Drammen Half Marathon. Planned to run at 3:29 pace, and then see how long that would last, and hopefully do a sub 73:30. Given my recent illness, was a bit unsure how well that would work.

In short, the pace was a bit too tough. Had good running speed for the irst 7km, but that was about it, halfway towards 8, glanced at my watch and it read 3:47 average pace, and I was like Damn. From then on, was passed fairly consistently. Think about 5 passed me, 3 in total who stayed ahead.

If bad running wasnt enough, had a couple incidents. between 9 and 10, there was a bridge to be crossed, however the "turn right"sign was little bit earlier, and led me right into a dock. Had the audience not yelled at me to keep running straight, then that would have been an embarrasing situation. Later on, I also had to run right into a parked car, as there were cars parked along the edge of a parking lot, with a road behind it, and suddenly me and the other guy had no clue where to go... THink that happened at around 16.8km

After 10km, there was a speaker guy who called out names of people going by. after 30 seconds passing it, i could hear him say something aobut the leading woman passing by. My heart sank after that. I kept thinking If i can make it to 19km mark without getting passed by her, Ill repay the avour and let Future mathias figure outt the finish. Worked well with another guy from around 12-13km. He was running fairly consistent, but i wasnt anymore. at 17km, looked behind me, adn the leading woman and another guy was not far behind. Thought i really had to step up my game. I knew i wouldnt be able to do 3:30s, but i also knew they werent doing that as well.

It wasnt untill after the bridge at 19.5km they caught up. Was really hurting, and had to start increasing speed as they were running faster. That last bit was some of the hardest mentally i ever had to do. Going out and then turning around going back the way we came from just really cuts you. Kept on thinking over and over again, as long as i make the 500m left, then the sprint should take care of itself. One of the guys did open a gap, but the woman was still behind, so that was encouraging. Ran hard the last 300m, but figured i wouldnt catch up to the guy in front, nor set a PB, so relaxed the last 100m. Just didnt have the will to do anything more.

Anyways, now i know what I cant do. Will be more stubborn to not go faster than 3:30 the first 5km, and I pretty much threw out the "race starts at 12km mark" reasoning.
