orienteering 48:45 [3]

Nice brown course at West Point. Drove up this morning and didn't look at the event notes before starting (although I did read them earlier in the week). I totally missed the information about the wide, deep stream so was quite confused when I got to what I expected to be a stream only to find it 15 feet wide and deep enough that it would be up to my waist. I lost some time making sure I was where I thought I was and finally decided I was and then started looking for a place to cross and eventually found the bridge that had been put down. Other than that I thought I was reasonably clean. Didn't jog except in a very few places, partly because my hip hurt a bit, partly because the terrain is just a bit too rocky, but mostly because I'm pretty out of shape.

The walk back was brutal and my knee and hip were starting to get really stiff by the time I got to my car.

orienteering 22:43 [3]

Sprint course. Stiffened up quite a bit but then felt a bit better after sitting for a while and decided to go ahead and do the sprint. A nice course again. I couldn't jog the first three controls which were basically down a road. Every time I tried it was very uncomfortable. Then we had a few controls in the woods and I started loosening up and I was able to jog a bit in the section through the buildings. Then a couple in the woods and a jog back down some trails to the finish. Was surprised that I was able to move as well as I did at the end. I guess I need to warm up before a sprint but I'm so out of shape I feel like it just tires me out.

Pretty beat now and my knee is sore but a good night's sleep should sort out most of that.

trail 54:30 [3]

Meadow loop with Sandy.
My Garmin doesn't want to talk to my laptop again. Bleh.

Note

Oh yeah - did pt exercises last Thursday, Friday, Sunday and then today. And did them plus new stuff at the pt appointment yesterday.
5 PM

trail 36:41 [3] 2.19 mi (16:45 / mi) +86m 14:56 / mi

Yay! Did some jogging without much discomfort. Hiked down to the drive, jogged a half mile on the drive, then did 100 paces walk, 100 paces jog up the trail back to the road and walked it in figuring why push my luck.

Will see my PT tomorrow, then only once next week and then skip a week and see how things go. With the semester ending in two weeks, I should be able to be fairly good about doing all the exercises and getting back into some semblance of shape.

orienteering race 1:24:38 [3]

This was one of those disasters that I've had a couple times, where I'm doing well, pushing the pace a bit so I'm a little tired, get to where I think the control should be and don't see it. And then I hunt a bit, relocate and end up right back in the same place, but I know it's not there, so I relocate a different way and end up right back in the same place, and finally relocate completely carefully at a walk and know I am in the absolute right place and end up in the exact same place again and don't know what to do. This time I decide the control must be missing and so continue walking towards my next control only to see the flag hidden away. This has happened to me before on several occasions so you would think I'd know enough to look a little harder for the control if I think I'm in the right spot. But it's really hard to do that when you're pushing just a bit harder than your fitness might warrant. Anyway, about 10 minutes lost there plus probably another minute or so on the next leg when I had lost all motivation to push so walked most of the trail to the go control and finish.

The good news though is that I was able to push the pace. Before the race, my hip was hurting a bit, but once I started I never noticed it and jogged in a few places and it was fine, so jogged a good bit of our long trail leg. Very happy that I was able to do that.
