Paddling (other) (Pack raft) 6:00:00 [1]

Down the Cascade from just below the upper gorge out into the marsh lands.

Great great fun with lots of nice rapids for rafting. Got a bit whimpy in the lower gorge (continuous grade 3 for a while) and portaged most of the grade 3 bits. Again very happy to have single boat, the deck and cargo fly. Em and La were pretty cold and uncomfortable in their boats and good for my confidence to have to paddle my own boat.

Tramping 4:00:00 [1]

A fairly miserable end to 2016 battling through the marshes to the Barn bay track. I wanted to paddle all the way to the coast but their was a rebellion from cold paddlers. Lots of rain on the walk to Barn Bay and arrived just before dark. Things were feeling quite a lot like an adventure race by now.....

Tramping 13:00:00 [1]

Another long day over the Red Hills and down into the Cascade. Awesome views for the first bit then it misted out on the tops. Found an easy way down into the Cascade from the last of the tarns along the ridge. NZs best O-map is hidden up in these tarns.

Bush bashing with a double split paddle was tricky. Probably need a 4-split for this pack rafting buisness.

Tramping 10:00:00 [1]

Another long day from Martins Bay to the Pyke with a very heavy pack. Camped in the upper Pyke below the Red Hills.

Paddling (other) (Pack raft) 10:30:00 [2]

From the Hollyford Rd end to Martins Bay hut. Long but awesome day. Portaged the grade 4(?) rapid using the channel and jet boater track. River was high I think from rain yesterday. The single boat was awesome for the river and even ok for the lake. Just had to work quite hard to stay on the doubles' wash. The best thing was having the spray deck to stay warm and dry :).

Let em try out my boat for a few kms before the end of the river and Chris took us for a swim in a big wave train when the boat got well swamped.
