Skiing 1:30:00 [3] 5.51 km (16:20 / km) +32m 15:52 / km

At Georgian Nordic with Etoile, AdventureGirl!, Bash and 'Bent. Overnight snow squalls meant the track was soft and snow covered but that was fine for me for the first ski of the winter. Encouraging that the knees felt OK.

Followed up the ski with a snowshoe around Gula Stigen at the Nottage.

A case for the research that my lab group does (peatland restoration adaptation, climate change and wildfire vulnerability) just made it into the Economist of all places. ....wow, maybe the World is changing.

Note

One of the best rewards for hours and hours of volunteering is when we get a new orienteering map. GHO had spent a lot of efforts developing the sport and making maps outside of Hamilton over the last 10-15 years but hardly any new maps in Hamilton itself. So it is nice having the map I grew up on and did most of my training on as a kid remapped. Part 2 of 4 maps in the Dundas Valley re-mapping project is done. Ancaster Creek is only an 8 minute jog from Mcmaster.

with NP in the DV. Great fun to get out on a nice map.

Here is the race course from the very first Raid the Hammer in 2000. I think it is fair to say that the race courses have become a lot tougher (both physically and technically).

Note

interesting quote from this article..
http://www.thespec.com/news/canada/article/281466-...
.
“We used to be a nation that mattered internationally,” he said.
Now, he said, Canada’s position is, “basically, we’ll follow the U.S.”

Hmmm, imagine if previous Canadian Prime Ministers took that approach to international affairs wrt to the United Nations? The World would have no UN Peacekeeping operation and Canada would never have signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (which only Somalia and the US have not signed), ...

Then follow that up by yet another awesome article from Tyson in the Star which shows how out-of-touch Baird is:

OK so the National team coach and Canadian Long Distance Champ is in town for a few more days so we need to have a party before he goes. Here is the plan.

Saturday training and bender! OK here are the plans for Saturday.

8am: Dundas Valley run. Normal run but with some optional O sections built in. Run starts at the normal SMT start location. There will be some climbing. Will the King of the Mountain cap return?

11am: Hot tub time.

Noon: Lunch at Wadd Squad house (and Bender).

afternoon: optional O for those that want to test our almost finished permanent course in the DV.

late afternoon: Hamilton Bulldogs hockey game at Copps

leave a note here if you plan to make it (and what part of the day you can join in).
