shoes: Salomon X Reveal Black/Gray

The new Salomon X Reveal shoes really shone on the ice and crusty snow today in the woods and around town on this easy hike with 11.5# pack and poles. Incredibly gorgeous out there, sun shining, ~35°F.

Groin / gut was fine during the work, even with a pack belt. But afterwards it's twinging a bit.

Note

Ultrasound, Soft Tissue, Pelvis scheduled for tomorrow. Fingers crossed for me that it's a simple hernia. Or an alien, or tiny twin in a bubble, that can be easily removed.

Running (Groundhog Long) 7:50:08 [1] 41.04 mi (11:27 / mi) +2961ft 10:43 / mi
shoes: Topo MT-3 Orange

I signed up for Icy-8 in October, as a way to get back on the fitness, and began to commit in late November. But quickly developed a groin issue. After months and months of no fitness, then the groin and a calf wonk, I knew I didn't really have what it takes for a solid effort at Icy-8, but I had rented the cabin, and was committed, so went anyway.

I'm glad I did, as it was a good time, even though the race itself was pretty painful. I went out at the 48-mile pace, just to see, and it was quickly evident that I didn't have 10s in me for 8 hours, so downgraded to the 40-mile pace, which was great, till (only) about mile 10, when my groin pain really hit me. I gritted my teeth through the rest of the race, enjoying the moments of camaraderie, nice woods (bald eagles, great blue herons, some coyote scat, pileated woodpecker), perfect weather (40s and sorta sunny), and some tunes. Had a nice last 3 miles chatting with the Groundhog winner, who did 9 of the 4.7 mile loop, to edge me out by a couple of miles.

So it was great motivation to get my appointments in order, and get my gut fixed. Because otherwise it's just no fun.

Note

Icy-8 this weekend, Groundhog Division, Long (8mi loop). No fitness. Going to enjoy the woods, some time away, and a tootle along for however many laps I can muster.

I'm setting the over / at / under == 40mi. Course record for Groundhog Division is 48mi in 2015. 40 would likely land me in the money, but probably not first. 12min/mi ... how hard could it be? :)
