Orienteering 1:14:00 [3] 9.11 km (8:07 / km)
ahr:135 max:167

Some JK relevent training with Magic, Nixon, Jamie S and Rog and Auchingarrich.
Tough forest but dry underfoot and sunny conditions, good banter and good map and terrain time. 2 x short/middle courses on 1:10.

4 PM

Orienteering 39:00 [4] 5.0 km (7:48 / km)
ahr:143 max:165

Another tough day at work - never managed to meet Marcus at lunchtime but did manage to leave early. Off to Polmaise to run the last night race course, loops in reverse. 5k of good orienteering, occasionally spooked by MBKers. Enjoying the dry sunny weather.
Not sure if I beat Doug's night race time!

Orienteering 1:10:00 [4] 6.81 km (10:17 / km)
ahr:131 max:165

Training with Jon Croos in Sauchie.
Checking out the runnability. Mainly good in the middle section - hardly had to veer much off our course at all. A very spikey forest - both of us lacerated by bracnhes.
Feeling a bit spritely after a few days easy, but still struggling on the bigger climbs. Jon going well despite a hard hill session yesterday.

Tuesday Mar 27, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Long, hard day at work and more job application stress.
This isn't like me at all!

No training.

Monday Mar 26, 2012 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [3]

FVO Pilates & Stretching.
Shuffled down, managed a pilates session and then subsided on the circuits. Really tired - not helped by hard day at work and job application stress.

Sunday Mar 25, 2012 #

Orienteering race 35:54 [5] 6.1 km (5:53 / km)
ahr:171 max:175

British Middle Distance Champs, Strensall, York.
Psyched up and ready to race (but feeling sore from yesterday and tight ITB). Started well but soon came a cropper on the crap map. Too many point features in the wrong place and hard to understand vegetation layer. Pushing hard all the way but knowing that this kind of sloppy orienteering wasn't going to be a winner for me. Managed 3rd again (just beaten by Steve Watkins and 90 secs to Richard B. Happy with the result given how crap the o felt. Racing hard and feeling good about that side of things.
Knackered now.

11 AM

Orienteering race 15:12 [5]
ahr:171 max:180

British Champs Sprint Qualifer, York Uni
Took things steady, judged the wrong height on the daffodil hill but qualified fine in 2nd place.
3 PM

Orienteering 14:28 [5]
ahr:173 max:183

British Champs Sprint Final, York Uni.
Starting one minute behind Andy. Get into a frazzle at one in the ornamental garden but the mistake means I know where 2 is - back on track. OK until the stairs at 5 where the description said northern stairwell bottom of - I went there but it was northern stairwell above your head bottom of! Moving OK after it and despite not picking the best lines to one or two I made no gross errors and saw Andy as I approached the spectator. He wasn't much help on the final loop (taking some longer lines) so managed to almost reel him in until he powered the finish.
3rd place 16 secs behind Richard Barrett and 26 secs ehind James Logue. That'll do.
4 PM

Run warm up/down 50:00 [3]

Lots of warming up and down before and after each race.

Friday Mar 23, 2012 #

Run 15:00 [2]

A jog round Harlow Carr in Harrogate after driving down from Scotland. Just what the doctor ordered.
Plenty of stretching.

Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 #

Orienteering race 36:33 [5] 4.8 km (7:37 / km)
ahr:158 max:174

FVO's last Night Race at Bantaskine, Falkirk planned by Rog.
What a fabby little area with lots of interesting bits. Rog planned a multi-loop course taking in all the interesting bits and despite the brambles down the hill from no1 it was very nice and much fun. I ran ok and tried. Came 2nd but only because Marcus and Jon's headlamps failed and Fraser tried scaling a cliff. Will won in 32.
Good use of a small area. Great grub at the Beancross after too (3 course for £10!).

Run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

Tuesday Mar 20, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Meant to run today but as we were leaving the door for nursery Matthew's bottom exploded all over the kitchen (thankfully he'd chosen the hard flooring to flood on!). Spent the whole morning at home battling poo.
Then had to catch up with heavy end of year stuff at work (lunch on the go) and got home just in time for tea at 7:30, in no mood to train.

Monday Mar 19, 2012 #

Pilates 1:10:00 [3]

FVO Pilates and Conditioning.
Very tired from the weekend but put in a half decent pilates session and did some of the circuits. Tired man, tired.

Sunday Mar 18, 2012 #

Orienteering race 1:15:49 [5] 8.8 km (8:37 / km) +345m 7:12 / km
ahr:161 max:174

Oban Weekend - SOL 1 on Torinturk.
So glad I missed this at the 6 days - a tough hillside with a small bit of nice woodland. The planner had overplanned and the climb was brutal (did over 400m) and I was really feeling yesterday (one hit wonder, still!).
Started well and caught Ackers who kept me motivated on the open fell (he was stronger than me on the climbs but weaker on the descents and not always taking the cleaner lines). Managed to pull away from him near the end after a better route choice.
I couldn't have gone harder. Rog beat me fair and square despite losing 5 mins on one control.
Rog 2: Jase 2.
1st M40.
A good tough weekend - just what is needed 3 weeks before the JK.

Run warm up/down 25:00 [3]

And standing in the loch after the finish.

