hiking 1:15:00 [3]

TNT - Friday version in Media with a guest appearance by Brendan. Karl and Sandy also came. Only willing to hike; knees felt okay.

trail 1:04:00 [3]

TNT - extended indian loop with Sandy and Bob (although he now ends it differently). Felt pretty good so ran a lot of the first 35 minutes, but then my back/hip started to feel sore so walked the rest. Knee blew up with about 15 minutes to go. Something was really out of whack since I could barely move it without pain but it somehow sorted itself out and is okay now. Perhaps I'd better stick to hiking.

Note

I am definitely looking forward to all the free time I will have once NAOC is over.

map hiking 2:00:00 [3]

NAOC related work. Woohoo - actually got to play in woods.

Note

Horrid headache. I think it's dehydration and/or caffeine overload.

hiking 1:10:00 [3]

TNT media with Dasha and Ann. For some reason I couldn't stop talking. Need to start running again - can't talk at all when running.

Sumptious dinner afterwards with Clem and Tom there, too.

hiking 50:00 [3]

TNT - hiking with Dasha. Sandy and Bob ran the extended Indian loop while Greg, Clem and Karl did their own thing. I vented non-stop; poor Dasha. Nice farewell dinner for Greg. Good luck to him in Spain! (Guess on the time - forgot to start my watch.)

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

some yoga, pushups and ab work

orienteering 1:56:01 [3]

Red course at Tyler.

Looking at the splits shows four errors - one at #2 (yup, ran the wrong way on the trail before figuring out where I was), one at #11 (yup, took an unexpected stop at a bathroom - very glad there was one on the way), one at #21 (tried to sneak around to the right but realized that wasn't going to work so backtracked) and then the finish chute where it always shows me as having an error since everyone else runs fast and I go the same speed.

Note

Really, really sore afterwards. Not sure why. Knee was quite unhappy for the last 15 minutes of the race - I was picking up my leg by pulling on my knee brace. While I still feel very sore, my knee doesn't hurt so much now which I suppose is good.

hiking 1:14:33 [3]

TNT - hiked the trails with Sandy and Ann (anniemac). Didn't think it was going to be as humid as it was. Lots of good food afterwards with Karl and Bob there as well.

Note

Meant to go to yoga. Didn't.

walking 35:00 [3]

A final walk on the beach. The water was much nicer today.

Saturday Aug 11, 2012 #

walking 20:00 [3]

In the sand.

walking 32:00 [3]

Early - well not that early but early enough that there were few people sitting on the beach that I had to go around - morning walk in the deep sand. It was already hot by 8am.

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

some yoga stretches, pushups and ab work

walking 33:00 [3]

Another walk on the beach. Could feel it in my lower calves.

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

Some yoga, pushups and ab work.

Note

And an adventure. I went out on the deck (I'm at my sister's beach house for a few days) and the sliding door managed to lock itself behind me. I have no idea how that happened and I have not been able to duplicate it. But it did happen. And all the other downstairs doors (and windows) were locked. And my cell phone was in the house and I don't know my sister's number or anyone's for that matter - they're just all stored in the phone. There is a code to the garage and a spare key in the garage, but they recently changed the code and I hadn't memorized the new one and I couldn't call anyone to get the code because I didn't know anyone's number.

I knew the upstairs balcony had a door that was unlocked so I went next door and borrowed a step ladder from the neighbors. It wasn't a particularly tall ladder - just a normal size one that open up into an A shape - maybe 8 ft. By standing on the very top I could grab the railings on the balcony and get my foot up on the edge - maybe chest high or so. Glad I've been doing yoga and pushups - I was able to pull myself up and stand up and flop over the railing. Whew.

walking 30:00 [3]

On the beach; bare feet. Good calf and ankle workout!

Somehow, getting all hot and sweaty on the beach doesn't seem nearly as bad as at home. And a big bonus is no bugs!

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

Some yoga to stretch out a bit and some pushups and ab work.

orienteering 2:04:00 [3] 6.8 km (18:14 / km)

DVOA event at FCE. Got to the start intending to do Green but they were out of Green maps and drawing them so I decided to do Red. Aimed for 2 hours and started off at a trot. After about 200 meters in the heat and humidity decided walking was just fine.

So hiked around the course. It was an interesting course and I had fun. Unfortunately, the vegetation has changed considerably and there is now tons of blackberry and other things with prickers; stilt grass and ferns hiding logs, rocks and holes; and some other things that make you think you should be in a swamp by the look of it and grows over my head. That together with the recent fire damage and normal rocky craziness at FC made for some tough going.

But, I just kept plodding along and had a great time. Got a little off course on a couple of controls trying to avoid pushing through really thick stuff and had to stop and think about it and then correct so could have maybe saved 10 minutes total so two hour was totally doable.

A good workout.

hiking 54:00 [3]

Hiked the loop that I've been jogging.

Almost twisted my ankle stepping out the door; went over on it but managed to get my weight off it and onto my other foot fast enough not to do any damage. But made me feel rather frail.
