10 AM

Walking/Hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Walk through campus, amphitheater, low trail back, with June (in backpack, 20lbs) and Juliet. Spring is coming! Beautiful.
8 PM

Running (Crum 2 laps) 57:13 [3] 5.81 mi (9:51 / mi) +1050ft 8:25 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

The new headlamp is exactly what the doctor ordered! I did two loops on the trail in full dark at almost full speed except for a few of the more lumpy downhill sections. It's a very, very bright light. I ran with it on 2 out of 4 power (medium?). The 'on the wire' (not on the headlight) on/off and dimmer are great, with the battery pack nestled in my camelbak. The center 'bright spot' is a bit too bright compared to the edges for running (maybe just right for rogaine), I wish it was a more even (or focusable) light. I think I can buy a cheap flip-cap type 'diffuser' though -- might be worth an investigation. That said, for rogaine and the odd night-o the light should be superb. Pretty comfortable too, although we'll see how it feels after hours on my noggin.

Note

Wow, my light is 'out for delivery'! Pretty fast for free shipping from NYC!

Note

Want to go out for a little night hike/jog, but it's pretty crappy out there. So, a new headlamp on the way in anticipation of Batona and August rogaine:

I figured I should splurge a little ... it would be very easy to spend a LOT on a 200+ lumen lamp, so $99 is a-okay for one I can swim with. :) I think the batteries that are included in the 'bundle' are crap (from the reviews), but it's a charger anyway. More batteries soon too. Deciding between rechargables and plain ol' alkaline or lithium.
8 PM

Running 35:32 intensity: (6 @0) + (12:11 @1) + (21:57 @2) + (1:17 @3) + (1 @4) 3.93 mi (9:02 / mi) +230ft 8:34 / mi
ahr:140 max:159 shoes: Adidas adiZero Mana 5

Decided to go out anyway, since it stopped raining. One quick (well, relaxed and slow actually) lap around town just to do something. Interesting ... shows 4mi from here (instead of starting at the top of the hill). Better get the bike out and measure all these courses!

Running tempo (Trail) 1:10:54 intensity: (2 @0) + (25 @1) + (1:38 @2) + (23:31 @3) + (45:18 @4) 8.07 mi (8:47 / mi) +1322ft 7:36 / mi
ahr:160 max:173 shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Even less ice today, pretty much a non-factor. But that, the mud, and couple of downed trees make a difference for sure. Thanks for going first today hughmac3! As I mentioned, I was in the mood to be the hound. Almost hit 70 minutes, which would have been particularly cool. Ah well. Two days in a row of this took their toll. Especially on the tips of a couple of my right toes. Amazing what a few grains of sand/dirt will do!

Batona Trail Update: Tom_O and I are on for a North to South Batona Trail hike/rogaine team shakedown event.

We'll be leaving Ong's Hat at 12 noon on Saturday April 2nd to simulate a rogaine start, and hike the 50 miles South into the evening, and through the night, planning to finish before sunup.

Since the cabins at Byrne are closed indefinitely, we'll lean-to or tent camp at Bass River at the terminus. Maybe. Or maybe just hop in the car and head back up to Byrne for the DVOA event! Mmm-hmm. ;)

Our biggest worries are chiggers and ankle stamina.
8 AM

Running long (Trail) 1:20:49 intensity: (17:30 @1) + (44:29 @2) + (15:03 @3) + (3:47 @4) 8.07 mi (10:01 / mi) +1325ft 8:40 / mi
ahr:144 max:166 shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Colder, but still nice. Windy windy windy, scary windy! STILL some bad ice patches in the woods, but worth getting down there again.

Friday Feb 18, 2011 #

Note

It's interesting, the very slight downhill on the way TO work (and probably the less traffic) definitely made a difference on the way in.
7 AM

Biking (Commute) 45:58 [2] 10.69 mi (4:18 / mi) +407ft 4:09 / mi

First time to work from Swat on the bike ... VERY humid morning, so felt hot, even though it was only ~50F. Not much traffic in the morning made it fairly pleasant. Made a few wrong turns, but other than that, uneventful. The road is pretty mediocre, I'll have to keep riding the singlespeed to keep from futzing up the race bike. I'll have to dig out my spare tube, pump, and tire tool too, as I'm sure I'll be getting some flats.

