), I was gone pretty early.

Otherwise pretty fun. I liked the re-use of several controls, and most of the terrain in the southern half was challenging and interesting. The veg and trails definitely need a redo, particularly the trails. That's what got me on #1. Detailed breakdown tomorrow.

Running warm up/down 4:53 [1] 0.37 mi (13:14 / mi) +56ft 11:34 / mi

shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Mount Penn - Antietam Blue (real: 8.61mi/471m)

Wow, that was hard. I was sloppy. Course was rocky. Sticks in both eyes (#20). Ankles worked over (#15). Analysis when RouteGadget's up!

Running warm up/down 5:10 [1] 0.53 mi (9:44 / mi) +3ft 9:40 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Orienteering race 1:26:32 [4] ** 11.52 km (7:31 / km) +302ft 7:13 / km
spiked:11/20c shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Colliers Mills DVOA Local: 8.26mi/79m(!) actual

Only spiked 11 of 20, which is sad for this map. 11:10 in errors! Wow. Wouldn't have moved me up any places, but would have got me to the back of the fast guys, instead of the head of the medium guys. :)

Terrible from 2 > 6, just all over the place, dropped compass, shoes untied, no sense of distance (1:15k a bit), etc. A real runners' course, which I ain't. But fun to get out, and I like that style of navigation and terrain.

1 - fine, although the control was too high in the reentrant (RG) making #2 weird
2 - 0:10, fine, even though outgoing from #1 was weird ... but messed with my mind for the next few controls
3 - 2:00, just not paying attention I guess, should have headed up and over the hill first (mind still messed)
4 - fine
5 - 3:00, unbelievable. Off just a bit right, didn't glance over my shoulder, thought I was off left, headed back in to distance from trail, but the wrong way. Saw lake, so realized what I'd done. Realized shoe was untied, so tied it, rest of the way no incident.
6 - 3:30 ... #5 FELT way worse, but it wasn't. :( Left #5 and realized I'd left my compass where I tied my shoe. FOUND it (somehow), then proceeded to go the wrong way (S) on a deer trail, then the wrong way on the main trail as well! Obviously a minor, uncharted Bermuda Triangle there. Discombobulated. Didn't find the small trail out of the corner of the field, and drifted right (WAY right) instead of left to the handrail water feature like I should have. Saw road, bailed.
7 - fine
8 - fine. Control misprinted a bit too SE, although the clue was correct and I read it so no problems. Others did though.
9 - fine
10 - 0:30 ... BOTH shoes needed retying. Sheesh. This would have been one of my best legs otherwise.
11 - fine, just plain slow. Control misplaced a bit (look at my RouteGadget), but didn't affect till #12
12 - 0:30 ... #11 was off a bit, and I didn't pay proper attention to the hill to the left, and sagged a bit right TOO, so ended up adding some distance.
13 - 0:30, wobbly and slow
14 - 0:30, helped some kids just after punching #13, otherwise would have been a very fast control
15 - good one
16 - 0:30, missed initial S trail and added some distance and hesitated getting to the main trail
17 - good.
18 - fine, felt faster than I was though. :)
19 - fine.
20 - excellent.
F - good.

Fair Hill Little Egypt (actual 5.7mi/149m climb)

Forgot my gaitors, which was a BIG mistake, considering the vegetation. Ouch! Forgot to start my watch till I was a minute or so into the course. We got very lucky with the rain, which held off at least until we left. Very nice day. A few hesitations and maybe a couple of route choice mistakes, but I beat Tom so my life is complete. :)

Good effort as evidenced by my HR! Warmup was good ... more like 10 minutes.

Note

MoboGoGlobo! AWESOME fun, but we ended up mispunching, probably my fault for not being more careful with double-checking control codes. Bah! :) Super cool navigating someone from afar. Hopefully results will be posted soon ... if Pink Socks recovers! :)

Great learning experience. Karl Rouillard was my partner, and my biggest challenge was trying to keep up with him ... I was having a hard time simplifying and then verbalizing quickly. I guess for myself I DON'T think in words when orienteering, so it was difficult to add them into my visually-based ideas.

We got off track one time, but relocated VERY quickly thanks to Karl's stellar locational descriptions, even while running fast! Nicely done Karl, and thanks for being my partner.

MoboGoGlobo! I just signed up, and tuned up my Skype setup with my gaming headset. Nice.

Biking (Commute) 45:25 [2] 9.94 mi (4:34 / mi) +331ft 4:26 / mi

Ride to work. Didn't ride home as I got a late start and the traffic's no fun in the near-dark, and the wind was straight at me. Almost broke the 2 minute/mile speed down the Darby Creek hill -- pretty good on a mid-gear singlespeed.
