Trail Running (Northfield MA) 1:13:00 [3] 6.0 mi (12:10 / mi)

With Peter Gagarin in woods outside Northfield. Easy pace due to achilles pain after weekends workouts. Felt ok during run, then hurt after I got out of car at home. Will ice and monitor condition.
Also cleared saplings along driveway for an hour after I got home.

Monday Mar 29, 2004 #

Road Running (Cummings+) 42:00 [2] 4.2 mi (10:00 / mi)

Morning run. Stiff, got moving to loosen up after the weekend.
Spring must be here: the last snow melted off the roof yesterday.

Cross Training (Cutting firewood) 1:00:00 [2]

Fixed the chain saw (sawdust plug in the carburetor) and cut up yesterday's tree. Then loaded into pickup and brought back for splitting.

Sunday Mar 28, 2004 #

Off Trail Running (Local woods) 1:13:00 [4] 5.0 mi (14:36 / mi) +300m 12:18 / mi

Up to top of ridge and along to hill 1349. Almost all the snow cover has disappeared in the past week. Woods about 90% open now. A few surges up the hills and across sections of slash from neighbor's logging this past winter.

Also spent 3 hours cutting down tree along driveway. Started with chain saw, but had to finish with bow saw after it died.

Skate Ski (Skate) 1:55:00 [3] 20.0 km (5:45 / km)

Yes, there is still snow! Morning at Prospect Mtn. Even though the temp hit 60F and the top got soft, the skiing was good. Slowed down a lot once I started picking up pine sap on the bottom of the skis.
Probably the end of skiing for me -- hit 920 km for the season. Would have gotten more, but temps really warmed up in the beginning of March and that pretty much shot the snow.

Weight Training 20:00 [5]

Wall wgts 4 sets x 50
Pullups 8 + 4
Free wgts: squats, lunges, curl, bench press 2 sets

Cross Training (Splitting firewood) 30:00 [2]

Friday Mar 26, 2004 #

Road Running (Cummings Rd +) 43:00 [2] 4.8 mi (8:57 / mi)

Morning run; weather mild. Sap buckets overflowing.

Wednesday Mar 24, 2004 #

Cross Training (Downhill Skiing) 3:00:00 [3]

At Okemo with Dan. Had place to ourselves. Only skied til 2:00, but got in 22k vert.

Tuesday Mar 23, 2004 #

Off Trail Running 36:00 [3] 3.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Ran up hill behind house with Dan. 4-8" hard snow.
Burned up lots of calories, so came back and deep fried a turkey for dinner -- yummy!

Hiking (Putney Peak, VT) 3:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (36:00 / mi)

Saturday Mar 20, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Prospect Mtn, VT) 3:00:00 [3] 30.0 km (6:00 / km)

Skiing with Ruthie, Dan and friends. Morning, I skated and Dan chased me with classic skis; after lunch, he got the skate skis and I used my new classic RCS. Conditions excellent with 14" freshly packed snow. Good interval workouts with some terrific downhill sections. Temps started at 10F this morning and rose to 30's. Wax mostly worked pretty well.
Season total to date 900 km.

Friday Mar 19, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Classic) 41:00 [2] 5.0 km (8:12 / km)

Poking around field and woods looking for good snow cover. Thin in too many spots for a hard workout. Temp in mid 30's. Tried VR70 and it worked pretty well. Dan home for spring break and tried some skiing, too.

Thursday Mar 18, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Classic) 42:00 [3] 8.0 km (5:15 / km)

Skied 'til dark -- 6:30 now.

Weight Training (Wall wgts / pullups) 5:00 [4]

Wednesday Mar 17, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Classic) 1:02:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:12 / km)

Slow at first, then track settled in and got ok. Probably would have been better to set trail for skating, but wanted to try new skis so cut a classic track. Thin in spots. Snowed lightly all day, adding an inch to the 8" we got last night. Very light and fluffy, so packs down a lot.

Tuesday Mar 16, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Classic) 31:00 [2] 4.0 km (7:45 / km)

Snow storm in progress, 4" new snow so far. Packed and tried new skis. Rather tentative because the snow has not set and a few patches had no cover before the storm.

