Some on road. Late afternoon -- getting dark in woods and tricky following trail.

Off Trail Running (Ma & Pa/Gunpowder Falls) 45:00 [2] 4.0 mi (11:15 / mi)

Running the boundaries of this area to check it out for prospective mapping. Nice open reentrant terrain with some rocks.

O - competition (Hemlock Overlook, VA) 1:08:11 [5] 5.9 km (11:33 / km)

Pushed pretty hard, lots of climb.
Ran well until map reading error at end caused a wrong turn and 5 minutes lost.

O-course Training (Patapsco Avalon, MD) 1:01:00 [3] 4.8 km (12:42 / km)

Leaves have dropped here now, too, and running is much better.
Tumbled over a log covered by leaves, however, and am lucky nothing popped.
Checking out features (wells, etc) for this Feb's local meet. Found a couple neat ones.

Note

Missed workout yesterday due to job interview in PA. This job stuff is no good -- already interfering with training.

Running to Cromwell Valley Park and back.

O-course Training (Cromwell Valley Park, MD) 55:00 [3] 4.5 km (12:13 / km)

10 controls. Mostly open now, some steep sections.

Wednesday Oct 24, 2001 #

O-course Training (Grt Falls / Bear Island) 1:13:00 [3] 8.0 km (9:08 / km)

Ran 18 controls today. The leaves are dropping and Great Falls is opened up for excellent running. Bear Island is fast running, but slow travel due to intricate rocks and knolls. Best navigation was working off of dry water holes and marshes.

O-course Training (Soldier's Delight, MD) 1:12:00 [3] 5.0 mi (14:24 / mi)

Ran 12 controls on Soldier's Delight map. Area has been cut over to reestablish grasslands. Also has succeeded in growing more thorns and briars. Not a good area to run in shorts. Had to pick through a couple of thick sections not on map.

Note

Planning to run on a different o-map every day for the next two weeks. Didn't realize how many maps we've got within a 45 minute drive.

Ran 19 control legs practicing map reading.

O - competition (Pine Wood Red Y) 1:03:00 [4] 5.4 km (11:40 / km)

No warm up today; foot sore. Taped it securely and it felt mostly ok.
Too hastey on the first control; had to do some serious searching -- maybe 6 minutes lost. Other minor bobbles later on, minute here and there.

Pacing errors two early legs; one weak route choice. Probably lost 7 minutes total.

Tried O-shoes for the first time since the Highlander.
Used new inserts, but foot still got very sore.

Climbed Mt Marcy from Slant Rock (2,000' ascent).
Weather kind of crummy -- socked in with no views.

Hike in to Slant Rock, Johns Brook Valley, from Keene Valley, NY.
Approach camp for Mt Marcy climb (1,800' ascent).

Very slow run on grass to see if my foot will bear weight.
Destroyed my R arch on the first Highlander road run Sunday
(had a previous minor injury) and then proceeded to pound it
to oblivion for the next 15 miles.
Today is the first day I can move around.
Foot actually works with two arch support insoles and an ace
bandage wrapped around it.

Running the Ma & Pa Trail along the Little Gunpowder Falls.
( In Maryland you don't call them brooks or streams, you call them
"falls", "runs" and "branches", in decreasing size. Below the last rapids, in tidal waters, they are "rivers", "creeks" and "guts" -- you really wanted to know all this, right?)
As for the Ma & Pa, that's another story.
