O - competition race (DVOA Fair Hill Gr X) 57:54 [5] 5.9 km (9:49 / km)

Ran pretty well despite messing up the first two controls a bit. Got stuck in the briars and lost 2-3 min. Legs felt okay despite coming right off skiing. Will have to start running seriously now that snow is gone. 1st M55.

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 55:00 [2] 7.2 km (7:38 / km)

Again around the Pines and some of the fields. A few bare sections, so it was out and back and not a full loop.
Had really planned to start running before my first A-meet, but it's tomorrow, so I guess not.

Thursday Mar 29, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 1:20:00 [2] 6.7 km (11:56 / km)

Upper fields and the Pines. Benign weather past few days has taken a toll on snow cover. Lower fields pretty well shot. Nice, sunny and warm. Poked around trying to find protected 50m alley clear for range.

Wednesday Mar 28, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 45:00 [3] 6.5 km (6:55 / km)

Clear overnight; snowpack froze up. Trail hard and rough, so hit it once with the groomer. Buried the sticks and needles in the Pines with cleaner snow. Didn't do the S field as it got hit pretty hard by yesterday's warm weather.
Bunch of laps around the Pines, figuring out where the biathlon range will go.

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 1:06:00 [3] 10.5 km (6:17 / km)
weight:162lbs

Another early morning ski; out at daylight. Temp only dropped to just above freezing last night. Snow was slow corn and dirty in the woods.
Will have to leave a strip of tall grass along the trail in the south field where cover gets thin first; might act as a snow fence.

Monday Mar 26, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 42:40 [3] 10.0 km (4:16 / km)

Morning ski before rain this afternoon. Chewed up the track a bit with the groomer and then got in a few fast laps around the fields. Best @ 3:25/km..

Sunday Mar 25, 2007 #

Skate Ski race (Saratoga Biathlon Center) 34:51 [5] 5.7 km (6:07 / km)

Ski-O at Saratoga Biathlon. Conditions good spring granular; warm wax conditions. Did Open class as it was the llongest course -- listed at 7.2 km. GPS showed I went 5.7, which is the first time I actually traveled shorter than the straight-line distance. Checked map; I think the GPS was correct.

Was 2nd by a minute when I left. Made two small errors at 20 sec each. Felt good for a nice run.

Skate Ski (Saratoga Biathlon Center) 37:00 [3] 6.7 km (5:31 / km)

A lap around the 5 km course plus a little more to relax and enjoy the day. Snow started to slow and get a bit slushy, so stopped after one lap.

Saturday Mar 24, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 1:17:15 [3] 13.1 km (5:54 / km)

Snow froze up nicely overnight. groomed a couple passes with the teeth down. Produced fast granular surface. Skied until it warmed up enough to slow down. By then I was skiing shirtless. Great spring conditions!

Skate Ski intervals (Kingdom Valley - skate) 17:25 [4] 4.62 km (3:46 / km)
shoes: Fischer RCS rock

Alternated 1.15 km intervals with the longer easy laps through the Pines. Middle two were fastest, then snow slowed considerably.

Trail Running (Chester Town Forest) 55:00 [3] 3.5 mi (15:43 / mi)

Ran the snowmobile trail up thru the town forest. Just firm enough to run; had snowshoes, but didn't need them. Trail would be good for classic skiing. Actually, there was enough snow for skiing today if I brought the classic skis.

Friday Mar 23, 2007 #

Cross Training (Daily hill run) 30:00 [3] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi) +100m 22:54 / mi
weight:164lbs

Out checking the maple taps on snowshoes with Casey. Decided to wander up the logging road and then up to the top of the hill. Snow froze overnight in the fields, but not the woods.

Thursday Mar 22, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Mt Taber Rd - skate) 1:00:00 [3] 11.3 km (5:19 / km)

Packed snowmobile route, warm temps so snow was slush. Lots of work and not much for speed. Should be a little cooler over the weekend.