Saturday Mar 17, 2012 #

Run 42:27 [3] 5.7 km (7:27 / km) +290m 5:56 / km
ahr:164 max:172

Oban Weekend Middle Race on Coille Nathais.
Really up for this as the area looked cracking. Pushed hard from the start and was pretty clean all the way round apart from a wobble at 4 because of the dated veg mapping. Brutally soft underfoot but some fabulous bist of white woodland and great controur navigation.
4th place. Jegor 37, James and Marcus 40.
2-1 between me and Rog.
1st M40.
Club social at the Corran House in the evening (beers!).

Run 30:00 [3]

Warm up and down with Marcus.

Wednesday Mar 14, 2012 #

Run 1:19:30 [4] 11.5 km (6:55 / km) +205m 6:21 / km
ahr:130 max:165

FVO Headlamp run from Bridge of Allan.
Have finally got a map of the Allan Water valley and its surroundings!
A really nice run up the valley on small footpaths with a large posse. Some good speed at times and very enjoyable terrains.
Topped off by good company and food at the Bridge Inn.

Tuesday Mar 13, 2012 #

Run 33:00 [3]
ahr:133 max:158

Steady luchtime run. Still feeling calf but not too bad and feeling quite sprightly. Bumped into Angela Mudge and dogs and walked back a bit with her hence short time.

Monday Mar 12, 2012 #

Pilates 1:10:00 [3]

FVO Pilates & Conditioning.
A good pilates session and a power circuits session - not that I was powering anywhere. Looking after my calf and the rest of my achey, sore body.

Sunday Mar 11, 2012 #

Orienteering 1:03:11 [4] 9.0 km (7:01 / km)
ahr:143 max:165

Back and glutes feeling better after loads of stretching yesterday.
Orienteering in Tomvaich and Anagach with Marcus with jogs between sessions.
Calf flaired up on 2nd session so missed the last one (which was the most thinned). I don't think it's too serious....

Great weekend of training in Speyside.

Saturday Mar 10, 2012 #

Run 2:05:14 [4] 21.5 km (5:49 / km)
ahr:136 max:167

An adventurous run with Marcus!
Got dropped on a back road south of Nethy Bridge and ran across the Abernethy reserve and over the Ryvoan Pass. Then climbed high and cut cross country (incl felled) to where Elle stays at New Year and then down towards the Loch Morlich Road and back to Coylumbridge Hilton. All going lovely until I got back pain (sciatic?) downhill running on hard surface. Had to let Marcus go on from the Loch Morlich Road and jogged gently back. Rest of body fine, not too tired but back sore.
Lots of chips made it better ;-)

Friday Mar 9, 2012 #

Run 46:26 [4] 7.8 km (5:57 / km)
ahr:132 max:163

Up to Grantown for the weekend.
Run from home across Free Church Wood, over the Spey and up to Revak then the tourist path up to the viewpoint. Going well after a steady (stiff) start. A good pace.

Thursday Mar 8, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Battered and sore from yesterday's race.

Wednesday Mar 7, 2012 #

Orienteering race 59:00 [5] 6.1 km (9:40 / km)
ahr:156 max:170

FVO Night Race at Barr Wood planned by Will Hensman.
A tough course and tough underfoot too, not helped by the driving sleet in the latter part of the course. On my own after a few controls and so toughed it out and got on with it. Caught Ross on final loop(who was outsprinted by Marcus for the lead) but made some poor nav errors so trailed in a few minutes down.
Great stuff and good banter at Pirnhall after.

Run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

Tuesday Mar 6, 2012 #

Terrain Run 40:00 [3] 7.2 km (5:33 / km)
ahr:131 max:161

Polmaise.
Parked at Quarry road and did a small path terrain run loop of the east and south side. Tough windblow in the south but got through OK.
The bikers are doing a great job of keeping the forest open!

6 PM

Pilates 1:10:00 [3]
weight:69.5kg

FVO Pilates & Conditioning.
Another good session, 14 turnout.

Sunday Mar 4, 2012 #

Orienteering 1:20:00 [4] 9.8 km (8:10 / km)
ahr:139 max:160

A trip to our new map Colzium, near Kilsyth, where Marcus had planned me a super dooper control pick. Absolutely loved it - this area has so much variety, some excellent pockets of details and some lovely runnable bits too. Great fun and had to cut the session short to meet M & J so the area's not small!

Saturday Mar 3, 2012 #

Orienteering race 14:59 [5] 3.3 km (4:32 / km)
ahr:169 max:178

Scottish Sprint Champs, St Andrews University.
Round 1.
Went pretty hard and stayed on track for most of the way, one banana exit and one poor route but no majors.
Should have won by 60 seconds but my red dibber failed to record (again!) at no3.
Pah!

Orienteering race 16:02 [5] 3.3 km (4:52 / km)
ahr:169 max:183

Scottish Sprint Champs, St Andrews.
Round 2.
Heart not so in it after Rnd1 but gave it my best shot. Made a few poor route choices on this one so lost at least 30 seconds. But pleased with fitness. Another leading time, by 45 seconds.

Run warm up/down 45:00 [3]

A great area for sprinting and some good courses - thanks to Clive Masson and ESOC team.
