Trail Running (Stratton Mtn) 2:52:00 intensity: (1:52:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @3) 10.5 mi (16:23 / mi) +688m 13:37 / mi

Stratton Pond to Stratton Mtn and back down. Like this CW loop better thant the other way. Looks like this might be the best day this week.

Trail Running (Indian Arrowhead Preserve) 1:40:42 [3] 5.77 mi (17:27 / mi) +347m 14:42 / mi

Tried out a forest area I spotted on the way to Keene, an almost three hundred acre preserve. Nice main trail, foot traffic only, although signs of vehicles further into the woods. Secondary trails and old roads not marked and wandered off into the rainy wilderness. Saved by the garmin -- picked some loops heading in the right direction and eventually hooked up with the main trail again. Good, open forest; will have to try some bushwacking once I figure out where the boundaries go.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Upper body workout. Swinging chainsaw-on-a-stick around overhead trimming branches just out of reach. Opened up connector trail so more snow will hit the ground.

Roller skiing hills (Mt Ascutney) 1:25:00 intensity: (25:00 @4) + (1:00:00 @5) 3.79 mi (22:26 / mi) +694m 14:18 / mi

Cranking up Ascutney. Road steep, but in good shape for the first 2.2 miles. Then turns to old tar and chip, lumpy and bumpy. Very hard to maintain movement on rough steep grade. By the time I figured it was going to be like that all the way to the top I was in too deep to quit. Glorious pursuit of stupid objectives. Certainly entertained all the leaf peepers driving up the mountain.

Made lots of stops on way up; time is just the action part.

Road Running (Mt Ascutney \>) 52:57 [2] 3.56 mi (14:52 / mi)

I may be dumb, but not stupid. Changed to running shoes and jogged back to the bottom. Did have the penalty of a pack to carry stuff up and then the boots and roller skis back down, but like I said, I'm not (too) stupid and am not about to roller ski down a 20% grade.

Trail Running (Windmill Ridge) 2:01:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @2) + (1:01:00 @3) 8.0 mi (15:07 / mi) +456m 12:51 / mi

From Athens cemetery up Hemlock trail to ridge and N to end. Then a mile bushwack to NE side of ridge with a CrackerJack compass that couldn't decide which way to point N. Hit Bemis road to Nature trail and followed to trail over Bemis hill and down to Cambridgeport. Then a 3 mile road run in the dark back to car.

Went well except last mile on ridge was blazed in paint the same color as lichen which disappeared in the dusk. Before that, ridge was glorious in the sunset with trees in full color.

Lost satellite contact a few times.

Trail Running hills (Wantastiquet Mtn) 58:59 intensity: (27:00 @2) + (31:59 @4) 4.0 mi (14:45 / mi) +329m 11:45 / mi
weight:161lbs

Last minute trip down to Shelburne Falls. Stopped in Brattleboro on the way back. Pushed on the way up, took it easy coming back down. Late lunch before run. McDouble ran out about half way back down. Guess I should have had a McTriple.

Roller skiing (Rte 11) 1:05:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (40:00 @3) 8.79 mi (7:24 / mi) +159m 7:00 / mi

Felt relaxed. No pole, double pole, V1.

Road Running (Chester) 58:14 [3] 6.0 mi (9:42 / mi)
weight:162lbs

No lunch; low energy. Knees a little achy from Sunday. Easy recovery run, waiting for tomorrow to get better.
Decided to drop some weight over the next month.

Sunday Sep 19, 2010 #

Road Running warm up/down 38:00 [2] 4.0 mi (9:30 / mi)

Ran course, checked distance -- right on.
8 AM

Road Race race (Killington 5K) 22:42 [5] 3.08 mi (7:22 / mi) +18m 7:14 / mi

Flat course on smooth dirt road in "downtown" Killiington. Out and back with a few slight rises. Started hard and held pace until I hit the rises on the return. Was 12 of 350 overall, 2nd in geezer class.

Roller skiing 1:02:00 [2] 8.99 mi (6:54 / mi) +36m 6:49 / mi

Road trip to ski with Ali and Alex. Nice flat Mass river road, but had lumpy chip and tar pavement. Good outing with fun company. Stopped at nearby Gail and Peter's afterwards.

Thursday Sep 16, 2010 #

Note

Rain. Good day for recovery.

Trail Running long (Putney Ridge) 2:44:11 [2] 10.3 mi (15:56 / mi) +604m 13:29 / mi

From Putney Mtn along the West Cliff trail and on to the Pinnacle. Back by the Main trail. Cold wind coming over the ridge line.

