Tiomila. 9th leg for SNO 1st team. Out in 4th, back in 4th. Team 4th overall.
I was quite nervous but I have been working on big occasions so I think I felt more at home than normal. Got some good pieces of advice from the experience team members as well.
Relaxed at the start and got a good look at the whole course on the run out, decided that controls 2,3,4 would be the hardest (as in if I got lost the hardest to relocate), set up a good plan and found them all.
On the long leg north my mind started to drift and I didn't quite refocus. I drifted mid leg but got back on line, I should have realised here that I wasnt quite on it. The most irritating thing about this mistake is I know EXACTLY where I was and what I did wrong, and I also knew at the time what I was doing was risky. I was looking for the small cliff except I read it as facing down the slope and not towards me, when I did not find this instead of setting my compass and going I instead looked up to try and see the shapes, this ended up with me running offline to the right. When I initially relocated I did not check my compass properly so I did not realise I was on the edge of the slope (I realised this after running back a bit). On the way into the control I passed a Gothenburg runner who I thought looked like Francois Gonon (the guy I was chasing) (It was indeed him) and I then saw a Halden runner. I guessed that maybe I had somehow caught them so tried to up my speed to the next control, when I eventually passed the Halden runner I checked his number and saw he was an 8th leg runner, this made me think that the IFK runner was also an 8th leg and I went back to just focussing on my own run.
There was one routechoice I think I did badly, crossing the field I went up the field a bit and then into the forest rather than sticking on the track (10th control), not so much time loss, but maybe a bit. The other routechoice decision was the 11th where I could have gone along the road. In the end I decided I was actually safer attacking from the forest and that the runnability should be good, I think I was right... I also ran very fast at the end

The team was happy with 4th and I was quite pleased with my contribution (i.e. not ruining the work of the previous 8 runners). Of course I am asking "what if" but then there are a lot of teams and runners in this position so I just need to try and learn from this. When I focus properly I can be good, I just need to do this for a whole race.