Monday Mar 15, 2004 #

Weight Training (Squats and arms) 15:00 [3]

Saturday Mar 13, 2004 #

Road Running (Grn Mtn Tpke) 1:33:00 [3] 10.8 mi (8:37 / mi)

Across GMtnTpke to Pleasant Valley and around back home. 4 mi paved, rest dirt road. Mud season! Roads rutted and lumpy, but fortunately still frozen this morning.

Friday Mar 12, 2004 #

Road Running (Chester viaCummings) 56:00 [3] 6.0 mi (9:20 / mi)

Route is 4 miles paved, 1-1/2 miles dirt road and 1/2 mile up abandoned road now a stream bed. So stream bed was soild water ice, which is great crampon practice, but kind of exciting in sneakers. Lost a bit of time on this segment. Better than getting feet wet in the spring muck when it melts.

Weight Training (Wall wgts) 15:00 [4]

Double pole 2 sets x 50
Diagonal 1 set x 50

Thursday Mar 11, 2004 #

Skate Ski 39:00 [2] 6.0 km (6:30 / km)

Early morning. Snow frozen up and all chunky. Should have gone out with groomer to make it passable, but didn't bother. More snow tonight? Might make it better. Otherwise, it's back to running.

Looking like it's going to be really hard to hit 1,000km this season -- have 843 ytd.

Wednesday Mar 10, 2004 #

Note

Went out to ski today, but snow was too soft, so tapped 4 more sugar maple trees instead.

Tuesday Mar 9, 2004 #

Off Trail Running (Willis Hill , MA) 1:10:00 [3] 6.0 mi (11:40 / mi)

Nice trail run/woods run with Peter Gagarin down in MA. Snow mostly gone down there; I'm still skiing at home. Working on running through woods and some slash plus hills. Seems like hard work, but then it's still early.

Note

Got another 1-1/2" new snow today, so dragged the skandic and the groomer out fron the shed and packed it down. Starting to repair the base. Will set and be ready to ski tomorrow.

Monday Mar 8, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 51:00 [2] 8.0 km (6:23 / km)

About an inch of new snow on top of a badly rotted base. Some sections were good, and others have grass popping up. Skiing slow and choppy. Ok for a rest day.

O - competition (Adventure Race) 2:30:00 [5] 25.0 km (6:00 / km)

Genesis Adventure Race at Grafton, VT. Lured into this by Joe Brautigam and my bro, who neglected to try it himself. Partnered with Tracey Olafson. She did a great job and we blistered through the first 6km skiing segment in 21 min, outpacing everyone after being way behind after the sprint. Age slowed us on the snowshoe/running section and we dropped to 4th. Then on the final ski section we passed all but Joe and Erin Olafson, who were done with the first of two loops before we started.

Initial snowshoe sprint ~1km 5:27
Transition including scramble thru pipes (had to be there) 2:52
First ski 6 km 20:43
Second transition including brain teaser 5:52
Snowshoe 7 miles and transition including bouncing ping pong balls into bowl (???) 1:47:00
Second ski 6 km 22:58 (snow was mush)

Ended up first Masters and 2nd overall behind Joe and Erin -- go orienteers!
Great fun and super prizes (new snowshoes plus other goodies!)

Also a great -- as in brutal -- workout.
Thanks Joe and especially Tracey for being my partner.

Saturday Mar 6, 2004 #

Skate Ski 12:00 [2] 2.5 km (4:48 / km)

A few laps around fields with Joe Brautigam, Viktoria and friend Jim. Snow slushy.

Hiking (Snowshoeing) 50:00 [2] 2.0 mi (25:00 / mi)

Tour up to top of hill and through recently logged area of neighbor's property.

Thursday Mar 4, 2004 #

Trail Running (Willis Hill, MA) 1:04:00 [3] 5.0 mi (12:48 / mi)

Trail, mud, snow, ice run with Peter Gagarin around northern MA. Chance to see how much work I have to do to get back into running shape. Fun running with company and getting feet all sloppy wet.

Skate Ski 8:00 [1] 1.0 km (8:00 / km)

Tried morning skiing, but snow pack was still too warm and rotten. Did a lap with the packer first, but that didn't help too much. Need some colder weather and maybe another foot of snow.

Wednesday Mar 3, 2004 #

Road Running 28:00 [2] 3.0 mi (9:20 / mi)

Thaw! Warm weather melting off snow pack.
Went for run down road, but everything is yucky.
