hiking 31:25 [3] 1.62 mi (19:21 / mi) +93m 16:25 / mi

Decided to stop being a wimp. My hip is not 100% but like my knees, perhaps it never will be so I decided to get out and do something. Something consisted of hiking down to the drive, jogging from one trail to another and then hiking back up.

Preceded by a couple of hours of yardwork and followed by some yoga.

other 20:00 [3]

Hip still bothering me so a little reluctant to get too far from home. Going up and down stairs doesn't seem to be a problem so did stair repeats. Started easy with 5 minutes of double stairs in the middle.

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

Situps plus a bunch of yoga.

Note

I'm mostly recovered from the rogaine - things that were sore during the event like my feet and legs and various bruised places from tripping over deadfall and juniper are all fine. My knee got sore during the rogaine, but regularly doses of ibuprofen kept it under control for the most part and it's back to normal now. But, I have a funny twingey thing in my hip that didn't bother me during the event but has since Monday night. It's gotten much better but I think I need to give it another couple of days before trying to do more than just normal moving around.

In thinking about the rogaine, my first thought is always that I am very glad that I did it and I am very glad that Peter was my teammate. My pace counting is usually very reliable, but for whatever reason I was having all sorts of problems with it during the race so happy to let Peter take on just about all of the navigating, especially since he is so good at it. I made unhelpful suggestions several times pulling us in the wrong direction (#73 and #84 spring to mind) but also helpful suggestions a few times (oh, look, here's an elephant track that seems to go where we want to go, that flat spot could be the spur/knoll we're looking for, etc.) but mostly I spent my energy on trying to not fall too far behind so that he wouldn't have to stop and wait for me. I always had a general idea of where we were and what the plan was, but was quite content to follow along and watch a master at work.

I'm not sure why things went bad for me as quickly as they did. None of the food I brought with me that I've eaten on many a rogaine was appealing so eating was a chore. After a few hours, every sip of water seemed to unsettle my stomach and made me want to throw up but I didn't want to get dehydrated so tried to keep drinking at least a little. Anything more than a gentle climb had my heart pounding in my ears. All just completely unusual symptoms. Altitude, lack of conditioning, old age... not sure what the culprit is, probably some mixture.

There are a lot of complaints about the map but it didn't really affect us too much. I think we were "lucky" although many times we made our own luck. The highest density of points was in the north section so we never tackled the southern sections that people seem to be complaining about the most in terms of the map. We stumbled on unmapped roads/cow paths often enough early on that we started assuming they would be where we wanted them and go where we wanted them to go and they usually were and did. After a while we were hitting controls that lots of people had been to and used their tracks. But, we also got stuck in our share of junky deadfall and juniper so I guess it evens out. I question the placement of several controls that seemed a little too vague in the terrain, since there were nearby features that seemingly would have been just as good. I'm not sure what the reason for using them was.

It's really sad that the results got so screwed up. In talking to Valerie about it, there does not seem to be an obvious reason that anyone has yet figured out, so recovering the data is going to be problematic. I do hope that it eventually gets sorted out - it would really be a shame if there are never meaningful results. I'm quite satisfied with what we did - more than satisfied actually, really very happy about it - so don't particularly care about where we placed, but I think some other teams do care. And, I was also looking forward to checking out what controls some of the teams chose to go to.
