gym 45:00 [3]

30 min interval program on the elliptical & 15 min weights (arms and abs). The interval program was tough but fun: 2 mins at 200+ strides per min on a steep incline, then 2 mins at 160+ strides per min recovery. Tempted to bale on the last two intervals but didn't. Don't know how accurate the heart monitor is using the hand holds, but it was registering over 170 during the hard, 145-150 during the recovery.

walking 1:45:00 [1]

Walking on the snow packed trails; hip is better but still occasional twinges.

Saturday Jan 29, 2005 #

walking 1:00:00 [1]

Hiked around on the trails in the Wissahickon. Lots of snow packed down on the rocks which makes the downhills on the trails easier.

treadmill 20:00 [3]

...not really injured, but a nagging pain in my hip is making me cautious...

gym 1:00:00 [3]

After almost a week off due to cold, snow, busy at work and just needing some time off, I finally made it back to the gym. Workout was 20 minutes climbing stairs, 20 minutes on the elliptical and 20 minutes on various weight machines (mostly upper body).

Thursday Jan 20, 2005 #

running 54:45 [3]

3 miles on the flat gravel trail by the creek at about 10 minute pace plus getting down there and back up. Everything was covered with an inch or so of packed snow making things very slippery. It's been pretty cold the last few days but at least it's staying lighter later.

Wednesday Jan 19, 2005 #

gym 45:00 [3]

20 mins on the stairs; 10 on the elliptic; 15 on various weight machines (upper body); some situps and stretching

Monday Jan 17, 2005 #

running 1:14:14 [3]

5 miles on the gravel path along the creek, 25:23 out and 25:33 back plus walking down and back up. Felt really leaden - combination of cold and needing a day off I think.

orienteering 1:04:20 [3] 4.5 km (14:18 / km)

Memory O course at Hibernia. Messed up one control - didn't memorize far enough off my intended route and had trouble relocating - and then later got stuck in some nasty briars. Fun though.

Saturday Jan 15, 2005 #

trail 52:00 [3]

hill route - kept up a jog on all the uphills and in the woods

Thursday Jan 13, 2005 #

gym 40:00 [2]

30 min circuit on the weight machines + 10 minute warm up on the elliptical runner

Wednesday Jan 12, 2005 #

running 27:24 [3] 3.0 mi (9:08 / mi)

Jogged down by the creek; intended to run on the trails but it was wet and foggy and getting dark and I was nervous about the footing.

running 28:00 [3]

Jogging slowly down to the trail and then back up the hill home with Dennis. A couple of minutes stretching.

running (track) 30:00 [3] 3.25 mi (9:14 / mi)

Kid schedules & meetings meant I had to be at school all day so I ran on the track at school in the early afternoon: warm up 4 laps (~10 mins), hard for ~120m recover rest of lap x 4 (33, 1:42, 32, 1:43, 33, 1:45, 32, 1:45), cool down 5 laps (~11 mins). First time I've tried something like that and it was fun despite the very light rain/hail that was coming down off and on.

Monday Jan 10, 2005 #

gym 40:00 [3]

20 mins on the arc trainer (similar to an elliptic)
20 mins various weight machines

Sunday Jan 9, 2005 #

running 1:09:30 [3]

5 miles along the creek (flat, wide trail): 9:59, 9:10, 9:17, 9:18, 9:48. Jogged down and about half of the way up the hill home. What a difference: cool but not cold, humid air at sea level. I could breathe!

Saturday Jan 8, 2005 #

running 5:00 [3]

Had to run from the end of one terminal to the train and then from the train to the end of another terminal; made my plane connection with about 1 minute to spare. :)

Friday Jan 7, 2005 #

snowhoe (classic) 1:00:00 [2]

half in the woods (uphill); half on groomed trails (downhill)

running 35:00 [3]

out and back on dirt roads; ran into the wind (the very cold wind) for a while, then turned around when I'd had enough.

Thursday Jan 6, 2005 #

snowhoe (classic) 2:10:00 [2]

Mostly on non-grromed trails in the woods but then had to try and book it back since I was longer than planned so stayed on the groomed trails. I'm a pretty pathetic skier though so my max effort isn't that fast.

Wednesday Jan 5, 2005 #

running 30:00 [3]

Slow running on the snow covered roads and dirt roads. Very cold - only lasted 30 minutes!

stationary bike 30:00 [2]

worked up a sweat but was reading the whole time so not really pushing it.

Tuesday Jan 4, 2005 #

Note

Walked around town and on some trails for a couple of hours but very leisurely so I won't count it as training; needed a day off to rest my knees.

Monday Jan 3, 2005 #

trail 50:00 [3]

45 minutes of easy jogging on flat dirt roads and 5 minutes of sprinting up and walking down a very short hill (10 times).

Sunday Jan 2, 2005 #

trail 40:00 [3]

Walked for a little more than an hour on the Plutonic Pleasures map and then ran up and back a trail twice (for 40 mins). I didn't think the trail had much elevation difference which is why I chose that route, buy my lungs said otherwise; definitely much harder one direction than the other. Even a slight uphill is tough for me at altitude.

Saturday Jan 1, 2005 #

trail 59:00 [3]

Jogging (slowly) on a snowshoe trail. The altitude, cold and occasional soft spot in the snow made it hard work even at a slow pace and it took some effort to keep moving on the uphills. I did for the most part but had to walk in a few places when my breathing was just too ragged.
