http://www.orienteering.ca/2016/08/in-memoriam-bri...

I have many fond memories of orienteering with Brian - racing together, training together, and travelling together. On the race course he would tame the wilderness through his running toughness and navigational prowess...and off the course Brian also had an equally calming effect on his team mates through his laughter, compassion, infectious smile, and his whacky sense of humour. He was a great inspiration and a wonderful friend. My fondest memories are from racing the 1986 World Cup circuit together - making team Canada "Captain Bullit" t-shirts, eating baguettes on the top of the walls of a French castle, touring Dartmoor, trying to learn the lyrics of strange retro music (zoom, zoom, zoom, bop, bop, bop), playing practical jokes that luckily were in an era without social media, and, well, just discovering the world both on and off maps.

This summer, Starr and I had the pleasure of spending a few days with Tomas and Robbie at orienteering races in the Swiss Alps. They are two kind, young gentlemen who are wonderful athletes, and who have a great sense of adventure. Brian's warmth, sense of humour, and compassion shines through in his boys. My heartfelt condolences to the both of them and Marketa.

Starr and I are very fortunate to have known Brian and to have had him in our lives. He will be missed.

Running 1:40:00 [3]

Real Around the Bay run with Sudden, Trav, TheRunnerFormerlyKnownas#Turbo, Anvil, and LovesDanishes.

Then a fun time watching Salal, AG! and La Baguette in the WOC relay. 20th place but I believe this was the closest the team was to a top 10 finish (% behind) in over 25 years. Only 4.2% back or a mere 5'26" back.

Etoile and I will be hosting SMT followed by WOC women's relay viewing party at our place on Saturday at 8am. All welcome. Just need to wear or bring bring a maple leaf. We will have some Swedish goodies to eat. (Swedish flags and shirts also welcome)

SMT will be a 'real around the bay run' starting at 8am and running clockwise around Cootes with a Borers Falls loop option.

WOC: Relay starts at 10am

easy 'bent bike spin while reading a thesis.

Damn rain storm! We had an adventure running clinic planned for campus in the evening with 280 people. But then it rained. It rained hard and some residences flooded. So they cancelled at the last minute after we had about 10 volunteers ready to show off sprint orienteering. Grrrrr.

Great day for Canadian orienteering with Emily Kemp taking 4th place at World Champs (oh so close to a medal).

Swede wins gold by moving to Norway. Any thoughts on that Sudden? ;-)

GNordic with Alamageddon and Tarno. WilSmith and family and friends have added some sweet and gnarly in some places too single track off the Lynx trail. nicely done Wil!!

Note

Etoile and I would like to host a SMT and World Champs relay viewing party on Saturday AM at Bond North. Women's race with AG! starts at 10 and ends at noon'ish. Men's race starts at 8am but that would conflict with traditional SMT start time. Options: Go for a run earlier than normal or skip the start of the men's race. Thoughts?

SMT in the DV with Trav and tarno in a hot and humid sticky mess. Trav and I didn't handle the humidity all that well. But it was my longest low altitude run in a while so that is promising.

easy loops of GS.

**Hope Solo's comments are hilarious given how lucky the US were to beat Canada four years ago with that random
penalty call. Well done Sweden. a Canada-Sweden final
would be awesome!!

Why are doped Russians allowed to compete and win medals at the Olympics. it is wrong in so many ways.

Well today was supposed to be a day of Wilderness Traverse training but Cogeco incompetence (I first requested cable hookup in late April and still not done) I had to do some rock fit instead. Grrrr. SUcks too because (one of?) the WT trek(s?) looks awesome as always

rail trail. Strange ride. I started out and got trash talked by some road cyclists. Who trash talks strangers at 5:55 AM? Idiots. Then did a bunch of back and forth extra cycling waiting for Almageddon (he slept in). Then Al falls when he couldn't clip out and then Tarno got stung several times when a bee got inside his shirt. Now I know why Baloney calls it the frail trail. ;-)

quick update from Cdn sprint champs!
Canadian sprint champions!!!!
elite women: Emma
elite men: Jan Erik
club relay: DGL
1 PM

Orienteering 10:00 [3]

Legs were tired so I decided to sit out the sprint champs.
It looked like a great course and was won by Oivind (I'm
listed as mispunched but I never started -bizarre). Anyway by resting that allowed me to run the relay with our awesome JWOC juniors instead. Actually with Danish Dynamite in Hamilton I drew the short straw among the griz, Oivind and I to try and claim the club relay title. Extra pressure after Emma and Jan Erik (who still have two years as juniors) won the site titles earlier in the morning. Course was boring and easy but i got us around fast enough not losing too much time. Emma anchored to the win. a fun end to a week.

So that's it for O for a while. Time to rest the legs and do some paddling
