Skate Ski (Craftsbury Marathon) 5:05:35 [4] 50.0 km (6:07 / km)

Challenging course with steep hills up and down. Snow conditions great, but weather cold at 4 to 10F. Used VR30 and LF4/LF3. Some slipping on the medium hills, caused more by the stiff skis than the wax.
Felt ok, although couldn't use my back to double pole. Started to get a little sore the last 5 km, but by then it was the final chase to the finish.

Skate Ski (Classic) 1:45:00 [2] 16.0 km (6:34 / km)

Viking Nordic. Felt poor, like someone stuck an ice pick between my ribs. Just took it easy and tried to work it out.
Didn't help things by grooming trails at home afterwards and getting snowmobile stuck. Had to lift and wrench it around and point it downhill to get moving -- same thing I did to screw up muscle in the first place.

Skate Ski (Night -- classic) 52:00 [3] 10.0 km (5:12 / km)

New 3" snowfall, very light. Set track. Nice 18F blue (VR40) conditions. Rib cage strained again. Hope it holds up ok on Sat -- 50 km race. Taking aspirin and icing with cold shower.

Skate Ski (Classic) 1:55:00 [3] 17.0 km (6:46 / km)

At Wild Wings ski area Peru, VT with Brad and Eddie. Classic only. Conditions pretty good, but could use some more cover.

Skate Ski (Skate -- warmup) 15:00 [2] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)

Saratoga Biatholon Center for ski-o. Very cold -- subzero.

O - competition (Ski-O) 1:00:00 [5] 11.5 km (5:13 / km)

Trails groomed really well, but snow a bit slow due to frigid temps. Snow probably still at minus 10-15F as overnight lows were -25F. Missed one turn and had to climb back up 400m of hill. Otherwise a good run.

Skate Ski (Skate) 38:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:26 / km)

Post race workout back at Tom's, chased by Eddie and Brad with Tess (lab) nipping at my skis and poles. Cool down had to wait until we got in the hot tub -- I could learn to like this.

Saturday Jan 24, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 55:00 [3] 10.0 km (5:30 / km)

Skiing at Tom Wolski's in Cambridge, NY. Nice layout of 5-6 km of trails around property.

Thursday Jan 22, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Night - skate) 49:50 [2] 10.0 km (4:59 / km)

Took it easy because I've got a 25km race on Sat at Lake Placid. Ribs feel better -- can take a deep breath -- but don't want to push it today. Snow 22F with 1" powder on top; good glide.
Came in and found they cancelled the race because the temp is forecast to be too cold -- whimps!

Monday Jan 19, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Night - Skate) 1:50:00 [2] 20.0 km (5:30 / km)

10F slow. Groomed two extra loops in field, so now have at least 1 km to ski at night, probably more.
Rib cage sore; don't know if it's from a fall on Sat or just strain from lifting snowmobile to turn it around. Ok skiing, but have trouble taking a full breath.

Skate Ski (Skate) 1:02:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:26 / km)

Loosen up from yesterday. Some tempo work. First half in 33 min, second half in 29. Warm (24F), so snow has gotten into good shape with a little grooming.
Snowmobile pulling groomer lost all its power after I stalled it trying to go up Pook's Plunge. Guess I fouled a plug and maybe the carb. However, switched the plug from the good cylinder with the one from the dead cylinder, and now they both work fine.(??)

Skate Ski (Skate) 25:00 [2] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

Took a break in the middle of the workout to tour the Pines a few times. Trail is coming along, but still not in great shape for training.

Saturday Jan 17, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Warm up) 40:00 [2] 6.0 km (6:40 / km)

Windblown Ski Area, NH. Testing wax. Tracks not well packed and narrow, with thin (rocky) cover, so switched to older, classic skis. Temp about 20F, but ground really cold from last few days, so snow was much colder. Started with VR40 and changed to VR30.

O - competition (Ski-O: Red) 1:25:00 [5] 11.5 km (7:23 / km)

Fun ski-o at a nice ski area. Wish they had more snow cover.
Felt a bit tired and not quick. Maybe from all the distance I've been putting in.
Made a wrong turn going up the mountain to #6 and added about 1/2 km and extra climb to leg. Many took off skis on this very steep ascent.

Skate Ski (Cool down) 37:00 [3] 6.5 km (5:42 / km)

Tour with Kenny. Glad to see he made it up for the ski-o and is doing well on his new skis. Beat me by a couple minutes.

Skate Ski (Night - skate) 38:20 [2] 7.0 km (5:29 / km)

Easy rest day. Wind blown on packed powder. Temp a balmy +2F.