Flushed a fox from 20' off and ran past 4 turkeys as well. Flock of hawk spotters on top of Putney Mtn.

Monday Sep 13, 2010 #

Road Running (Chester) 59:20 [2] 6.0 mi (9:53 / mi)

Recovery day, easy run around town. Aches from the weekend, mostly sore muscles and not joints.

Sunday Sep 12, 2010 #

7 AM

Roller skiing (Pawtuckaway) 53:39 [0] 5.88 mi (9:07 / mi) +27m 9:00 / mi

Early laps around the park roads. Surface lumpy, but passable. Then discovered they just repaved the beach parking lot. Loops around the parking islands, great fun.
10 AM

O - competition race 1:22:20 [3] 5.71 km (14:26 / km) +141m 12:50 / km

Green course today. More careful and deliberate. Good for the first half, then got tired and drifted off the bearing several times to ill effect.

12 PM

O - competition race (Pawtuckaway) 2:08:57 [3] 8.01 km (16:06 / km) +139m 14:49 / km

Red course. First o-race sine spring. Off to a bad start with rough navigation to the first two controls; not something you can get away with at Pawtuck. Then into the boulder area for 3 butterfly loops. Each time I went back to the common control it got harder to find. Needless to say, lost lots of time.
4 PM

O - competition race 1:18:00 [3]

Canoe-O with Ali Crocker. Nice hard pull with a good partner. However, blew angle to one control and added lots of extra distance and maybe 5 minutes.
8 PM

O - competition race 2:48:00 [3] 8.53 km (19:41 / km) +163m 17:58 / km

Night-O. Herd pack in the beginning, then 3 or 4 following me. Actually did better at night as the super-light picked up the controls at a distance. Got thru the first 8 clean and at reasonable speed, and then a long run down dry swamps and off a couple bumps to the side. Wandered for a half hour with Bob Lux and 2 others, before I decided to skip it. Looking at GPS track, got within 10-20 m on at least two tries, including the initial pass. Finished off the last 5 controls okay.

Road Running (Chester) 53:07 [3] 6.0 mi (8:51 / mi)
weight:163lbs

Felt good, but time to back off for the weekend.

2 PM

Trail Running long (Pisgah St Park) 2:13:29 [3] 9.82 mi (13:36 / mi) +535m 11:38 / mi

Stopped by Northfield on my way back from Worcester, but it was closed per Alex. So on up to Pisgah, Reservoir trailhead. Up to reservoir, then Dogwood Swamp to Chesterfield Rd and Trail back to reservoir. Got to be my favorite trails: rolling snowmobile cuts thru the pine forest. Lots of elevation, soft trail surface and no traffic. This would be awesome rogaine territory.

Started to fade a little halfway thru, but fortunately found an energy bar lying on the ground and that got me going again.

9 AM

Trail Running (Root Beer Ridge) 1:20:52 [3] 4.72 mi (17:08 / mi) +253m 14:41 / mi

Felt good today, too, so hit this trail circuit. More tracks from moose than people. Today's track shows 0.3 mile less than with Alex last time.
Goal to do this in an hour flat.

Road Running long (Flamstead) 1:29:35 [3] 9.5 mi (9:26 / mi) +341m 8:29 / mi

Cool clear morning. Run first, then build deck. Beef brick from Friday finally gone, so felt good for run. Crisp on early hills up to long grade at mile 4. Then ground up that to drop back into town. Final climb home was hurting. Good workout.

Sunday Sep 5, 2010 #

Hiking (Windmill Hill) 2:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (24:00 / mi)

Hike with Ruthie and Casey along Putney Ridge, northern end. Ready for an end to end run, will take a little bit of bushwacking as the trail is not complete.

Saturday Sep 4, 2010 #

Road Running (Chester) 1:06:00 [2] 5.75 mi (11:29 / mi)

Back into training after end of summer break. Cooler weather, but didn't feel like moving (too big a chunk of beef last night).

Wednesday Sep 1, 2010 #

Roller skiing (Rte 11) 48:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Hot and humid.

Trip to Shelburne Falls this morning to check out a potential client there (very southern VT). Then back with some time to digest that Ruthie's car has blown up (new water pump $700, valve cover $1300, ABS module $3500), all to get it on the road for a trade-in. And was totally driveable on Monday. Decided to just give it away to Goodnews Garage. No more Saabs! And last week I put a new engine in my car!

So needed to vent some frustration, even it was wicked hot and drippy.
