orienteering race 1:36:54 [4] 6.8 km (14:15 / km) +220m 12:16 / km

Red course at French Creek. Very, very hot and humid. Very buggy as I worked epunch most of the day as well - two bee stings, two deer fly bites and a swollen ear from some sort of biting nuisance.

At the start I noticed I didn't have my watch on but since it was epunching I decided not to bother going back to my car to get it. Then about half way to the first control I realized I also didn't have my compass and decided what the heck, I'd do the course without it. It was pretty challenging but a lot of fun. It cost me probably 10 minutes or so, just in going slow to make sure I could keep track of where I was and in taking a few roundabout routes that had more obvious features. I did quite a bit of running on a contour which is not something I consciously think about doing very often. I may end up running on a contour but don't often use that as a navigational tool. And given the heat and humidity, today was probably a reasonable day to take it a bit easy.

trail 1:15:00 [3]

hike down, fast walk for 2 miles along the drive (~26:30), jog back for 2 miles (~19:00), hike home. I had originally intended to walk for only about half an hour, so didn't change out of my cutoffs and cotton top. But once I got down there I kept deciding to do a little more - I was absolutely drenched with sweat by the time I finished.

trail 42:28 [3]

Short hill loop - mostly walked, intentionally. Just too damn hot out and achy knees don't help. On the other hand, not much slower than when I run most of it....

trail 35:17 [3]

Same loop as two Fridays ago; enjoyed it today as well.

running 1:03:00 [3]

took one of the longer ways down to the drive, 3 miles of jogging at about 10:40 pace, returned home the same longer way. Knees felt crummy - hopefully from all the sitting yesterday on the plane and today at jury duty. But I went ahead and made myself do the three miles and felt a bit better by the end. Not too bad for 51 (my birthday today).
