map hiking 2:00:00 [1]

Another 5 hours wandering around HR. But this time I really am pretty much finished. Most of today was spent in the camp area where white and yellow will spend most of their time and trying to figure out how to make the finish and the flow of traffic - both cars and people - all work.

Saw a mama bear and two cubs - luckily they were on the other side of a biggish reentrant. But those cubs were only about a foot long so pretty young. They were very cute and scampered up a tree a few feet (maybe they heard me?) and then the mama bear came over and was guarding the tree. I decided to go the other way. Hopefully the bears won't be around during the event.

warm up/cool down 25:00 [1]

Walking down and back up. (Didn't get inspired to run any of it...)

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

A bit of the core workout since we didn't run very far. Need to do this more regularly.

orienteering race 17:37 [5] 2.5 km (7:03 / km)

Yellow course on the ill-fated 8 point DVOA relay team.

Note

Some last minute shuffling resulted in two golds and a bronze for the DVOA relay teams. All sorts of plans for next year's teams; wonder where the relays will be...

orienteering race 46:36 [4]

Not sure what to say about this race. I didn't really have any errors although I was a bit sloppy in a few places. But I obviously wasn't moving particularly well. I haven't had time to analyze splits, but I'm guessing I lost a lot of time on the downhill legs and then was just moving slowly everywhere else and so lost time there as well. What a change from the NAOC middle 2 years ago!

running 30:00 [3]

TNT - on my own in Tyler. Went a new way. Got to a road crossing after 30 minutes and decided not to push it so walked the rest of the way.

There was an area where they did a controlled burn. I wonder why they did it. I definitely should wear my contacts - my first reaction was, wow, look at that huge cliff face, why I have I never noticed that before. Then I could smell that something had been burning, but I just thought, oh, someone is burning leaves in their yard. Then as I got closer, I said, oh, wait, that's not rock, someone put up a fence - I wonder why they fenced in that field. Only when I was practically on top of it did I put it all together and realize what I was actually (not) seeing.

Leg felt fine while running, only a few little twinges afterwards. No idea what I did to make it hurt so much, but I'm glad it cleared up quickly.

Note

Stupidly, I didn't stretch after the run last night and today I have a weird injury. Something isn't lining up right at the top of my right leg and I'm getting shooting pains when I stand up and take the first few steps. I can work it out after a bit, but each time I sit or stand still, the first few steps are very painful. Hopefully this will go away before the weekend.

running 41:00 [3]

TNT. Did 4 miles on the drive - the first 3 in 29:45 and then I crashed and slowed way down. :(

warm up/cool down 22:00 [2]

Walking down to the drive, walking/jogging back up.

map hiking 5:00:00 [1]

Still more hiking around at Hickory Run. You'd think I'd be done by now wouldn't you...

The good news is the gates to the camp area where we'll be parking is now unlocked so I can drive a lot closer to things. The bad news is that the gate is unlocked because people are now using the camp areas and so I was feeling most unwelcome when I was trying to check some control locations in the camp and decided to leave before finishing. I'll have to try to make time on a weekday I guess to finish up.

running 46:15 [3]

TNT - trails at Tyler with Eric.
Slowly increasing distance and adding hills, one extra at a time.

walking 10:00 [3]

Back to the parking lot.

Tuesday Apr 8, 2008 #

walking 26:30 [1]

TNT - me, Karl, Jim and Bob.

Walk down and back up from the drive. The guys did their thing; I did mine.

running 39:42 [3] 4.0 mi (9:56 / mi)

4 miles on the drive:
512
951 (oops, forgot to take the split - head in the clouds)
445
506
435
520
453

It's an out and back - pretty easy to tell where the hills are! :)

Didn't feel any harder than last week, so encouraging.

map hiking 5:00:00 [1]

Streamering and field checking at Hickory Run. In the woods and on my feet for 6 hours but I did a good bit of standing around trying to make decisions. Getting close...

trail 42:00 [3]

TNT - ran trails in Tyler with Eric. Well, I ran, he walked. Legs were dead; no beers last night to blame it on so will just chalk it up to working late and not eating particularly well this week and/or the longer run Tuesday.

Got talked into doing pushups later; Eric and Tom did them as well. Could barely do any last night and was whining a bit about it but tonight they felt easy. Curious.

running 42:20 [3] 4.0 mi (10:35 / mi)

TNT - 4 miles on the drive. First time I've done more than 3 at a continuous jog. Decided I would go as slowly as needed to finish and was pleasantly surprised at the pace since it felt pretty easy. What a difference from a couple of months ago when I wasn't sure there was any running in my future.

walking 24:55 [3]

The walk down to the drive and back up. Didn't jog any of the hill home but I didn't want to overdo it. :)
