Skate Ski tempo (KVN skate) 20:25 [3] 4.8 km (4:15 / km)

Groomed the trails for the first time since last week. Looked so good I gave it a quick shot before going off to the town meeting. Felt ok, but R ankle felt a bit strained.

Skate Ski race (American Birkebeiner) 3:40:37 [4] 50.25 km (4:23 / km)

Supposed to be a pretty warm day, but temp on the way to the start said -9F as we went by the bank in Cable. Not a good sign as I waxed for the 20's. It was probably +10F by the start and into the 20's when I finished. Glide not great in the woods, but picked up when I got in the sun. The last 3k across the lake to the finish was fantastic.
Splits for 10k's:
46:35
46:46
42:41
44:27
40:08
Most of the climb was in the first two splits.
Happy with the overall results, as it was a significant improvement over last year (40 minutes!).

Greg did a great job for his first marathon at 3:34. Ruthie did the 23k Korteloppet and finished 11th in her age group!

Skate Ski (Seeley trail) 40:00 [3] 8.5 km (4:42 / km)

Loose packed, not as fast as yesterday.

Thursday Feb 24, 2005 #

Skate Ski (Birkie trail) 50:00 [3] 12.0 km (4:10 / km)

Warm up checking out the Birkie trail from km 18 to 24. Nice, hard-packed powder conditions, fast snow.

Tuesday Feb 22, 2005 #

Skate Ski (Okemo XC skate) 38:30 [3] 9.0 km (4:17 / km)

Long drive back from Montreal. Had to get out and shake off the kinks. Went over to Okemo XC for some night laps under the full moon. Fast and easy; felt good.

Sunday Feb 20, 2005 #

Skate Ski tempo (KVN skate) 48:38 [3] 12.0 km (4:03 / km)

Ground up the frozen granular a bit more, but still rough. Some golfball sized chunks. Fast surface, felt good even if rough.
10 x fields 1.2 @ 5- (fastest 4:14)

Skate Ski 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Skied Pines -- no good until groomed more. Set bamboo stakes along track in Fields to help find route after tonight's storm -- 8" expected.

Skate Ski (Warm up/cool down) 23:00 [3] 3.0 km (7:40 / km)

Skate Ski race (Proctor Academy ski-o) 29:45 [5] 6.0 km (4:58 / km)

Fast granular conditions. Course set for lots of skiing and not bushwacking thru the brush. Couple small mistakes cost a few minutes -- like not realizing the scale was 1:7500 at first. Thanks Larry and Sara Mae for setting it up for CSU.

Skate Ski (Control pickup) 25:00 [3] 2.0 km (12:30 / km)

Retrieved controls from the east end of the course. Conditions not good enough to warrant lots of skiing around after the meet.

Skate Ski (KVN skate) 25:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

Back home checking out what I groomed last night. It froze up in chunks and was hard skiing. Will have to pulverize it again tomorrow morning. Expecting new snow tomorrow night.

Friday Feb 18, 2005 #

Skate Ski tempo (Ole's XC skate) 2:09:00 [3] 28.0 km (4:36 / km)

Not a bad area, but windy and chilly today so the exposed trails going around fields were cold. Snow ok, but needed grooming on some parts. Some of the trails had about 2" of unpacked new snow on top.
Shoulder felt good today after straining it poling the hills yesterday.

Skate Ski hills (Stowe XC skate) 2:11:00 [3] 31.0 km (4:14 / km) +600m 3:51 / km

Taught early workshop in Waterbury, so got to Stowe for afternoon skiing. Good fast packed powder conditions, best skiing so far this year. Trails in great shape.

Cross Training (Downhill skiing) 3:00:00 [2]

Day of skiing at Okemo (Valentines Day is a holiday for us this year!). Logged half the time as it wasn't too much work: this is a great cruising mountain. Good conditions; fully groomed from weekend and some fresh snow falling in the afternoon.

Sunday Feb 13, 2005 #

Hiking hills (Mt Monadnock, NH) 3:00:00 [2] * 4.5 mi (40:00 / mi) +550m 28:59 / mi
shoes: Mickey mouse boots

Clear winter climb with Ruthie, Art and Gretchen. Chilly despite sun. Went up Dublin Trail from north. About 4-10" new snow, but were able to bare boot it without putting on snowshoes.

