Bike on road (Bike home from work) 25:00 [3] 9.5 km (22.8 kph)

Run race (Blaise Blazer) 11:30 [5] 3.0 km (3:50 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 312

Race 2 of the summer. Raining a lot just before we started, so given that the race is half on tarmac footpath and half in grass/mud/terrain I opted for the Mudclaws over my road shoes. Bad idea. They're Mudclaws, not Tarmac-claws.

I was in the lead at the first bend, on tarmac, which I instantly found to be very slippy underfoot. Double bends by the old mill at the bottom were equally slippy, as was the first climb. My feet were slipping out behind me with every pace, but I maintained the lead to the top, and through the meadow back onto the tarmac. Back down the hill, I had to slow to almost a walk around the hairpins. Along the path down the stream was ok if I kept to the drier parts of tarmac, until the little bridge where we left the main footpath to run on a rocky/gravelly path.

I absolutley stacked it just before the bridge as my shoes just didn't grip. Full impact on both knees and hands, blood pouring down my shins. My race was over. Hobbled all the way back up to the club hut to be first aided, then Ifor kindly drove me home. Spent the next 4 hours with Laura in A&E waiting to have the gravel scrubbed out (with a toothbrush!) from under the 10p size flap on my left knee and being stitched up. Local anaesthetic as well as laughing gas, and even antibiotics for 7 days in case of infection. Got home at 3am

Lesson learnt: minimal ground contact from the Mudclaw's rubber studs = minumal traction on wet tarmac. Road shoes next time.

So that's no running or cycling for 10 days until the stiches come out.
