Unsuprisingly, I was broken today. Brain fully melted on the flight home and had a bad time on there and later on that night

Orienteering (Lahti-Jukola) 1:15:58 [4] 13.76 km (5:31 / km) +85m 5:21 / km

Leg 2 this year, was really looking forward to it, feel like I'm in decent shape again and healthy.

Dima did a grand job on 1st, handing over in 56th (Id given Ralph and Kris a big cheer when they ran in neck and neck - exciting stuff) - went out quite hard and was running past guys hanging onto the coattails of Helsingin Suunisjtatkajtjtjtjt, until I got stuck behind someone and he got away. The obvious route on this long leg was to hit the left path but I went straight with the group I was with and expected to see the path quite obviously. I crossed it without seeing it and blundered into a control, that wasn't mine. Knew I was not far from mine but decided to get out to the path to the SE and be sure. Went back in, hit same wrong control but was pretty confident of where I was now - Got the right one straight away, phew! Obviously Id lost some places and 3/4 minutes but not an uber disaster.


Down in 80th at 2, and rushed my plan to 3 a bit, and was heading off thr wrong way before I instilled some discipline into myself and trusted the compass, lost a minute or so here but got it ok. 4 and 5 I was direct and positive, but was a little wobbly coming into 5 as I was unsure of my exact loaction. 6 was a mess, people everywhere, too far left. Squashy caught me now, not suprised, Ive been a bit pants. Time to sort this out.


Nailed 7, 2nd fastest leg! 8 and 9 were clean and straight. Did my own thing on 10, not the fastest but got it without major problems. Was involved in a fairly major train now, and it wa ungaffled through to 13 (from number 4 it turned out!), just relaxing, keeping contact and working my way up the group. Spiked my gaffle on 14, but had to put in a big effort to catch the front of the train as theyd had kinder gaffles.

Naield my gaffle on 15, common easy 16, nailed my gaffle on 17 too, pace a bit higher now, surrounded my GPS vest teams (Lidingo, TuMe, TP, Pan Arhus etc). Up in the top 50 now, and pegging it. Elias Kuuka comes past on the track to the spectator, speed goes higher but Im holding my own. Stacked it on the track, headtorch came off (lost my spare here i think) but stuck in there round the next few before slipping into another control that wasnt mine off the group and losing Kuuka (30 seconds).

Staggered up the run in in the thick dust, 59th place and had survived after a dodgy start. Need to sort how long it takes me to settle in these relays.

The dust was insane around the race, looked like a miner when I finished.


Happy witht he result, a mixture of dodgy and very good orienteering. Willy dropped a few places, before old reliable Georg dragged us up a couple. The team slipped just outisde the top 100 in the end which was a little disappointing but it was very young, and we'd front loaded. More stability in the team needed, we are very capable of pushing for top 50 with our strongest team.