Saturday Feb 12, 2005 #

Skate Ski (Viking skate) 2:10:00 [2] 22.0 km (5:55 / km)

Skiing with Ruthie, Art & Gretchen. Conditions thin, but not too bad. Snow kind of slow. I was skating and stopping at insections for everyone else to catch up; time only includes actual skiing. One trail wasn't packed so loose snow was a drag for skating; the classic skiers had it much easier,

Skate Ski (KVN skate) 17:00 [3] 3.0 km (5:40 / km)

Back home. Running Casey around and checking what I groomed this morning. Lots of chunks of frozen snow and smoe ice. Needs more work to get a good skiing surface. A few more trips with the Bombi and drag.

Friday Feb 11, 2005 #

Skate Ski (KVN skate) 53:00 [2] 10.2 km (5:12 / km)
weight:165lbs

Relaxed skiing on new snow. Yesterday's snow froze up fast but lumpy, with a couple inches of powder on top. Needs to be groomed smooth, but left that for tomorrow.

Skate Ski (KVN trail cleanup) 20:00 [1] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)

Got about 6" of wet heavy snow after rain last night. Tried packing it, but kind of made a mess. Skied around packing in holes and replacing divots. Too soft for much skiing today, will have to wait until the temp drops tonight and the snow dries out. Just as good as I felt really tired.

Wednesday Feb 9, 2005 #

Skate Ski (Prospect Mtn skate) 1:39:00 [3] 17.0 km (5:49 / km)

Snow soft, wet, slow. Lots of work and no speed. Pretty good cover, but definitely need the dump forecast for tomorrow.

Monday Feb 7, 2005 #

Skate Ski (KVN skate) 1:02:00 [3] 13.2 km (4:42 / km)

Better conditions than expected. Temps in the high 30's and snow rough, loose granular. Base held together ok for skating. Got faster as it got dark and cooled down to freezing. A few grassy patches, but field loop basically intact. Used my rock skate skis; still felt ok.

Skate Ski (Warm up/ cool down) 40:00 [3] 6.0 km (6:40 / km)

1k before ski-o and 5k after. By the afternoon the temp was up to 45F and the snow was sloggy under my skis. Arms died going up the hills and decided this wasn't any fun, so cashed it in for the weekend.

Skate Ski (Ski-o Windblown NH) 1:20:00 [4] 10.0 km (8:00 / km)

Course set by Aims Cooney covering much of the Windblown terrain. Used skate skis, but a good part of the first half was up and down narrow snowshoe trails. Classic probably was better choice for these trails. Took off skis and just ran those sections. Trails had thawed yesterday and refroze; I was early enough that some parts were pretty quick. Oh, and also some bare spots; since I was on my good skis I just took it easy and was conservative in my descents.

Skate Ski (Warm up) 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

Skate Ski (Tug Hill Tourathon) 3:20:14 [4] 40.0 km (5:00 / km)

Warm, 20-40 F, with a few thin spots, but overall good. Organizers did a lot of work getting the course in shape this week, shoveling snow in places. Usually Tug Hill gets dumped with feet of snow, but this year I guess Calif took all our snow.
Clear and sunny. Used purple klister, which worked well. Good kick. Glide dragged a bit when the course got soft, but only because my kick zone extended a bit too far forward.
Felt much better than last week at Craftsbury. Lots of double poling for the last 10k. Ended up 27th of 130. Splits 1:38/1:42.
Now can switch back to skating and train for the Birkie.

Skate Ski (Wild Wings classic) 55:00 [3] 10.5 km (5:14 / km)

Late afternoon stop at Wild Wings -- classic only area. Tracks solid, but ok with a little extra VR50 kick.

Skate Ski (Mt Tabor Rd classic) 35:00 [3] 8.0 km (4:23 / km)
weight:165lbs

Some extra time before dark so swung by Landgrove to ski Mt Tabor Rd. Major snowmobile route, but not busy during week. Road flat and nicely covered with packed powder. Gradual uphill out and good run back. Good change from tight turns of home course.
Out 21:00/back 14:19