Wednesday Mar 21, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 1:32:00 [3] 17.0 km (5:25 / km)

Late afternoon, after conditions started to cool down and set up. Had mild thaw today, high 30's and sunny, after 4F overnight. Nice skiing for the first day of spring!

Monday Mar 19, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 1:17:00 [3] 15.0 km (5:08 / km)

Best snow of the season. Trails firm powder with good edge control for skating.

Ran the Bombi without groomer out to the end of the logging road; first packing went well. Will hit it later with the groomer.

Sunday Mar 18, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 57:00 [3] 10.0 km (5:42 / km)

Tracks set up well from yesterday, so skiing was quite fine. Skied the AM and then groomed the trails a little wider, plus added some more segments up the hillside. Will let it sit for a couple hours over lunch.

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 1:21:00 [3] 11.9 km (6:48 / km)

Not enough time for the snow to consolidate, but smoother than this morning. Beautiful day, temps in the 20's and sun coming out.

Cross Training (Snowshoe) 30:00 [2] 1.0 km (30:00 / km)

Checking out trail routes above the south field. Not thinking about carving a full trail right now, but may clear the saplings that block the route. Then could groom when we have heavy snow cover. Would be a fun trail -- several knolls would make it a rolling descent and not quite as death defying as the lumber road. Also easy access to the top so I could groom it running downhill.

Saturday Mar 17, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 58:45 [3] 9.5 km (6:11 / km)

Got 14" snow last night, bringing our standing snowpack back up to 22". Some trouble plowing the drive, since the banks are over 4' and the snow just tumbles back into the roadway.

Groomed once this morning and let it set while we went into town. Nice snow, but track was too narrow for skating, so groomed again and resumed skiing. Snow had no time to set up this time and it was really soft. Finally gave up and groomed a bunch more for tomorrow. Extensions give a great 6' track. This summer will add flaps to the edges and get a little more width.

Friday Mar 16, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 1:08:00 [3] 10.5 km (6:29 / km)

Heavy snow all afternoon. By 5:00 had several inches on top of the existing frozen granular base. So went out and skated once I figure we had enough to smooth everything out. Pretty good at first, then got slower as cover increased. Expect it to keep coming down all night.

Great late season cover!

Road Running (Chester via PO) 50:40 [3] 5.0 mi (10:08 / mi)

Felt much better today. Same run as yesterday, just with more elastic muscles. Used GPS and tried to aim for 9 min miles. Okay except postholing up Cummings Rd stream bed (20-25 min/mi) and wobbling along the mud jello ruts of the rest of the road.

Wednesday Mar 14, 2007 #

Road Running (Chester via PO) 1:05:00 [3] 5.0 mi (13:00 / mi)

Temp about 40 and rainyish. Dirt roads are getting into mud season. Came up the abandoned section of Cummings Rd, which meant postholing thru a foot+ of loose snow drifted into the road/stream bed.

Glutes were really tight. Surprising, since they didn't bother me at all over the weekend. Very tight and sore. Hot tub helped after the run.

Tuesday Mar 13, 2007 #

Note

No training today -- busy tapping maple trees. Got 10 in yesterday and picked up 9 gallons of sap overnight. Have to gear up the boiling really fast or the bath tubs are going to fill up.

Installed the groomer wings and tried them as I drove around collecting sap. Worked well despite temps around 40F and soft corn snow.

Trail Running race (Snowgaine) 7:36:00 [4] 34.0 km (13:25 / km)

Day 2. Started 21 minutes late to make up for yesterday, including a penalty. Swept all the controls N of 392 around Hope Lake down to the river.

Used snowshoes for about a third of our travel, running shoes on roads for a third, and running shoes on packed snowmobile trails for the rest. Brought three pairs of skis, but the controls and conditions didn't make them the best choice. A number of competitors used mountain bikes for part of the course, but really didn't see that as too attractive, either (you had to keep the bikes with you and couldn't stash them by the road).

Ended up second overall behind Scott Pleban and his partner. Really happy with our result and the fact I ran 70 km for the weekend, with almost no recent running training.

