waterfront trail with Sudden. puked at the end. ahh the blaze memories come back in chunks.

One of the interesting things about the Blaze run was linking to two charities (Muscular Dystrophy and Mitochondrial Disease Foundation). Contrasting what we were able to do with the research that Tarno does on individuals that suffer from either of these diseases.

So it was interesting when earlier today Sudden sent me the following link that highlights the mountain running of Jon Tvedt (who died in a training accident earlier this year). I knew him when I lived in Bergen when I was 12. The video (in Norwegian) shows how monstrously strong he was at mountain running and also shows off the beauty of the Bergen area. Jon was one of the World's best mountain runners. But the video also shows the struggle he had to teach his son to walk (his son is handicapped).

Very inspiring to watch:

Cycling 20:00 [3]

Easy indoor bike. Really happy that the Blaze wasn't this week given the hot temps and humidity forecast for the week. I still can't believe I was able to run for 10 hours in what amounted to just over 3 days. My knee would hurt so badly between runs but once I got going it wasn't a factor (unless running uphill) - well until I fell on the final run. Time to switch over to roller skiing though.

Blaze: Niagara Escarpment Race
4th night and my 4th night leg. One of the drawbacks of helping with leg assignments is that I didn't get much sleep. I tried to sleep at home but my phone rang non-stop. Total sleep since my 3rd night leg was only 1 hour. 10 hours over the previous 4 nights combined. And I was hungry. Despite that I was excited about the technical trail that faced Robyn and I. Mito was in the lead again and last time we ran together we held off much faster runners than us. BUT this was no flat leg. It climbed up and then dropped over and over again along the Niagara Escarpment and man was it slick. I should have worn Ice bugs as v. early int he leg I wiped out and hurt the knee.It became clear it was sore when I had to climb or step up steep rises. And to make things worse I lost a water bottle.
We made good time through the half way point but the final 3rd (7.5K) was killer for me. I had totally bonked. Dehydrated. But Robyn pushed and pulled and motivated me through it all. I was a bit disappointed but then kept thinking I wasn't even supposed to be able to run and that kept me going. Then our light went out with 500m to go. I think Robyn's words were "*uck". Tried running with a normal Petzl but that would have been suicide so we switched batteries and finished what would end up being the longest leg timewise of the Blaze. Derek and Wes picked up about 25 minutes on us but it could have been worse. I think Robyn and I must have run the first section faster than them.

Overall 4 legs - all at night which was a blast. Was really fun to run with Robyn again and with Joany for the first time but I also liked opening up on the nice trail solo at Glen Haffey.

Blaze: Niagara Escarpment Race
My third and fourth runs were supposed to be during the day but I ended up with a run in the middle of the night again. I started out solo at 4:30am just north of Glen Haffey and Hwy#9. It was very cool to run solo on a twisty trail with a powerful light. The start had some steep twisty climbs but no rock and some foggy, wet fields. I made a wrong turn before Hwy#9 and didn't see any blazes but saw the foot steps of Jack and Hans in the field and kept on running. Entering Glen Haffey I pulled out Bent's O maps and read along (running without maps is plain boring) and then I realized I didn't see any blazes. I had missed a turn again. I had to backtrack again so I picked up the pace going thru the Callahan road (about half way) in 58 minutes. (My goal was two hours for the 18 K secion). Moving to the Glen Haffey Dingle map I 'shouted to the top' and struggled over the style (turns out those styles are tough on sore knees). At the bottom of the hill there were some logs on the trail and I totally wiped out into the creek. Walked most of the uphilland then onto the roads. The roads were BORING AS HELL. I tried everything to motivate myself to run hard but realized I wasn't able to go much faster than the trail section despite dawn having broke (beauty sunrise). I ran the final half in 55 minutes. Didn't lose much time to the Viking and Dutch boyz.

Blaze: Niagara Escarpment Race
My 2nd stage was also at night. The trail was much tamer than the previous night with only gnarly rock near the end which apparently is where KateMac did in her ankle. Running with Joany on this leg was so much fun. We made a good pace and kept the team in the hunt after three hours of running.

Blaze: Niagara Escarpment Race

My first leg of the Blaze run was with Robyn on Bruce Peninsula. It was 14.3km with .3km of road and the rest of the leg was trail. We started out in the middle of the night and I have no idea what time it was. Right off the start Robyn lost our baton so we had to back track to the start to look for it and lost some time. The trail immediately ran onto a boulder beach which seemed gnarly at the time but would be pretty tame for this leg. After a few km and some sweet running along a field we climbed the Niagara Escarpment and moving away from the coast it got quite warm. Once on top of the escarpment we had a lot of rock but it was dry so we could keep a fast pace with the uber lighting system I was using. Then the trail dropped below the escarpment and there it stayed for quite some time. Rugged, rugged rugged terrain and mega rocky and overgrown and slippery. We were likely the first people to use the trail since the veg grew up. the trail also had the odd porcupine too (non quill throwing species). In the end we only lost 6 minutes to Derek and Simon. We had a great and fast run.
