Note

Missed Tuesday TNT again doing school work. And the next few weeks are only going to get worse...

Note

Need to get more disciplined about doing strength/core workouts. At least I have been doing 5-10 minutes of yoga most nights.

Monday Mar 30, 2009 #

Note

As a colleague said, this reminds me of office hours sometimes...

orienteering race 59:25 [3]

Weird day. Probably close to 10 minutes of errors but physically I felt better than I have in a long time. Controls #2 and #7 were right next to each other and so of course I was looking for #7 around where #2 was and nothing was making sense. Finally sorted that out but then followed the line to #6 instead of #3 and was half way there before I realized that. Lost concentration going to #6 and went up the wrong reentrant; figured it out quite quickly and it would have only been a 10-20 second error but then I was very sloppy correcting and lost another minute by not knowing which way to turn after getting into the right reentrant. Bleah. Then had a lot of trouble reading the map at #7 and wasted another couple of minutes.

But I felt so good running that the day felt like a success. And given that I was not getting much sleep and helping out at results, perhaps I have an excuse for not being mentally on top of things.

I still like Brown.

orienteering race 42:26 [3]

Middle distance course. Only a couple of small hesitations/bobbles but no real problems. The long field run at the end was a killer.

I like Brown.

running 55:08 [3]

TNT - 3 miles on the drive with Jim at 10:30 pace plus the up and down which I walked. Karl did his run and Sandy did the core workout.

Felt like a slug. Not sure why. Maybe I ate too much today. Haven't had enough sleep lately either.

Yoga/Pilates 10:00 [1]

Started doing some yoga at night again.

Hickory Run?

orienteering 1:01:04 [3]

A very fun course on the great Hickory Run terrain. A few small bobbles - but not more than a minute total. It was hard to run a lot though.

The best part of the day was seeing the SJU students who came; they were reallly enthusiastic and they managed to finish a difficult Orange course on only their second ever orienteering outing.

HAT Run - help Valerie time

Note

A long but fun day.

trail 40:00 [3]

TNT - most likely the last one in Media. Ran the trails in Tyler with Jim and Eric.

warm up/cool down 14:03 [3]

Knee started hurting after crossing the road so I walked the last bit back to the cars.

Tuesday Mar 17, 2009 #

running 42:23 [3] 4.0 mi (10:36 / mi)

TNT - 4 miles on the drive. Started with Bob at about 11 minute pace. Got a little faster towards the end but felt like I was struggling the whole time.

warm up/cool down 21:19 [3]

The up and down. Jogged most of Cathedral both ways.

Note

An era has come to an end. But TNT will go on.

Monday Mar 16, 2009 #

Note

Knee feels much better this morning so I'm definitely sticking with the yard work being the culprit this time around. That's a relief!

Sunday Mar 15, 2009 #

running 53:49 [3] 5.0 mi (10:46 / mi)

Long day but got a run in before dark. No energy.

Knee was bothering me this morning but in a way that makes me think it was from the yard work I did yesterday. I'll have to be more careful. Don't think the run made it worse. We'll see.

warm up/cool down 25:00 [3]

The walk down to the drive and back home. Didn't run any of it - the five miles was all I had in me today.

Stretched when I got home.

Saturday Mar 14, 2009 #

hiking 1:30:00 [1]

Hiked over to Chestnut Hill and back at a good pace.

Note

Followed by lots of yard work. Things are blooming already.

Thursday Mar 12, 2009 #

trail 30:00 [3]

TNT - with Eric in Tyler. Deliberately kept it short since I don't usually run two days in a row and my knees aren't quite back to normal. Huffing and puffing despite going very slowly, but also talking most of the way even on a lot of the hills.

strength & stretching 20:00 [3]

Walking and stretching and some yoga and some strength in the parking lot trying to keep warm while waiting for Eric and Clem to finish.

trail (Short hill loop) 35:30 [3]

Pretty slow time for the loop; still recovering from Saturday I guess. Toe is still very sore - starting to wonder if it's infected. Knee so-so. But felt great to get outside and do something after many, many hours at a computer the last few days.

Note

Got the NSF grant proposal submitted. There's supposed to be lots of extra dollars from the stimulus bill; maybe it will get funded.

Test run of the Fair Hill Marathon

rogaine 10:50:00 [3] 30.1 mi (21:36 / mi)

Tom's O marathon course at Fair Hill as rogaine training.
(Not sure about the distance we covered; Valerie will have it on her Forerunner. I think I remember correctly what she said though.)

This is a GREAT course. The first half was tougher - more hills and more off the straight line and more detailed navigation and route choice. The second half was a bit easier, less climb, more legs where you just went straight and didn't have to think too hard - we did it in an hour less time than the first half. I really hope a lot of people sign up for this; it was a lot of fun.

My knees are sore but not too bad. I'm going to lose one toenail (blood blister under the nail) but no other foot problems. Valerie had some blister problems but toughed it out. The trails were quite muddy in spots and the slipping and sliding took its toll. We carried packs to simulate a rogaine and I had plenty of water. It was a gorgeous day but 10 or 20 degrees cooler would probably have been better for this.

Friday Mar 6, 2009 #

Note

Knee got a little worse Thursday but was good all day today. Just in time to trash it tomorrow!

The MoboGoGlobo thing sounds fun but it conflicts with Hickory Run. And since some St. Joe's kids are coming to Hickory Run that wins out. I'm trying to get the kids to challenge some faculty but so far no takers.

Wednesday Mar 4, 2009 #

Note

Knee improving. Have iced it and stayed off it for the most part. Quite relieved.

Tuesday Mar 3, 2009 #

Note

My knee is hurting in a very different way making going up stairs quite painful. It's always been down that was a problem, never up. Hopefully it is just something temporary. But it's making me reluctant to do much.

Note

It's Dennis's 21st birthday today. My kids are all grown up...

strength & stretching (Core DVD) 40:00 [1]

TNT - Sandy and I elected to work out in the relative warmth and safety of the basement while Greg and Karl braved the cold and ice of the Wissahickon.

Yoga/Pilates 10:00 [1]

Added on some Power Yoga afterwards - just the vinyasas.

Sunday Mar 1, 2009 #

trail 33:59 [3]

Short hill loop. Felt very slow, like I was barely picking up my feet.

No snow yet, but we're supposed to get a bunch tonight!