Thursday Jan 15, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Night -- skate) 1:46:00 [2] 15.0 km (7:04 / km)

-10F and -30 wind chill -- made for a brisk evening. Eyelids kept freezing shut on the downhill sections. Also made the snow drag and had to work for glide. Felt tired, but maybe because it took so much effort to keep the skis moving. Supposed to warm up tommorrow after it drops to -20 or so again tonight.

Wednesday Jan 14, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 1:39:00 [2] 15.0 km (6:36 / km)

Did extra loop in field and around pond so each lap was about 1 km. Then did some in the Pines, too.
Weather was cold at -6F, but was dressed ok so it just made the snow slow. Last night got to -20F and was windy, so I took yesterday evening as a rest day.

Monday Jan 12, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Night -- Skate) 1:44:45 [3] 19.5 km (5:22 / km)

Warm up/cool down before and after tempo ski. Stopped after first four laps and groomed the 1" new snow -- made it quite a bit better. Have a heat wave, up to 22F.
Kind of bonked towards the end 'cause it was getting towards 9:00 and I hadn't eaten.

Skate Ski (Skate -- tempo) 28:15 [4] 6.5 km (4:21 / km)

Decided to do ten laps at a pretty hard pace. Felt ok and reasonably smooth. HR around 150 for the whole time. Snow wasn't as fast as last week's groomed granular.

Sunday Jan 11, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 1:20:00 [3] 17.0 km (4:42 / km)

Fields trail. Much better today with LF4 cold glide wax on skis, plus temp up to +8F. Last third was noticeably faster as we got a slight dusting of new powder. Lot less work than yesterday.

Skate Ski (Skate/classic) 1:06:00 [2] 5.0 km (13:12 / km)

Broke up long workout with 4 laps in the Pines and a trip off-property to the end of the eastern logging road. Road can be groomed, but needs more snow.

Saturday Jan 10, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 2:00:00 [3] 20.0 km (6:00 / km)

Snow in good shape, but very cold - 0F. Actually that was the peak air temp; the snow was probably colder because it's been down to -15F or so for the past two nights. Had warm wax on the skis from last week, which was too soft for the sandpaper surface of hard crystals. Got a lot of drag and could feel it in the weak glide.
Includes 6 laps around the Pines via Pook's Plunge -- only shot off the dam into the brook (almost) once.

Skate Ski (Night -- Classic) 1:19:00 [3] 13.0 km (6:05 / km)

Chilly at about 0F, but kind of nice after the moon came up. Had the layers just right, after I added shells over my hands. Used VR30 on one ski and some old Swix Polar on the other. Both were ok, but the Polar actually had better glide.
Groomed the track, since my neighbor did a few laps on his snowmobile yesterday before Ruthie chased him off.

Tuesday Jan 6, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Night -- Skate) 50:00 [2] 6.7 km (7:28 / km)

Predawn morning ski; won't have time this afternoon. More fresh snow. Very slow, 23F. Watched moon set -- nice night.

Monday Jan 5, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Night -- Skate) 52:00 [3] 10.4 km (5:00 / km)

Picked up 3" new last night and today. Packed the field loops. Soft, but will set up tonight. Felt (and was) slow, but smooth and quiet after the granular we had last week.

Sunday Jan 4, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 1:06:00 [3] 13.5 km (4:53 / km)

Laps with Greg. One lap in the Pines -- needs snow; rest in the fields, still ok, but snow would be nice there, too.

Saturday Jan 3, 2004 #

Hiking 1:30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)

More gps mapping with Greg and Dan. Light rain overnight and gloomy all day. Snow soggy.

Last year did 420 hrs/1379mi run & ski.
Last season: 469 km xc ski -- expect to more than double that this year (already have 204 km).

Friday Jan 2, 2004 #

Cross Training 2:00:00 [2]

Morning spent cutting 24" mostly dead tree by driveway. I cut and Greg split -- about a cord of firewood.

Skate Ski (Skate) 1:07:00 [2] 13.3 km (5:02 / km)

Got 1"+ of new snow. Just enough to cover the frozen surface and stick when packed. Makes the skiing much nicer, but a lot slower. Relaxed today and just went for smooth technique workout.

Thursday Jan 1, 2004 #

Hiking 1:00:00 [1] 1.5 mi (40:00 / mi)

Surveying stone wall boundaries with Greg's gps.
Rest day -- tired from skating up some long hills yesterday chasing Greg and Dan.
