Didn't think 20mins each way would hurt my shin too much.

Worst day ever: don't know why, but I'm doing really terribly at uni this semester despite studying as hard as usual. Really worried my average mark will drop way down and I'll be kicked out of my course...and then won't be able to do the postgrad study I want to.
And had sharp pains in my shin all day, no idea why.
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh so upset :(

ints at AIS, did 2 x 4x4mins with 2min recovery and 4mins between sets. time went pretty quick, and pretty quiet too which meant i mostly had a lane to myself :)
pity i couldnt be outside in the sun doing it!

had a while to wait for my bus to come (which never ended up coming at all, i think i should add) so just did some 'laps'
they had the radio on today so that made it a little more interesting......cant believe i spent almost 90mins pool running. what an achievement!

sooo keen to get out in the sunshine and do some exercise....so spontaneously jumped on my bike and went! ........very foolish. at 40mins both (strangely, usually just left) tibialis anteriors got sore, right up the lateral side of the tibia....worried this is my tibial stress syndrome (aka shin splints) being aggravated, in which case the muscle would be pulling on the stress fracture site (since this is how it came about in the first place).
though i could be wrong, maybe it's just a phantom pain......

anyway, i know i keep saying this but i will lay off the riding!

taking it chill (literally, tis cold today!). if i have to have 4 more weeks off i may as well make it count ;)
but seriously, i think if i try and smash out lots of cross training till then i wont be very mentally refreshed....i'd rather do nothing/whatever i feel like so then i'll be pumped and ready to run again when it's time! (plus not sure riding is doing me many favours)

not even a ride into uni today as had to carry my bone scans around and didnt wanna squash them til the sports dr had seen them haha.
man it was cold, wearing shorts was a bad choice!

happy with what sports dr had to say: basically i stopped running at exactly the right time as i was on the verge of making it much worse. think he wanted to give me a moon boot, but i (luckily) must have convinced him otherwise by telling him it didnt hurt that much (the truth!).
have to take 4 more weeks completely off (pool running ok), and then only start running again very very slowly i.e. 2x15mins runs in the first week back and build SLOWLY from there.
may have all stemmed from biomechanical issues....have had most injuries to my left leg so should sort out something there. orthotics may also help.

Pool running at ais, did 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1 all with 1min rec. legs were tired! Yesty must have been more taxing than I thought.
Actually really enjoyed it :)

Shin felt twingey during ints (pushing harder against the water)...bit strange. Don't think it could be making anything worse though!

caught the bus there, and got the times off google transit.....which were WRONG so i had to sit around waiting for my bus for ages! forget this not riding business...next time i'll take my bike!
good session, did 6x5mins w 1min rec.

dunno how much time i'll have to take off yet (find out tuesday), but am going to be quite generous. had a bone density scan not long ago which showed my bones are extraordinarily dense, and (quote sports dr) 'stress fractures should never be a problem for me'. so i figure if despite that i got one, my legs must have been under a lot of strain.....so a lengthy rest is in order!!

Sweated so much, must have been working hard!! Hopefully sweated out all the radioactive stuff they injected me with for my bone scan.

sorta the same as yesty (on the trainer). intensity 5 again as i havent really worked out how to take it easy! that prob makes no sense....but just spent the whole time going pretty hard. will do some proper intervals next time, just sussing it out at the moment.

bit of a mix-up with my appt for CT spect scan (not the first time they've screwed me over for an appt) so am getting it tomorrow morning instead. dont think i'll know the result till next tuesday anyway so guess it doesnt matter! gahh gotta be patient....

rang sports dr this morning and managed to score an appt this arvo. yay!
went for a small test run out of curiosity - shin doesnt hurt to walk on anymore but could feel it during the run. havent done anything for a week though....
hoping for some good news this arvo.....surely my extremely-above-average bone density means i cant get a stress fracture ;)

bike ints on the trainer. never used one before but they make intervals so good! you can push so hard.....though time does go slower, listened to a lecture i missed and it seemed to take foreverrrrr.

sports dr appt as expected: cant tell anything until i get a scan (having CT scan tomorrow morning) but could be a) stress fracture b) shin splints c) compartment syndrome.
doubt it's (c) - doesnt feel like that, surely can't be (a) either......so that leaves shin splints!
will have to wait and see......

