strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

Session with Kelly. Actually did some pushups today and my shoulder didn't explode. Progress!

trail 58:46 [3] 3.21 mi (18:18 / mi) +94m 16:47 / mi

Started hiking with Sandy but her ankle was bothering so we turned around. I decided to keep going in that direction and since there are a lot of nice gentle downhills going that way I was inspired to jog a whole bunch of them. It was fun just jogging when I felt like it and walking when I didn't.

Session with Kelly - felt decent for most of this.

Note

Managed to leave a control out in the woods on Sunday; luckily Greg is planning to train up at HR this week and volunteered to get it.

Note

Made a doctor's appt. just to make sure there's no medical reason that I'm so tired all the time lately. Showed up today only to be told I had made it for next week. My brain is also tired apparently.

USARA - course setter for part of it

Picking up the last of the controls.

Thanks to Clem for picking up the lion's share.

I do like the Shades of Death map but I won't mind not seeing for a while.

The AR was a lot of work but for the most part I could plan ahead and get things done on my own schedule. My little piece was pretty self-contained so I didn't need to coordinate with many others. The O section was a small percentage of the full race and all the controls were optional. Many teams elected to skip some far out ones or the interior loop, some chose to do just a handful of easy controls along the road and many teams skipped it entirely knowing they needed to get to the finish by the cut-off. But those that did do it said they enjoyed it so that was good.

Picking up some of the controls after the race was over.

map hiking 1:30:00 [3]

Checking flags for USARA. Everything was still where it was supposed to be.

Petr was a rock-star getting to all the ones off the perimeter trails. For the ones I did, you could see some from the road so they were easy and I've done the interior loop enough times that I could probably do it without the map.

strength & stretching 45:00 [3]

Workout with Kelly. Feeling the hills from yesterday. Also lots of snap, crackle, pop in my shoulder - have to be careful not to overdo it.

hiking 1:09:53 [3] 3.28 mi (21:18 / mi) +115m 19:13 / mi

Hill repeats with Sandy. This was hard and it took me a while to get my breathing back to normal after the 5th one. Having company was key to getting it done.

Note

Ha! Glen Tryson was helping me hang flags for the AR and found my hiking pole! He said it was hanging right by one of the controls so either it very sneakily snagged itself on a branch while I was hanging the streamer there or someone (can't imagine who though) found it nearby and hung it by the streamer. Either way, how extraordinary!

Hanging controls. With help from Glen and Bob Fink. Sure was grateful I didn't have to do it all myself!!

Stupid at the end (meaning I was stupid) but otherwise had a fun time.

orienteering 1:36:46 [3]

Only one error but just had no motivation to do anything other than slog around the course.

Kelly session. (She had to cancel on Tuesday and I did not get it together to do anything on my own.)

orienteering race 1:17:53 [3]

4.3 km Brown course at Hickory Run. Some good legs, some use of sketchy features on what otherwise could have been good legs, some easy legs and some boring legs since I had already done them during the night-o. My back was really sore from doing the night-o and jogging some of the trails and roads on that and then sleeping on the wooden bunks in the cabins. So running was not an option and toady was all at a steady walk. Spiked pretty much everything though so that was good.

And, I had one pair of new contacts that I was planning to test this weekend and they worked well. So hopefully I can start using them for orienteering again now that I have my allergy issues under control. So eyewear success!

orienteering race 1:18:30 [3]

3.1 km Advanced Night-O course. Dithered about going out or not and by the time I decided I did want to go out, Anne had given up hope and bailed so then I didn't have a buddy. I was tired enough and I'm feeling fragile enough that there was no way I was going out there on my own, but Sam Kolins took pity on me and agreed to "shadow" me around the course since he still had plenty of energy after doing the course.

Was good up to 4 but then I just could not read the map as my glasses fogged up big time and I had to resort to just looking at the map without any glasses which means I can sort of see some things like roads and so on but not details. I know that park well enough that it wasn't a total disaster but I somehow got totally turned around on the way to #5. I mean really discombobulated - I was sure south was one direction when it was about 120 degrees in a different direction. Finally bailed, hit something I recognized and then went pretty much right to the control. But probably a 12-13 minute error. Hit everything else without too much trouble but had to ask Sam occasionally to decipher some of the details on the map. So fail on the eyewear. But glad I went out.

Kelly workout. Really liked today's workout for some reason.

Yoga class. Still not sure if my knee can handle this well enough to make it worthwhile.

walk/jog 1:03:14 [3] 3.34 mi (18:56 / mi) +104m 17:16 / mi

Time to start trying to jog again! Four short bits of jogging on the drive with Sandy - two lightposts jogging; 4 walking. Plus down and up.

hiking 3:04:50 [3] 8.15 mi (22:41 / mi) +237m 20:48 / mi

Three times around the meadow loop with side trips on the first two down to the drive and back up. I was worried my back would start to hurt so wanted to stay close so I could bail at any time. Started to feel a few twinges about halfway through the third loop so skipped the trip down to the drive and called it a day. Luckily, the twinges never got any worse so I'm calling this a success.
