Note

Not sure this link will work in Canada but check out the BBC Scotland phone in show (replay) from Wednesday night with the theme "Orienteering" in the lead up to the World Champs starting Friday evening in Inverness area.

Speaking of WOC. AdventureGirl! will race in the sprint. First start is 1800 for the qualifier (1pm Hamilton time). Etoile and I just dropped her off with the Canadian Team Leader (Meghan).

[EDIT]: Emma starts at 18:12 (13:12 eastern).

Day#6: ...and keeping with the Islay single malts I can't buy at LCBO. Finlaggan Old Reserve. https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/finlaggan-ol...

Note

AdventureGirl! and Izzy bought me a cane and then googled how to use it. The cane made walking less painful and also made it possible to enjoy a wonderful tour of Stirling Castle. We brought the Race the Castles map with us which made it even more enjoyable. How cool it must have been to race through the castle last fall. Would love to do this if the Race the Castles ever happens again.

Lucky us. Today is the 548th anniversary of coronation of King James VI of Scotland. Who knew?!

Ran into PG and Gail in the castle and handed off the map.
Izzy and AG! then ran the non castle portion of the men's Race the Castles sprint course. Pretty town.

A day of icing and scotch while Etoile, AdventureGirl! and IzzyB hiked up the local mountain.

Orienteering 15:00 [3]
(injured)

Following Emma and Izzy on another Edinburgh sprint training. Really fun orienteering. Unfortunately I didn't realize how slippery the Edinburgh roads get in rain and my Salomon speed cross weren't up to the challenge. Fell badly and now I have a badly swollen right knee. Hopefully no meniscus damage. :-( Next time I wear my Inov-8s.

Orienteering 10:00 [3]

some random urban orienteering while Emma and Izzy ran Meghan's awesome control picking course. Such good sprint training. Followed up by a hike up Arthur's Seat. Love this city.

Note

Off to Scotland. In the airport in Toronto Etoile and I ran into a famous Westdale SS alum - "I must say"

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Started out late and quickly caught the back of the 20'ish riders in the Wastrel's peloton. They were cycling quite slowly and I was late but I didn't want to bike by them so waited until they took a different route and hammered along rail trail for first 2K to meet Tarno. Legs were tired when I met him so was happy today's pace was easier than Tuesday after the fast start. However, the late start and slower pace meant I got home later than planned and with Emma away that made for a Lone Starr.

Running 30:00 [3]

Last half of TNT.

Wednesday Jul 22, 2015 #

Strength 40:00 [3]

Full HammerFIT routine. I miss doing this workout with AG!

Tuesday Jul 21, 2015 #

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]

Copetown on rail trail with Tarno and Almageddon. I struggled to keep up as Al upgraded to ludicrous mode so I drafted off him for the first half (ie. uphill) instead.

Running 15:00 [3]

Joined the cool down at TNT. Great timing. ;-)

Monday Jul 20, 2015 #

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]

G Nordic trails with Etoile. I biked the Xterra course loop (no bites on the Rattlesnake or Weasel sections) then random loops searching for Etoile. She missed the short lynx cutoff and ended up doing the entire lynx.

Finished off with a choppy swim at Nobel beach.

Swimming 10:00 [3]

quite rough waters but very refreshing

Note

Two treks in and out of my met tower research site with GHOSLO. One to show off the research and the other to check that I actually had closed up the data logger box. I had. Faile.

Saturday Jul 18, 2015 #

HammerFIT on the Waddtage balcony. A little buggy though.

Friday Jul 17, 2015 #

Wednesday Jul 15, 2015 #

Cycling 35:00 [3]

Easy spin before good meeting with MAC XC coach to discuss partnership with DGL. (Canada needs a Uni Orienteering Champs though likely best to focus on sprint and sprint relay)

So when does DGL enter a team in Jukola?

Tuesday Jul 14, 2015 #

Later in the day since we hadn't received an email from AG! At all today we went into McDonalds and bought a minion.

We call it Emminion.

Note

13 hours of fieldwork research after waking up at 4am to watch AG! and team Canada at JWOC. Beauty of a day. blueberries were everywhere which got me through the day having run out of food at 1pm on a field work day that didn't finish until 9pm. Tired.

Thursday Jul 9, 2015 #

Strength 40:00 [3]

HammerFIT in AM then field work research with my undergrads at NOBEL in PM.

Wednesday Jul 8, 2015 #

Note

Unplanned rest day.

Two years ago I was at a wildfire conference and a researcher mentioned how lucky Canada has been that BC and AB don't have large wildfire seasons the same year. BUT he then said that when that day comes Canada is in for a rude awakening and a major crisis. 2015 is that year and we can also add in SK and NWT and AK to the burning.

Cycling 45:00 [3]

G Nordic with Etoile. Got thru sections 1,2 and 4 of Rattlesnake single track with no bites but needed full on antidote for section 3. Rode clean through there the other day but couldn't find any flow. Trail is perfect for similar to pace to Etoile on jackrabbit. fun start to day

Friday Jul 3, 2015 #

Paddling 1:05:00 [3]

First paddle of the year (finally) in G Bay with Etoile. thanks to Clan Smith for docking and boat storage services

Thursday Jul 2, 2015 #

Cycling 45:00 [3]

G Nordic Trails. Lots of fun. Rattlesnake is challenging yet rideable and the granite rock is way cool.

Helped the Get Outdoors Parry Sound crew (aka Clan Smith) prep a new section of single track. Then was the first to ride it and the first to fall on it ... And the second to fall on it.
