Orienteering race (Camp Delmont - Red) 1:18:46 [4] *** 5.77 mi (13:39 / mi) +646ft 12:21 / mi
spiked:4/17c shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265

7.4km/215m - Camp Delmont - DVOA

I was moving pretty fast, but making lots of 1:5k mistakes, very sloppy compass work (if I can even call it that), and a couple of hard falls, including hyper-extending my right knee -- which feels fine today, thank goodness. Just remembered TODAY how I am supposed to use my compass (it's been that long), and had a generally hard and frustrating time through the small trees as well ... I'm sick of Mid-Atlantic woods, bleh. The few bits of open woods were really really nice, thanks for getting us in them Len! I wanted to stay in them longer. :) Interesting large rock features.

Total 1:5k freak out on #1. 2nd biggest cock-up of the day.

I think the map around #5 is distorted. That's the only way I can explain my complete wonk up there. :) Worst control of the day ... a twilight zone moment. It made me angry, and I tore up #6, which I'm proud of. Rare for me to best speedy!

#8 was a bit of a bingo, with the map as old as it is (green accuracy) ... ended up hitting the big knoll to the north of it after some scrambling around.

After #13, right at that oval road, I fell up to my mid-thigh in a grass-covered hole-in-the-ground!! VERY lucky I wasn't moving too fast there. #15 was annoying because it's a 'tower' on the map, and I kept looking up for a tower! :)

Should have had 30 seconds off of 16, but I was sick of bashing through the green at that point. Oh was I bloody! Still (Monday evening) have a bunch of thorns in my legs.

A few (4) good controls, a few (11) good enough controls, a few (3) pretty awful controls. The 'awful' far outweighed the 'good' from a time perspective, so I need to work on my 'cleanliness'.

SNOW on the ground up there! Excellent with the heated 'HQ' (with bathrooms!). Excellent organization and direction, and good job on the courses Len! The printing is awesome, too. Was that through Partners Press? The only thing I would have tried to do would have been to have the (obligatory) loops going in opposite directions or something ... but it's fun to know where you are sometimes, too. ;)

Mediocre effort, lots of bobbles.

Running warm up/down (Z1 Trail) 32:14 intensity: (23:55 @1) + (5:36 @2) + (2:08 @3) + (35 @4) 3.54 mi (9:06 / mi) +404ft 8:13 / mi
ahr:136 max:160 shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (1st pair)

June's "friends over our house" b-day party just wrapped up, so I thought I would enjoy the cool, breezy silence of Crum Woods. Immediately saw a red tail leap from the High Trail and thread through the trees, awesome. I saw (and forgot to mention) a cooper's or some such yesterday, too! Also met a young 55lb male german shorthaired pointer, and chatted about the breed with the owner. Sometimes I really miss Blitz.

ahr:152 max:181 shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (1st pair)

Took the day off to get my hand looked at (ultrasound), so thought I would also get out on the trail again. It's been too long.

Finger apparently has two tiny bone chips at the knuckle. Wow! We'll see what the 'hand guy' says as next steps ... I imagine nothing, but who knows?

Beautiful, cool, windy fall day.

New route ... the Crum Med/Long. I like it. 5 miles per lap.
