Orienteering 2:20:00 [3]

First of all, a pox, lyme disease and a 1000 parallel errors to whomever took my map. It had my number and name in big block letters on the back -- no way was this was not noticeable. Maybe it fell or got misplaced during transport. But otherwise, the culprit should consider themselves cursed.

I was doing somewhat ok until C16. Not great, but ok. I made it to 200m from the control and again, it seems like I made a 90deg error. Bizarre, bizarre.

Overall for the weekend I had some sequences of controls where I was doing well. But my lack of technique training and racing was apparent. I couldn't keep it together for an entire race and the terrain and vegetation punished mental lapses. In Chicago there were enough trails to regain lost composure -- not here. Physically, I had what it took. Technically, I was inadequately prepared. Early fall races are a challenge because it is still too hot in TX to spend a lot of time in the terrain. But there are things I can do to compensate that I didn't or didn't have the opportunity to do. I'm quite disappointed.

Orienteering 2:40:00 [3]

Got a good nights sleep and I was physically solid -- no complaints there. The greenbriar was obviously a bit of a drag but it didn't affect my mood and attitude during the race -- I just kept at it. My compass work in low visibility was poor; it almost seems like I was making 90deg errors. C7 (off the map) and C13 are particularly perplexing as I was, I believe, just outside the control circle before totally loosing it. I did have a number of controls when I felt really confident, in contact, and in control of what I was doing. In the end I wasn't the only one who had some difficulties and so I am glad that I kept working hard to the end and didn't give up. I am in total awe of Mike's and Will's run -- I can't imagine running that fast, much less navigating, in that vegetation.

Event: US Champs

Orienteering 45:00 [3]

Easy around the classic model and sprint model.

Orienteering 20:00 [3]

Physically not 100%. I had to get up at 3:50am yesterday to catch my flight to DC and I was still dragging this morning. Didn't feel very comfortable on the running legs. Still, I would have had a decent race except for blowing C6. I hit the spur to the right of the control but thought is was even farther right. Eventually had to come back to the trail and properly attack from the hill top.

Run 30:00 [3]

Around the hood with a map visualizing optimal route choices and excellent attackpoints, while saying little prayers for my legs to recover.
