Running 20:00 [3]

race warmups and cool downs

Orienteering 50:00 [3]

Desert Orienteering Classic
Great course but I had to quit after a cholla cacti embedded in right quad caused spasm reaction for half a minute and then seized up the muscle so i couldn’t run. Thought it best to take it easy before afternoon race
2 PM

Orienteering 55:00 [3]

Desert Orienteering Slot Canyon Race. Way more challenging than last year. Technical, physical, lots of traps and lots of blood and bruises. Got trapped to #9 and then later turned around going from 13 to 10 (score O) and found myself closer to 14 so did that first and back down to 10. not the best order or execution but enough to win in the slot canyons again. :-)

Thanks for the great course Joe!
Highly recommend this race weekend. Next stop: Saskatoon

warmup

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]

Anza Borrego Desert Ram Race. Love this race. So much so that I missed my first ever Snowshoe Raid today (which is also a fave race of mine).

It was not as hot as last year but still it was a whopping 23C.

Long leg to #1 and I was shocked to be in the lead so I decided this was my only chance to win a split and punched in first. Then others made errors to #2 and I maintained the lead. Again mistakes were made by others and I punched in at #3 just behind Eric Bone. Why the heck is he not super far ahead of me I thought and then bam two jumping cholla cacti attacked me. Jumping you say? yeah its a thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-Qx7WjcwZI Get too close and they detach and attack. These two cacti decided to take me down with one attaching just below my left knee and the other at the front of my right ankle. So the more I tried to run the more the spikes dug in to the two joint areas. Took forever to get them off with lots of additional pain and swearing and by the time I did the pack had opened up a big lead. I tried to pull them in and took my skip early at #5 to stay in the hunt but worked too hard and then by the time I got to the box (30s behind Eric who hadn't skipped yet) the sun was starting to take its toll on me (again). And so like last year it was a death march to the finish. I wasn't making mistakes but was just slow. Though I missed CP21 late in a walk the line type section and I had to go back to get it costing me 4 minutes. oops.

I think the best two controls to skip were #4 and #18 (eric skipped 18) but these were also water controls and this here northerner needed his water.

Overall a great course set by Jeff and Nancy. I was 17 minutes back of Eric at the finish so you can see how tough the death march was. But on a positive note I was 10 minutes closer to him than last year.

Strength 15:00 [3]

Earthquake Core!

Woke up to a 3.5 magnitude earthquake. That isn't very big but when the epicentre is only 3km from where I was staying it was scary enough.
