hiking 40:00 [3]

TNT - my ankle was a little sore so I decided just to hike and not try to run on it.

Nice crowd for dinner. Excellent food.

Note

I am really not fond of people who think that they are somehow special and shouldn't have to follow the rules that everyone else does and then complain when facing the consequences.

map hiking 4:00:00 [3]

Streamering at Hickory Run. Middle distance courses pretty much done and almost finished with the streamering and adding control codes. Will still have to make one more pass to put the stakes in the ground exactly where I want the control - maybe during the training weekend. It was also a good test of how long the loop will take when we go to hang and vet for the actual event.

Was planning to do a short loop after this on a different section, but I got back to my car and it started to pour. Timed it pretty well actually - got the drop in temperature and a breeze and just a little rain to cool off and then once I was in my car it opened up.

Waited about 40 minutes to see if it would stop, but eventually decided to just head home and come up another time. I needed to be writing control descriptions and so doing it in the rain wasn't a good option.

Note

My compass that I use for course setting fell apart. :(

It still "works", it's just in pieces.

trail 35:27 [3]

Short hill loop. Hot and humid but not sunny so bearable. Did walk from the cross-walk though but ran the rest.

trail 55:05 [3]

TNT - extended Indian loop with Sandy; she pulled me along and kept me moving. It was tough out there tonight. Greg and Jose showed up when we finished - they had been off running on their own.

walking 1:00:00 [3]

The idea of this outing with Sandy was to jog/run to the gelatto store, get some and walk back while eating it. And it was inspired by Mary's 1/1/1 idea. The whole distance is about 2.5 miles one way so the idea was to jog down to the drive (.75 mi), run .5 hard, walk/jog the next .5, run the next .5 hard and then walk the rest of the way to the store. Mission accomplished.

running 9:50 [3]

The two half miles hard. Was hoping for a little faster time. But at least it gives me something to work on.

And eventually will work on doing the mile all as one.

Note

Ankle seems okay to run on even though a little puffy still. The little tiny puncture on my knee is healing nicely but still ridiculously sore.

Note

Toes, inner thigh, calf - all cramping while I was watching the replay of TDF.

Note

Several hours of yard work pulling out all the things that died during the last few weeks in the intense heat. Most - all? - will grow back either again this summer or next year so not a big deal but my mulch pile is getting a tad ridiculous.

Note

Lilies

Got home Wednesday to find the rains had broken many of my lilies so I cut a bunch and brought them inside. The fragrance is almost overpowering first thing in the morning.

Note

Injury check:
Bad knee - about the same as always.
Good knee - bad bruise from the fall. I wondered how I had gotten it dirty this morning until I realized it wasn't dirt. The gash is small but deep but seems to be healing.
Ankle - mildly swollen, mildly discolored. Won't run on it for another few days but it seems okay for walking. Keeping it wrapped and icing periodically.

hiking 2:00:00 [3]

Putting out and picking up the controls from the TeamConcepts program at Gifford Pinchot. Everyone seemed to enjoy the orienteering despite the weather - it was either raining or so humid it might as well have been raining.

Also had to run and check one control - a tree branch fell on it and cracked the cross-piece of the stand but it was still usable.

Someone moved three of the controls off the side of the trail and into the woods. Seems like a very odd thing to have done. Nothing vandalized, just moved a few feet and sort of hidden as opposed to being out in the open.

trail 30:00 [3]

Checking the trail network and map in general at Gifford Pinchot for use at a corporate program on Wednesday. Was jogging along nicely occasionally stopping to check something or make notes but having a good time and then managed to fall hard rolling my ankle and getting a good puncture in my knee after about 45 minutes. &*%%$!! Finished up checking at a walk and I could tell this was not going to be good.

Knee is now very sore and bending it is painful. Ankle is slightly swollen as well. I imagine I'll have some nice bruising in the morning. :(

hiking 4:30:00 [3]

Hiking in Green Ridge State Forest with Valerie. Picked what looked like a reasonable route from the map and were surprised with a lovely section that had me scared silly and wishing I had never agreed to a hike. The trail was about 6 inches wide on an almost vertical hillside and I would have turned around and gone back but that seemed scarier than going forward. After making it through that section we went cross-country and found a much nice way back. And then tacked on an out and back that was much nicer to get to 10 miles.

orienteering 1:18:00 [3]

With Valerie at Great Falls. Beautiful woods for the most part but lots of spider webs. Was mostly hiking and not really running all that much. Then decided to quit about half way through (some blister issues) and jogged some trails most of the last 20 minutes to get back to the car.

trail 45:26 [3]

TNT - Sandy was tough and wanted to run. Indian loop with a good bit of walking. But we got out there. Go us.

Note

Unfortunately do not seem to be able to load the Yoga DVD onto the MP3 player. :(

trail 35:14 [3]

Short hill loop before it got hot. Curiously, I felt pretty good, hills didn't seem that bad and I felt like I was pushing as hard as usual, but the time is a bit slower than recent ones. Perhaps because I went on an empty stomach? If it's tiredness from yesterday, I would have expected my legs to feel kinda dead and they didn't. Whatever.

map hiking 3:00:00 [3]

Total time in the woods: 5 hours. I was really slow today. And I only got about half of what I wanted done. But I knew if I kept going my knee was going to start being really painful so I called it a day and will go back another time.

Perhaps it's a good thing I haven't done anything about the CNYO rogaine. I don't seem to be in particularly good shape for it.
