trail 25:00 [3] 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Probably about 2 miles and probably about 25 minutes. Got down to the end of the block and realized I hadn't put my watch on, started to go back for it, and then decided I didn't really need to know anything it could tell me.

Nice easy jog on the trails, just trying to keep a steady pace on the hills (and in the woods for a bit when I decided to investigate a deer trail that quickly disappeared and I just kept going until I hit another trail). Felt pretty good for not having run in a while.

Note

A great weekend at the Water Gap - lots of really nice people in orienteering.

orienteering 6:00:00 [1]

Hanging flags and hauling water for the courses for the Water Gap weekend.

gym 44:00 [3]

30 minutes on the elliptical - interval program
14 minutes of warm up, cool down, weight machines, situps and stretching

orienteering race 1:34:00 [3] *** 7.12 km (13:12 / km)

Red course at French Creek East. For some reason the climb seemed pretty inconsequential. It was 210 m but I mostly felt I had to force myself to go downhill - odd feeling. And there were route choices that kept you out of most of the rock - very nice course design. And though my time is pretty slow compared to others, I felt like I ran more than usual in the woods. I'll be curious to compare splits when I get around to entering them.

orienteering race 26:37 [4] 2.67 km (9:58 / km) +45m 9:12 / km

Sprint course at Green Lane. Was having a reasonably decent run, moving okay, a couple bits of sloppiness but not too bad, and then I went brain dead and totally botched #17. I made a silly route choice, and then didn't execute it. The funny thing is that I was so set on doing what I had originally intended to do that I couldn't capitalize on my error and just use a different route when I saw where I was, one which would have in fact been much better. At a slower pace I would easily have corrected so I guess I was pushing it more than I realized.

A fun day. Got lucky with the weather - not 5 minutes after putting away the computer (for epunching), it rained really hard for a few minutes. It had been complete sunshine, no clouds at all, all morning long and so I hadn't given a thought to things getting rained on.

orienteering 3:00:00 [1]

Field checking at the Water Gap. Sprints are more like really, really, really short courses with lots of controls. Hope people enjoy them.

orienteering race 1:36:33 [3]

Mont Alto score. Never been on the map and really enjoyed it. Kathleen Lennon and I went together and I tried to tell her what I was doing as I was going along. Mostly I was recovering from errors! Very, very sloppy in several places. But a great time and good exercise. It's amazing how fast the time goes by when you have company.

biking 52:00 [3]

up and down the roads into and out of the valley - about 2 minutes from the top of one to the bottom of the other and 8 minutes up to the top x 4 plus getting started and getting home

running 43:41 [3]

jog down (8:42), 2 miles along Forbidden Drive (5:12, 5:13,5:15,5:05), mostly walking back home but threw in a little section of jogging up the hill (14:14). Ankle almost 100%. Breathing miserable.

biking 1:01:00 [2]

Biked to work for a meeting. Took it easy - ankle was fine but leg muscles (and rear end!) were still sore.

trail 10:00 [1]

Tried to go for a slow, easy run on the trails, but after about 10 minutes my ankle was throbbing, so I just walked for about another half hour. There's very little swelling so I thought the ankle would probably be okay, but there is a lot of discoloration, so I guess it's bruised somewhat.

Genesis Sprint AR at Harriman

adventure race race 7:40:00 [3]

Genesis AR in Harriman SP with Brad Whitmore. Started with an O course - luckily we had the Silvermine map so the navigation (Brad did it all) was straightforward. Did some jogging on trails but mostly stayed in the woods. Rolled my ankle on the way to CP2, but it never got too bad. Next we biked on roads down to the lakes for a kayak section. This was mostly a long gentle uphill and by the end my legs were toast. The kayaking was tough - need to do more strength work I guess if I'm going to do more of these. Portaging the kayak up the hill was brutal; kept falling. Biking back was almost all downhill which was great but totally froze my wet feet so when we had to hike the bikes along a trail I couldn't feel them at all. Brad pushed my bike almost the whole way, me stumbling along behind. The last biking section on trails was grueling - had to walk the bike a lot. But hung in there. (Joe B. and Erin won in 5:12.)

gym 25:08 [3] 3.0 mi (8:23 / mi)

3 miles on the elliptic trainer; nice and easy on the knees. Not too high on the resistance, kept the pace up.

Another 5 minutes of cool down and then stretching.

running 51:40 [3]

3 mile jog along the drive (10:15, 10:11,10:04)
9:20 jogging down; 11:50 home
Wanted to quit after 2 but stuck to the plan. Given my recent attempts to run I was rather pleased with this effort.

Did an hour of yard work to warm up my knees. This seems to work actually which is good for my yard but does mean that workouts take a bit longer! I took a hit of my asthma inhaler before I left and while my breathing was still pretty ragged it seemed better than it has for the last two or three weeks so I guess it's back to the doctor to see if I can figure out something that helps that won't land me in the hospital again.

orienteering race 1:26:03 [5] *** 5.76 km (14:56 / km) +225m 12:30 / km

Another great day in the woods. I truly love the terrain in Harriman and thought the green x courses this weekend were excellent. Made an error at 5 (got too far east) but recovered reasonably fast. Not particularly fast anywhere but kept moving and was pretty clean other than 5.