Skipped all races on the weekend, which I'm obviously cut about. Sharp pain in shin when walking (very localized pain, right in the middle of tibia) so don't think running would do any favours, plus I'm getting very suss that this is more than just a muscular injury....
Plan to have a bone scan/MRI when I get home

Sorry to everyone who reads my log but more whinging about my shin is in order (for my record): v sore today, sharp pain when walking. Hmmmmmmmmmf

Event at cascades. I looooooove cascades, it's prob my favourite map in aus, so was super pumped to be able to do a race here.
Shin not feeling good so dropped out of 8km to 6.5km but even on the way to number one I was in a lot of pain so cut it a little short (prob ended up 5km?). May have been foolish to run at all considering how bad tib ant was, but really really wanted to get out.

Starting to find it hard to be positive - getting so frustrated. Need to force myself to have 2 weeks no running. Hope this shin pain isn't a stress fracture.........

Last day of Easter, on a really cool map today!
Started ok, caught Lauren at 5 or whatever the end of the long leg was and she totally threw me. She must have been standing so close to the control but didn't see it, so I thought it wasn't down there and looked around some more boulders. Lost a couple of mins.
Afew controls later Vanessa and ilka caught us and we all made a big mistake (no8??). Annoyed at myself cuz I knew I should have done my own thing but decided the others would know where they were going. Lost quite a bit of time there.
The rest were good - just really slow in terms of running speed. Feel so unfit and shin hurty :(
Need to learn to ignore others around me and trust my own navigation!

Really dissapointed in my results this Easter, hard to put my shin injury and consequent lack of fitness out of my mind. but feeling positive that I've still navigated well to most controls so should be getting back into it when my shin comes right.

long today but didn't run on account of shin being sore. wouldn't have been life threatening if i had run, but my main priority right now is to get it fixed - realised it's been hurting since January (!), which is a bit ridiculous.

also, sounds like today was a good day not to run....sounded pretty epic! though i would have loved to give it a crack....

middle / easter day 1
made a big mistake to no1: drifted on compass and ended up running much further than i wanted through the vague stuff. lost 4mins :(
the rest was scrappy but not too bad - some small mistakes and misses.
really enjoyed it though, especially the last section of rock clumps.
felt so bleh running again (aka slow). wore my orthotics today and shin/calves good! but feet got numb....
anyway, enjoyed the challenge which was my aim :D

shin didnt hurt during, but could def feel it after. not sure about running the long tomorrow....

easter prologue on a cool granite map.
had a pretty bad run - one large mistake plus numerous other small ones that would have added up to a lot.
most of all i just felt physically blah - felt like i was moving like a gumby and L tib ant / gastrocnemius not terribly happy either.
was quite upset afterwards for having such a bad result.....but after a bit of thought i cheered up. just want to enjoy my orienteering for a while, without any pressure of self-expectations on me...soo for the rest of the week am going to just try to have fun and not get too cut if im 20mins behind the winner or if i came last :)

Haven't done this or strength and cond in ages cuz I've been too tired to do it when I usually do!

mmm...heard lots of people whinging about this so wasnt sure what to expect...actually enjoyed the first half even though it was all through long grass and i felt stuffed running. and i made a big mistake to no1.
wore my orthotics today and re-opened all my partially healed blisters which was agony, and eventually caused me to pull the plug - as well as the fact that i had just made a huge huge error aaaaand was stuck in some horrible green.
felt like a massive softy but when i got to the finish heaps of other people had also pulled out....
stilllll not feeling very good about this session. should have hardened up!