Trail Running race (Snowgaine) 8:07:00 [4] 36.0 km (13:32 / km)

Day 1 of CNYO Snowgaine with Charlie Leonard at Hope Lake. Spent the day across the road clearing almost all the controls beyond Greek Peak. Good snow cover with temps getting above freezing. Ended up 7 minutes overtime for the day, but got an extra 60 point control, so it was worth it.

Cross Training (Daily hill run) 40:00 [3] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Snowshoe up around ridge, breaking some new trail. Remains cold at -10F. No wind so the outing was very enjoyable. Casey did have trouble, punching thru the crust in most places.

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 44:00 [3] 6.0 km (7:20 / km)

Night skiing, lumpy snow yesterday froze bumpy today. Temp almost back down to zero. Rewaxed LF4 from HF8; much better, but still slow on the windblown powder. Lots of work and not much speed today.

Wednesday Mar 7, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 30:00 [3] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)

Frozen crust from the weekend, mixed with windblown powder. Snow temp probably still below zero (was minus 17F last night) and skis had wax for high twenties. So either slick on the frozen stuff or stopped dead on the powder. Stopped to groom it, which broke up the granular. Wax was still totally off, so called it quits with darkness.

Tuesday Mar 6, 2007 #

Cross Training (Daily hill run) 34:00 [3] 2.0 km (17:00 / km) +110m 13:20 / km

Morning snowshoe loop up around end of logging road with Casey. Trail broken the other day, so faster this time. Bitter cold, minus 10F and windy.

Monday Mar 5, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Prospect - skate) 2:07:00 [3] 22.5 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Fischer RCS rock

In Bennington today, so went up to Prospect after I was finished. Cold wind and blowing snow; about 2" ungroomed new snow that kept filling my tracks. Dressed ok and skiing was still fine.

Sunday Mar 4, 2007 #

Cross Training (Daily hill run) 45:00 [2] 2.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Snowshoe up the logging road the the far end, then back up to the ridge and down Dan's Dive. Ruthie and I did fine, but Casey was struggling in the deep cover (2 feet).

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 1:01:00 [3] 12.0 km (5:05 / km)
shoes: Fischer RCS rock

Groomed the new snow from Friday. Had dried out so it packed nicely.
4 long laps; 1 short, no poles

Saturday Mar 3, 2007 #

Skate Ski race (Rangeley Loppet) 3:45:00 [4] 49.0 km (4:36 / km)
shoes: Fischer RCS 1

Rangeley got a foot of snow Friday, and tried to pack it for Saturday's race. Got it packed, but no way the snow could set up. So the skiers quickly churned it up into 6" of sugar snow. First 5 km was really bad, like skating in quicksand. Then it improved a bit for the balance of the 25 km loop. The second lap was much better. The temp was warm, and the traffic consolidated the surface pretty well. As a result. the splits were almost identical (within 5 seconds) despite getting tired from all the work.

5km - 20.29
10km - 26.53
20km - 47.46
(1/2 - 1.52.27)
30km - 21.24
35km - 25.36
40km - 25.28
45km - 23.12
F - 3.44.59 (2nd half 1.52.32)

Big crash right at the start. Laid back and didn't rush, but right out of the start stadium was a turn and slight downhill. Somebody fell, and took everyone around with them. I heard the cries and cut along the side. The guy in front of me went down, and I skied just off the side of the trail to miss. Unfortunately, that put me in 3' of powder, so I got sucked down, too. Great way to start!

Thursday Mar 1, 2007 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley - skate) 26:00 [3] 6.0 km (4:20 / km)

Snow thawed and set up, so finally trail is firmly consolidating. Noticably faster than previous outings, even though I was taking it easy.

Had to get inside in time to watch Dan and the Atlas Ascender on WBZ's 6:00 news!

Ready for some more snow and sleet tomorrow. Then up to Maine for the Rangeley Loppet. Will be a real grind if they get the expected 18" of new snow -- no way it will be solid in time for Saturday's race. Could be a long 50 km.
