hiking 56:00 [3]

Around the meadow loop with Sandy.

My Garmin has decided to stop working. Nothing. Nada. Can not get it to do anything. Weird.

Note

Randomly picked it up and started pushing buttons two at a time thinking perhaps there was a reset function and presto! It is now working again. I suppose most people know this and/or it's documented somewhere but it was a nice surprise to just stumble on it.

strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

Did a Kelly type workout in my basement after a couple hours of weeding and hacking back the flower beds.

My ankle is pretty much back to normal and my knee is back to where it was a few months ago. So am feeling optimistic about hiking this week but don't think I'm ready to try any jogging yet.

strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

Session with Kelly.

Good thing I didn't join the pull-up competition. Could barely finish the third set of mini fake pull-ups - just pulling my chest up to the bar with my body at about 45 degrees and my feet on the floor.

Ankle still a bit swollen but definitely improving. Probably stay off it another day or two.

Session with Kelly. Upped the weights on a few things.

hiking 15:00 [3]

And then tried to hike with Sandy only to roll my ankle about 8 minutes in. Icing now. it doesn't seem to be a really bad one but won't know until tomorrow. This falling business has got to stop!!

hiking 1:19:07 [3] 3.43 mi (23:04 / mi) +99m 21:11 / mi

Went down to the drive instead of the regular meadow loop - not sure why, but it's what I felt like doing so that's what I did. Stopped and picked a whole bunch of blackberries. Will try to remember to take a container and go again later this week. The other dip in the graph is where a large tree is down across the drive and climbing over it wasn't trivial. But I saw a crew in a little cart with tools just past it so I'm guessing it will be cleared soon. Another tree was down a little before it but that must have happened two nights ago since that one already had a path cut through it. The Friends of the Wissahickon are really amazing about cleaning up the trails after storms.

strength & stretching 40:00 [3]

Intended to do this yesterday. It's been a bit of a struggle to get back on top of things since I fell but getting there.

Control checking for Sept. race. Everything all finalized and all streamered except now it turns out that what they said they wanted maybe isn't really what they wanted and I'm not sure whether I have the energy or desire to start over.

strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

Workout with Kelly. We focused on core and arms as my knee is still a little sore when I bend it with weight on it.
5 PM

hiking 57:24 [3] 2.87 mi (20:00 / mi) +85m 18:18 / mi

Meadow loop with Sandy. Took a hiking pole in case it got to be too much for my knee but it was fine so at least slow hiking is now okay.

Note

Was feeling all cocky about the great week of exercise I had and how good I felt so of course I was destined to injure myself. I was a little achy Sat night to the point I was having trouble falling asleep so decided to get up and take some ibuprofen. Slipped on a step on the way downstairs and landed with my knee bent all the way. After whimpering in a fetal position for a while managed to get up, take the pills and crawl back to bed, now needing them more than ever. This was a bad one and my knee is all swollen and sore. But it's better today than yesterday and better now than this morning so I assume it will settle down after another a day or two of icing and more ibuprofen. Phooey!

Control site checking for an upcoming event.

Boy am I out of shape! I felt fine during this outing but am really stiff and sore this evening!

hiking 54:03 [3] 2.86 mi (18:54 / mi) +84m 17:19 / mi

Meadow loop with Sandy trying to avoid the worst of the storms. Somewhat pleasant out although still humid.

strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

Session with Kelly. Really noticed the imbalance in my glutes doing reverse lunges holding on to the bar - getting through all four sets of 15 on the right leg was tough, the left leg was not easy but not nearly as bad as the right.

A shame I took so long to realize I needed to do this kind of strengthening work. My knee really feels so much better.

Hanging controls for the Wed. evening series event at Fort Washington. Greg Ahlswede volunteered to set the courses and they were well received. It was ridiculously humid out so drenched by the time I finished. A brief respite and then things were fast and furious as we had a decent turnout. Got lots of help but it still felt chaotic at times. Controls picked up by 8pm but another 20 minutes to get the car loaded and pickup all the signs.

These were a lot of work but I enjoyed doing it. A lot of requests to do it again next year. I'm willing to do a couple, but hope some other people join in and do some of them.

I am also tired of having an epunch/event kit sitting in my living room.

hiking 1:16:01 [3] 3.06 mi (24:50 / mi) +95m 22:39 / mi

Meadow loop, stopping to pick lots of berries which made a good dessert this evening and I still have more. Yum. Should probably deduct 20 minutes or more but I also did two hours of yard work earlier in the day so I'll call it a wash.

strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

Session with Kelly. It was hard. She did not take it easy on me and it was a struggle to finish all the reps in all the sets.
5 PM

hiking 13:12 [3] 0.72 mi (18:21 / mi)

trail 27:36 [3] 1.7 mi (16:14 / mi) +99m 13:45 / mi

Fail on the watch hitting stop instead of lap when I got to the drive and then hitting lap instead of stop when I got home. Adjusted the time and distance to include the half mile on the drive. I'm guessing at 12 min/mi.

Sunday Jul 9, 2017 #

strength & stretching 1:00:00 [3]

A whole bunch of yard work (about 4 hours worth) trimming all the bushes and hedges that had gotten out of control while I was gone and then cleaning up all the stuff I cut off. Followed by the core dvd (40 minutes). I'll call it an hour but I am beat.

hiking 1:26:22 [3] 4.12 mi (20:58 / mi) +191m 18:20 / mi

A nice hike with some slowing near the end near the raspberry (just about gone) and blackberry (just starting to ripen) bushes.

trail 39:05 [3] 2.32 mi (16:51 / mi) +89m 15:03 / mi

Short loop which included jogging 1/2 mile on the drive and then a few jogs on the trail home. There are races in the fall and I want to be able to move faster than a walk for some of them. I've got a long way to go though - barely made it through the 1/2 mile without stopping.

strength & stretching 20:00 [3]

Followed by some of the things Kelly has me do. I am trying to ease back into this a bit or I will be in trouble with the next real session.

hiking 55:12 [3] 2.87 mi (19:14 / mi) +80m 17:42 / mi

Nice hike around the meadow loop with Sandy just trying to get the kinks out after a long night and day of flying to get home.

I did do a good bit of hiking and even some kayaking and canoeing while in Alaska, but I didn't track any of it. I may go back and log some of it when I sort through my pictures. We'll see.
