map hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Hanging some controls in the morning plus some control pickup after. It was a long day but lots of fun.

map hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Hanging controls for HR. Bugs were bad - it was okay as long as I was moving but stopping to hang the flags was an invitation for mosquitoes and horseflies to feast.

Was on my feet a lot longer than this but it was all fairly leisurely.

Note

Went over to SCEE and Clem and Ross ran two sprint courses. It was fun. Eric joined us afterwards; dinner courtesy of Ross.

hiking 2:12:00 intensity: (2:00:00 @1) + (12:00 @4)

Hiked over to SCEE to put out the stakes and streamers for the courses on Labor Day weekend since some people are going to use them to train tomorrow. Things were going along fine for about 2 hours and then things started to go downhill. First I dropped my pen somewhere and didn't notice. Not a big deal, I still had markers for writing control codes on the streamer tape but it's hard to write control descriptions with a fat marker. Then, I noticed that one of the paper bags that I had been collecting berries in had broken open on the bottom and all my raspberries were gone. So I put the blackberries in the map bag so the same wouldn't happen to them and started over again on the raspberries. And then finally, I started hearing thunder and seeing lightening. I resigned myself to getting soaked and put in the last few stakes. And while I could hear the thunder and see the lightning, so far no rain. So I decided to see if I could jog home and beat the storm. And I did! :)

And now it's pouring. I'm glad I decided to mow my lawn before heading over to SCEE. Life is good.

Note

Pulled off a couple of ticks while in the bathtub. They're everywhere! Hope I got them all...

strength & stretching (Core DVD) 40:00 [2]

While watching the last hour of the tour live this morning. Can't beat that for distraction.

hiking 50:00 [2]

TNT - a brisk hike with Sandy and Bob. Worked hard; good company.

Got the maps for Hickory Run bagged after dinner. Thanks for the help Sandy!

Note

Showed Sandy my sprint course (she'll still be recovering from foot surgery so no chance she'll be doing it unfortunately). She liked a couple of the route choice legs so hopefully others will find it fun and challenging.

Note

Really enjoyed watching the tour this evening. I may just have to stay home and watch it live tomorrow morning. I like listening to Phil Ligget so much more than the prime time hosts it may be worth having to stay late at school to finish up what needs to get done.

Yoga/Pilates 1:15:00 intensity: (15:00 @0) + (15:00 @1) + (45:00 @3)

Good class. Not sure if it was since I was there, but nothing hard on the knees tonight.

PT 5:00 [1]

Saw a physical therapist this morning and she felt that she could help with several things. So I will be getting a series of exercises to do (just have a couple for this week but will get more added on next week) and we'll see if there's any improvement. It would be nice...

map hiking 2:00:00 [1]

Walked over to the Schuylkill Center and hiked the trails to see what I could do for a September beginner's event I'm setting. There are several major changes to the trail network and fenced in areas so I rerouted my white course. But the new network gives me some much better options for yellow if I can overprint an uncrossable fence and some new trails. And I think I will set a sprint instead of a score.

It's a completely different park in January than July!

Note

Will need to go back with a bag in the next week - the raspberries are everywhere and very ripe and the blackberries were just starting.

trail 36:06 [3]

Short hill loop. Really slow time - worst in a long while. Guess taking a week off is not such a good idea!

Monday Jul 13, 2009 #

Note

So am on medication for an infected tick bite - possibly Lymes but definitely infected. Pulled the tick out about two weeks ago and then discovered the area was very red and the whole groin area a bit swollen and very sore Friday morning. Saw the doctor and was put on antibiotics and cautioned very strongly to get to an ER if the red area got any larger (the doctor circled it with a black marker so it would be very clear) and told not to exercise for a week. The first I can understand, but not the second. But, perhaps a week break isn't such a bad idea anyway so that's the plan.

running 1:07:00 [3]

Well, I only ran for about 27 minutes of this and walked the rest. My plan had been to walk down to the drive and run 4 miles at a comfortable pace. I was hoping 10:30 a mile would be comfortable. I ran into the Urbans though right when I started so walked with them for half a mile until they turned off. I needed to vent and they obliged - see below. Then I started and was going at about 10:30 but after 2 miles I suddenly completely lost all energy. So I eked out a 5:45 half and called it quits on the running and hiked back up the hill home.

I have various ailments - knees not great and have something wrong with the ball/front of the arch of one foot. I really should get that looked at, it was getting better but now seems to be getting worse again.

But mostly I haven't been getting enough sleep and I find myself in a situation where I am very frustrated and want to lash out and say mean things and it's all I can do to be civil and not make things worse than they already are. Knowing that I was close to firing off more incindiary emails, I elected to get out and try to calm down. At least that part worked.

trail 33:40 [3]

TNT - and NOT by myself. It was going to be a solo effort but I think we have two new recruits. I got an email this morning asking if we still did tnt (it's listed on the DVOA website) and so Martin Forsberg - how can he not orienteer with a name like that and being from Sweden and all - and his friend Mike came this evening to check it out. They elected to run my short hill loop with me as an introduction, but clearly they will be running with the faster guys in the future. And they're especially looking forward to the O discussions over dinner!

strength & stretching 1:15:00 intensity: (15:00 @0) + (15:00 @1) + (45:00 @2)

Yoga class. I'm out of shape - I was getting tired in lots of poses that I used to be able to hold for a while. :(
