running 1:13:22 [3]

TNT - 5 miles on the drive plus the 3/4 down and 3/4 back up, mostly with Dasha and Alison. Anne, John, Bob, Jim and Clem also there. Started out at just over 9 minute pace for a few halves, but then I had to slow it down and I got slower and slower until I had to walk half a mile in 9 minutes before finishing the last half in 4:45. Felt tired from the beginning.

trail 31:42 [3]

Quick run on the trails through the meadows after a bunch of yard work to loosen up.

map hiking 20:00 [3]

Schlepping water for a rogaine control.

map hiking 4:00:00 [3]

Hanging controls for the rogaine. Couldn't find the streamers on a couple so spent a lot of time double checking that I was on the right feature. Woods were pretty nice where I was. The deer exclosure had a nice trail around it and I lucked out that it only forced me maybe 200m out of my way.

trail 1:00:31 [3]

TNT - trails with Alison and Dasha. Took it easy to spare the ankle; icing when I finished helped.

Monday May 22, 2006 #

Note

Ankle is somewhat swollen and bruised, but not too bad. Will need to stay off it a couple of days most likely, but might be able to bike by tomorrow. Knees and hips are feeling good though!

orienteering race 1:20:51 [4] 5.8 km (13:56 / km) +155m 12:18 / km

Classic course at Team Trials. Some good, some bad.
Bad: turned my ankle about 500m into the course.
Good: was able to shake it off after about another 1k
Bad: woods were thick and I had trouble reading contours and staying on bearing
Good: was able to hit most controls relatively cleanly anyway
Bad: made one stupid big error and several smaller ones in the circle
Good: didn't let it bother me and kept focused
Bad: didn't always have a good plan for a whole leg
Good: knew when I needed to make sure I knew where I was and when I could be a little looser

Not sure whether it was the ankle, the vegetation or just not in good enough condition but I wasn't able to push the pace at all.

warm up/cool down 12:00 [1]

Easy jogging to warm up.

orienteering race 37:29 [4] 3.6 km (10:25 / km) +75m 9:26 / km

Short Course at the Team Trials. An interesting race: an excellent result (2nd on green overall), running felt strong and easy and I only walked in a couple of places where it was thick, but I couldn't hold a bearing and was always correcting. Luckily I was reading the map well, my pace-counting was on target, and except for #4 always knew which way to turn if the control wasn't where I expected it. But it sure made for a nervous feeling race!

warm up/cool down 15:00 [1]

A decent warm-up; felt good.

orienteering race 24:26 [4]

Sprint race at the team trials. Pleasantly surprised by the result since I didn't feel particularly good running. But I was able to read the map well and had very few hesitations so I guess that paid off. Was able to run most of the course.

warm up/cool down 10:00 [1]

Jogging around the campus trying to loosen up.

biking 45:00 [3]

Running errands on the other side of the Wissahickon so took my bike through the park - some trails, mostly roads, many hills.

running 1:05:10 [3]

TNT - nice crowd. Normal 5 miles on the drive in about 47; started with Anne and Bob but couldn't stay with them after about 2miles. Dasha was kind and stayed with me.

Sunday May 14, 2006 #

orienteering race 1:08:57 [3] *** 5.2 km (13:16 / km)

Iron Hill green course. Messed up 3 & 4 losing many minutes; relatively clean to everything else. The woods were thick but easy to move through in places - as in no prickers and thorns to grab you, just stuff everywhere. Enjoyed myself which I didn't expect - the vegetation seemed much more benign than in the past.

Friday May 12, 2006 #

Note

Again, hip is okay while running, but hurts when standing up after sitting for a while. Guess I just have to not sit down! Feels a little better this morning - did some new stretches last night.

running 27:49 [3] 3.0 mi (9:16 / mi)

Didn't feel particularly good, but good enough to try and push hard for three miles. I wasn't as tough mentally as last time, letting the pace drop several times. But I'm still pleased with the effort.

warm up/cool down 36:03 [1]

Getting down to the drive and back home.

trail 1:06:35 [3]

TNT - trail run with Dasha and Anne. A nice refreshing run in the rain; ran part of our normal route backwards so long, slow uphills and quick, steep downhills instead of the other way around.

Wednesday May 10, 2006 #

walking 1:01:00 [1]

Walk home from the bus stop.

There was a guy on the drive playing something similar sounding to a steel drum but it was kind of flying saucer shaped, convex not concave and he was playing it with his hands not sticks. The sound was extraordinary, so beautiful - incredibly rich but clear tones. I was mesmerized.

running 1:07:33 [3]

TNT - trail run with Anne, Lou and Jim. (Followed by a yummy salmon dish a la Anne and strawberry short cake.)

Took some time off this weekend; my hip has been hurting and I'm not sure what the problem is. It doesn't hurt at all when I run, but after sitting for a while when I stand up there's severe pain. I had something similar a few years ago and stretching seemed to take care of it but that hasn't helped this time around. I thought maybe resting it would help but either housework and yardwork doesn't count as resting or resting isn't the answer. Anyway, too little exercise and too many occasions for overeating made tonight's run hard work - mostly a slog, but at least Anne and I pushed the pace for the last half mile.

running 1:14:00 [3]

TNT - ran with Anne and Dasha in Tyler. We all managed to "run" up all the hills. Making progress...

Interestingly, as soon as we got out of the woods and we had to go on the road and then through the school parking lots, all my joints started to complain. I had been feeling pretty good on the trails but I just could not get comfortable. Gave up and walked the last 5 minutes back to the cars.

Tuesday May 2, 2006 #

running 1:01:05 [3]

TNT - Andorra. No Anne or Dasha. Felt tired and sore so only did 4mi at a slow pace. Guess it's the effects of the weekend, too much work, and too little sleep.