Other than that worthwhile for sure! Weather good = bike to work!
12 PM

Walking/Hiking 40:00 [1] 2.5 mi (16:00 / mi)

Walked to the old house and back to the office -- prepping the house for the Mortgage Inspector. NICE warm day ... very humid though.

Biked to work too ... I'll be jacking my numbers bigtime once I get home this evening! :)
5 PM

Biking (Commute) 44:41 [2] 10.18 mi (4:23 / mi) +449ft 4:13 / mi

More traffic on the way home ... I'll try to leave on time at 4pm to beat some, but it's definitely not as nice as heading in. Roads mediocre and still a bit wet from snow runoff, and not the best biking route, but it'll do!

Tuesday Feb 15, 2011 #

7 AM

Running 41:57 intensity: (3:46 @0) + (20:09 @1) + (17:21 @2) + (34 @3) + (7 @4) 4.06 mi (10:20 / mi) +515ft 9:13 / mi
ahr:134 max:161 shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Ridiculous to try the woods at all ... incredibly treacherous still. Sheet ice everywhere. I went through the woods for a bit, but don't like to do too much of that in Crum Woods. Hit the track for a few laps, and IT was still snowed in too! Gave up. :)

Good to get out though.

Our sun room is ROASTING in the sun. We really don't need to heat the house on a sunny day, it's awesome. In the winter. I'm thinking curtains or louvers in the summer. We'll see!

Running 44:09 intensity: (2:51 @1) + (28:26 @2) + (10:38 @3) + (2:14 @4) 5.28 mi (8:22 / mi) +295ft 7:56 / mi
ahr:147 max:171 weight:164.5lbs shoes: Adidas adiZero Mana 5

Finally remembered to take our zoo card on my run, so did a couple of laps. Neat! Some kind of antelope was racing me (really!), and the mountain lion was watching me really intently. Nice and quiet, not many people there.

Running long 1:02:40 [3] 6.76 mi (9:16 / mi) +571ft 8:35 / mi

Road run over to Rose Valley. Nice to get out.

We moved into our new house yesterday! Yay!

Running hills (Hills+ Foothills Level 8) 40:00 intensity: (2:00 @1) + (22:04 @2) + (10:17 @3) + (5:39 @4) 4.5 mi (8:53 / mi) +597ft 7:54 / mi
ahr:149 max:165 weight:165.6lbs shoes: Adidas adiZero Mana 5

Too cold for the street, but hit the gym for the first time in a while. Working on adjusting the speed to keep a constant HR ~147 ... till the last mile of course. ;)

Note

As I mentioned in hughmac3's log, the temperature was probably to my advantage going out a bit earlier I think ... firmer crust. According to my "2010 US 15km Trail Champs" handicapping system, you still beat me by 3:24, quite significant. I would like to use a 15km world record for this (I would think the spread from M40 to M70 would be slightly less there), but I couldn't find the data. Anyone?

Well done hughmac3!

TODAY's MULTIPLIER: 1.458

Note

HR NOTE: a little SALT water got the HR monitor working immediately this morning. Perfect!
9 AM

Running (Crum 2 laps) 54:11 intensity: (1:06 @1) + (1:50 @2) + (6:02 @3) + (41:53 @4) + (3:20 @5) 5.81 mi (9:20 / mi) +892ft 8:09 / mi
ahr:162 max:180 weight:165.5lbs shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

After yesterday's rain and last night's freeze, lotsa black ice on the street, and the woods were more icy. But more solid, too, so it was a double-edged sword. Running just off the edge of the track was best ... not to much slog, or too much slip.

Going to upgrade my HR zones based on new data (from ONA, nice!). Forgot to do it today before the run though ... was shooting for 167avg (new 85%), but the conditions (particularly on the downhill) precluded that amount of push, a nd I was a bit beat up from yesterday.

Running (Trail) 1:25:36 intensity: (46 @1) + (7:26 @2) + (1:02:29 @3) + (14:03 @4) + (52 @5) 7.99 mi (10:43 / mi) +1263ft 9:19 / mi
ahr:153 max:176 shoes: Inov-8 Mudroc 290

Cold cold rain. Ice with bad snow on top. Terrible conditions, but had to get out. Can barely type this, my wrists are frozen. :)
