Orienteering 30:00 [3]

ARX training at IH.

Wednesday Apr 29, 2015 #

Note

Fun morning watching (and a little bit of volunteering) at the 40th Annual Hamilton Adventure Running Challenge! Approx 1075 participants. Not a participation record but awesome weather and a number of very good results. Now the challenge to recruit more of these kids to ARX.

Running 20:00 [3]

Easy jogging during ARX. Hope to be able to ramp training up again soon but not likely until after Victoria Day.

Running 20:00 [3]

Long two days "at the office". Site selection and equipment installment in the Dinner Lake area north of Parry Sound (aka orienteering heaven). Today was absolutely spectacular. It was a long day of trekking but navigating across open rock barrens using air photos to some small wetlands with the sun shining and throw in a visit to Waddtage it is no wonder I had a grin on my face all day. Back to admin crap tomorrow though. :-(

Quick change into running gear at the Waddtage at the end of the day and I quickly got in my Gula Stigen debut of the year. yikes. Crappy time though :-( Time includes warm-up and cool down. I'll blame it on the extra climb in the parking area and the scaffolding I had to hurdle. ;-)

Unfortunately no time to visit the Smith clan but got together with Tyson since I'm renting one of his places for my students to stay for the summer.

TurboFIT with #turbo while a bunch of Bros watched.

ARK numbers for the spring just exceeded 875 and we are closing in on all-time participation of 5000.

Hey NEV, On the plane I watched this documentary of the Police. Very much worth seeing.

Note

Busy day in the garden at Bond Street moving dirt and rock. Given how much my back hurts I should log it as strength but I'd never hear the end of it. Speaking of gardens check out the pic that Wil too of our 4 acre garden in Nobel!!

Note

In the Vienna airport I ran into a bunch of kids with orienteering controls on their back packs so I asked the coach if they were going to a race. It was the Austrian youth team going to the World Schools CHamps in Turkey. The coach then asked why Canada doesn't send a team.

Strength 50:00 [3]

Full HammerFIT at hotel. In celebration of Bender's RtR win I drank two beers at dinner (that's a bender for me) while hanging out with a dozen or so Swedes.

Sunday Apr 12, 2015 #

Strength 25:00 [3]

HammerFIT but I stopped just after half way. #jetlag I should be well rested though since I got upgraded to business class but then I got delayed for 2 hours getting to my hotel since I ended up on the wrong side of the road of the Vienna City marathon. So put down my bag and cheered on the runners. I realized that Euro road runners wear just as ugly clothing as Euro orienteers.

Running 1:05:00 [3]

Easy jog on Westdale Trails and in Churchill Lake while the hard core adventure runners Raided the Rib (off to Vienna now).

DGL is hosting a training camp for Canada's JWOC team members from OOC and DGL. We had an enjoyable dinner last night with several of the ARX SPOTT members.

With a Graham, Waddington and Naess in that group of juniors it brought back great memories of racing traveling through Europe with Oivind and Brian in the mid 80's. Back then the unofficial Jr. World Champs was the Euro Jr. Championships. 1986 was our top result. We beat GBR and France and almost beat Finland and Denmark!! Having Oivind as a 31.03 10K PB runner on our relay teams really helped!!

Cycling 55:00 [3]

Quiet spin. Not only because Turbo wasn't there.

JWOC team and ARX training at Spring Valley. Jogged with Oivind while chatting about business stuff.

Original plan was to have the four JWOC participants from eastern Canada (OOC and DGL) meet ARK but a rainfall and flood warning required us to cancel ARK. Still a good start for this weekend's JWOC team training camp.

Skiing 1:05:00 [3]

Last ski of the season? with AG! at Georgian Nordic. A few cm of VERY wet snow at temps hovering around zero made for almost no glide. Ended up being a tough 'easy ski'. Short Lynx, short otter and partridge

Waddtage update! Upper Level panorama photo taken after an early evening tour of the house with Wil and his girls.

Skiing 1:30:00 [3]

Georgian Nordic with AG! JackRabbit, Lynx, Fox and Beaver trails plus some crust cruising (with a thin layer of soft snow) on some ponds and on some of out rock outcrop areas as well. Great skiing fun.

Raid the Rib course testing with Anvil. 1:45 in the nice stuff and 1:05 in the tough stuff.

I REALLY enjoyed this. The new 4-hour Choose your Adventure Run format allows us to do so many more cool ideas. While racers have had green, blue, black diamond and double black diamond rated CPs before, the new 'backcountry' CPs are among some of the most challenging CPs we have ever set in a race before. Partly because some (not all) are challenging navigation but also because with the ice storm damage it really does feel like the backcountry. Fallen branches and some undergrowth and saplings means you are always fighting against the terrain. Yeah, it had that Canadian Shield AR navigation feel to it (though the rock type is all wrong and there were no FDFs). I think the adventure racers are gonna love this race. I certainly enjoyed testing it even though some of the terrain is spoiled for Championship calibre orienteering now (quite sad really) but for a raid it means it is more AR like. Less pure running, tougher nav and you really will go out of your comfort zone in this race. I wouldn't want all our races to be like this and the half-raiders don't get into the super gnarly shite but again that is the beauty of the CYA format.

Note

Visiting speaker in our department today. From Berkeley. She shows a very interesting slide with the citation Legg et al., 2015. Wait a minute. I know a Ben Legg, an orienteer that goes to Berkeley! Quick google search and tada the speaker was Ben's PhD supervisor. Small world.

You do cool research Ben.
