Note

TNT fail. But printed maps and bagged and sealed with Clem and Dasha for Ridley this weekend so not a total waste of an evening.

Note

Stopped by the Ahlswede's this morning on my way to work so Sandy could do an emergency tick-ectomy on the back of my head. I tried to get it myself but decided professional help was best.

hiking 40:00 [3]

Morning hike in the Wissahickon. Surprisingly unsore.

orienteering 56:51 [3]

Star Village Brown course. No real errors but definitely not moving fast in the rocky ground with lots of deadfall. Knew enough to ignore trails but got a little lucky on the two legs through the green on the hillside towards the end of the course. I did know about where I was so knew when to start looking for the controls and sure enough my compass work was accurate enough so that I didn't lose much time other than some hesitation near the end of each leg

Had a former student - now a grad student at Lehigh - and 3 current students show up. The Lehigh student did a very respectable job on green for his 2nd ever orienteering course. The 3 SJU students went out as a group on orange and did fine for the first half. But no one mentioned that the numbers on the control description meant anything (I was still out on my course when they arrived) so once they messed up one control, punching and thinking they were at their control when they weren't, they got quite turned around and finally bailed by walking to the top of the hill knowing that would get them back. They were in good spirits when they came in despite being out for 3 hours and climbing up and down the brutal hills.

walk/jog 55:00 [3]

TNT at Clem and Dasha's. (Thanksgiving meal #3!)

Went with Eric and Dasha. Knowing the tough terrain on Sunday, stopped trying to jog after about 30 minutes and walked it in.

trail 35:44 [3]

Normal Wissahickon loop.

Warmed up by doing some yard work, getting the worst of the piles of debris into bags before my family comes over tomorrow. And it definitely warmed me up so that running felt okay.

running 45:00 [3]

TNT - Clem joined me to run in the rain. Karl showed up for dinner bringing peanut soup and Sandy showed up at the tail end with cookies!

Walked down to the drive, ran a mile out then a mile back, then walked back up the hill. Jogged part of the road home. First mile in 10:30, second in 11:00. Thought I was moving a little faster but at least it felt easier than last week. Very glad I got out.

hiking 40:00 [3]

Early morning hike in a very light rain that stopped halfway through. Pretty sore - as I expected - but nothing was really painful. Knees are still both a bit swollen but the icing and ibuprofen is working it's usual magic.

Did my good deed for the day. As I was leaving for work I noticed a cute little dog in my yard. Had tags with an address and I convinced it to follow me around the block and back home where the owner was just getting ready to go looking - the dog had gotten out of a gate left open accidentally.

orienteering race 1:05:05 [4]

Brown course at Governor Dick.

This was a bit bizarre - there was a control inside a deer enclosure, a very large one with only a few gates. It was really, really, really hard to find the gates on the map and I eventually just resorted to running along the fence hoping I was going in the shortest direction to a gate. Not sure I picked the optimal routes. Also a tad pissed that someone climbed the fence even though we were told at the start not to and told that the gates were tough to see on the map but that we had to use them.

This could all have been avoided by having a map at the start with the gates clearly marked.

Anyway, a physically tough course with lots of climb and lots of rocky ground. My knees were not happy. I am not in very good shape. But I ended up with one of the better times on the course.

orienteering 16:16 [3]

And then I decided to run the relay. Istvan and Andras agreed to run with me - we made a 6 point team. I hobbled around as fast as I could but lots of little kids totally smoked me. But it was enough for the win in the 6 point category. And would have been 2nd in the 3 point! Istvan and Andras had good runs. :)

Knees really not happy with this one.

hiking 15:00 [3]

Went out searching for a very overtime person. She came in while I was out but Vadim called to let me know; I was already heading back.

Can barely walk this evening.

walk/jog 46:28 [3]

TNT - on my own while Nick and Karl ran Karl's workout. (So cool to see him stick to his training plan and be so prepared for the JFK 50. Can't wait to see how he does.) I was a little nervous running on my own but took my pepper spray. It's rare that I look forward to getting out to run so I didn't want to not go.

Walked down to the drive and ran two miles (10:54, 10:51) then walked back up. Iced my knees after I got back.

Great soup again by Karl.

More yard work. Lots of school work. No orienteering. :(

hiking 51:30 [3]

Early morning hike in the Wissahickon.

Followed by several hours of yardwork spread over the day. I dug up some bushes and moved them and did a lot of cleaning out of the flower beds and of course raking and cutting back of everything. I divided up some clumps of wild iris - they were big giant balls of roots that I had to hack at to separate. Still need to move a couple more things. Hope I'm not too sore to do more tomorrow.

My mulch pile is overflowing.

Thursday Nov 10, 2011 #

Note

I just took the time to thank a few people at work that are doing some good things and they were very appreciative that I took the time to say something. I need to remember to do that more often.

walk/jog 48:00 [3]

TNT - walk down to the drive with Bob and Jim and then a very slow 2 mile jog on the drive. Jim went on and did more and Karl was off on his own.

Excellent peanut soup for dinner.

orienteering 2:30:00 [3]

SVO Stumble Short Course - I know we were just a tad under 2:30 but not sure by how much. Although not planned ahead of time, did the course with Heidi and Valerie. As usual was way behind on the way to the first control but spent the time thinking about the windows. The first one was not at all obvious, the second was one of two choices. Opted for ADBC which I think was pretty optimal although CBAD was probably pretty good if you could hammer down the fields to C. I don't think our choice was popular but I think that's where we gained on a lot of people - our attack to B was easy. Took the little isthmus out of the window and met a lot of people going into 6 that surprised me.

My guess is that EFIGH was slightly better than FIGHE - which is what we did. There was most likely easy going along the ridge out of H. But we opted for the easier navigation and took the road out of E which made 13 really easy although we climbed a few extra contours. In hindsight, my guess is that backtracking out of 13 and going along the water was faster to 14 since it seemed to take forever to make my way down the steep slope.

A great day - glad I went. It was more challenging than SCEE would have been and worth the drive. We were the first women to finish the short (not counting Peggy who tag-teamed with Nadim for the long). I think we were 9th on the short, 20th overall.

A new towel to add to the collection. Love the purple!

Note

I'm not sure if I have my priorities straight...

Stayed at school until after 8 last night catching up on paperwork and didn't go to tnt. I am still not caught up. I just don't seem to be able to work as fast and efficiently as I used to.

trail 37:50 [3]

regular trail loop - jogged some, walked lots. Finished the last third by jogging 100 paces walking 50 just so I wouldn't walk everything. Depressing how fast I lose what little running fitness I gain.

30 pushups

Early TNT with Sandy down on the drive - alternating jogging slowly enough to talk with walking.

TNT - while the guys ran. Excellent clam chowder courtesy of Karl.
