Orienteering 1:40:00 [3]
Sprint at West Point Campus: 18:56. 2.56 km w/ 105 Cm = 7:24 / km
Fun race but I was very confused in the beginning. After C1 I hit a dirt trail, the continuation of the iniitial paved trail, and excepted to see black dashes on the map. It didn't sink in that on a sprint map a heavily used trail could be tan with black dashes and I didn't fathom that it was the continuation of the paved trail. I had a lot of pauses, hesitations and misdirections. Anyway, I finally settled down from C6 to C7, caught back up to Greg B. who had passed me earlier, and snuck ahead on the climb to C11. After that, in the campus portion I was moving decently enough. I don't know if my routes were always optimal but they were at least Ok and I didn't lose any significant time.
Middle distance at West Point: 49:23. 4.92 km w/ 175 Cm = 10:02/km
Contoured to C1. I'm pretty sure that staying low on the flatter slope was faster. But I got there without error. However, I bungled the final approach to C2 and got lost in the green -- we'll see how much it cost me, 5 min? After that my nav. was pretty clean albiet slow. Sloppy on the slope to C12 but otherwise I was visualizing the map and in control. It was fun to run across snow.
The most beat up I've been in a long time. I slipped on a rock during my wanderings in the first part of the sprint and got scraped up. During the middle I fell on the way down a rocky slope, got banged up, and hurt my left hand and a couple of fingers.
