Road Bike 1:00:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

From work out to Halswell and up to the top of the road then home again. Felt okay but that hill gets super steep near the top. It was really starting to get dark on the way back which is a bit scary when there aren't any street lights around and you only have a tiny little front light on. My bike is in serious need of a service.

300 club plus some other stuff after the bike ride. Took a bit of defrosting of my legs before they felt okay though.

Run 1:16:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Ran up to SOT from home (via the steps and Kidson Tce – about 18:40) to meet the Wednesday night run group then off on an adventure with us all following after Chris. Felt tough…so much for the short, easy run of Tane's email! But fun. I like running in the hills and seeing everyone but I wish I could keep up without dying. Georgia was kind and gave me a lift back down the hill again afterwards.

Then a bit later the top of my left leg was super painful when I tried to walk and I have no idea why. Seemed to improve the more I stood up and moved around but then it would go back to being painful every time I started up again.

MTB 1:17:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Managed to get out of the house about 5:30pm since I still had stuff set up from the night before. Almost dark but not quite. Feeling pretty good especially considering how I have been feeling lately. Some guy passed me on the road up to the track but he wasn't going super fast so I stayed behind him all the way until where it flattens out and he started chatting to me. Then on the second climb I was chatting and he was sounding exhausted. Ended up dropping him easily. Oh yeah! Cruised round Mt Vernon and the traverse track then the usual down through Vic Park and home. Can't wait to ride more of Vic Park but I'm not game enough by myself in the dark. Thought it was going to be absolutely freezing but actually wasn't that bad as there was no wind but definitely needed the 3 layers for the downhill. Took quite a bit of defrosting in the shower afterwards.

I set out to go mountain biking but it was raining once I got about a hundred metres down the road and I didn't fancy riding up into the hills in that sort of nasty weather since I'm still a bit sick and the rain was freezing. Plus I don't know how waterproof these lights are (probably not very). My biggest fear riding in the dark is my lights going out. Even bigger than rocks and downhills. Good plan since it bucketed down at one point after I got inside. Did my own boot camp instead and died. Did the 50 club. In a few weeks I reckon it'll be the 100 club.

Orienteering race (Waikari) 1:02:35 [3] 5.9 km (10:36 / km)
(sick) shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Ah, a map that is actually at my level! Fairly easy course but I still managed to stuff up #5, #6 AND #7! It was so cold and rainy to start with then there was a horrible headwind on the long leg. Went straight into my bones. No energy to run very fast at all but it was nice to get out despite all my complaining beforehand. But I did end up with a lovely cough afterwards.

MTB 1:10:00 [2]
(sick) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Nice little ride round Bottle Lake with Clare and Michael. I really wanted to ride up the crocodile and Kennedy's today but I wasn't up for it so I'm glad we ended up riding here instead. I just want to feel better again. I hate being sick.

Climbing (indoor - TR) 1:30:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: Five Ten Anasazi Verde

At the Roxx with Michael. It's been a long time and it showed! But did do some good climbing eventually. Got up several climbs in a row at the end once Michael got tired. Still feeling sick. Blargh.

Run 37:43 [2]
(sick) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Not up to Wednesday night run tonight which was sad because I really wanted to go so Michael took me on a nice gentle run along the river then up the hill a bit home again. Felt okay at a nice gentle pace but was pretty tired when we got back.

Run long 1:54:27 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Along the South Coast trail to the point then back along the North Coast to Anchor Bay then along the West Coast trail then back up and over the hill to the bay. Felt super long and I should have eaten breakfast first and headed out later because I crashed. I'm not used to running in the morning any more. Was sluggish and much slower than Saturday but it was fun. I didn't want to leave the bay to come home.

Walk 1:10:00 [1]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Nice little walk with Debbie up the hill and down into the reserve, along the predator fence then back up the hill. Typical Bolt/Wong walk where the Bolt leads somewhere well off the beaten track and, against their better judgement, the Wong follows! But there were lots of laughs as the long grass swollowed us up and what is life without adventure? Debbie did admit she enjoyed it in the end.

Run 1:06:24 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Afternoon run over to Tawharanui. Up the South Coast trail until Fisherman's Track then along that through the bush to Anchor Bay. up over the hill again to avoid the boring road then up and over into our bay again.
It's funny how our perspectives change on things. Before moving to Christchurch I thought the hills here were big and I never thought I could just walk out the dor and run up the driveway to start. I've always walked up. But it only takes just over 2 and a half minutes when you run. The biggest hill in the park probably doesn't even take 5 minutes. All seems rather easy when I remember it takes at least 25 minutes to get to the top of any hills round here. I've come a long way in a year it seems.

Just the Rapaki, traverse, Vic Park, Dyers loop with Michael. We were both feeling a bit smashed but ended up riding better than I felt. Can't wait to go all the way down through Vic Park again. I love riding!

Run 1:27:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Wednesday night run with a massive group tonight despite it being a ridiculously freezing cold southerly. Up the Crocodile and Kennedy's to the Summit Rd and back down. Felt a bit like death to be honest. I should have eaten more (not to mention had more sleep, magically not felt so stiff and somehow fixed my breathing which has flared up yet again). Was good though. Everyone is cool. Maybe one day I might be as cool too :-P

Strength and Conditioning (Work Wellness Bootcamp) 45:00 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Brutal. First up was the 300 challenge which I polished off pretty well but then it was straight into the dreaded tyre thing. Also modified the ladder/sprinting thing to make the sprints longer and it killed me. I should have eaten something other than an orange before I went because I felt like I was about to keel over.
5 PM

Run 46:24 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Run home via the river after bootcamp. Had half a clif bar before I left work and I could feel when it finally kicked in (about 20 minutes in) as I could finally run without feeling like I was going to end up in a puddle on the concrete. Won't make that mistake again. Some little kid decided he wanted to run with me across Spreydon Domain and along the road for a little bit which was funny. Once I got to the river I picked up the pace so it was a pretty intense second half. Dark these days.

We walked to and from the library after work which was about the extent of what I felt up to today. I feel like crap. Can't wait for this weekend :)

Orienteering race (OY2 - Apollo Hill) 1:30:21 [3] 5.5 km (16:26 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

ARGH! You know it's going to be bad when you're wading deep in mud by the first control. Anyway, had an absolute horror at #5 where I stupidly let other people let me think I was wrong and spent 20 minutes bashing in green stuff on the wrong spur. How dumb can you get. Then finally decided that perhaps I had been right all along so went back and found the control. Then proceeded to get stung by a couple of angry wasps in some not very nice places. I was pretty pissed off after that. Did try to run as much as possible afterwards to make the course end as quickly as possible which mostly succeeded apart from stupid #8 which felt way too high. Was WAY over the muddy swampy ground by the end. Grump grump grump.
2 PM

MTB 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

The Hogsback with Michael and Joe. We parked at Castle Hill village and rode up the road and the 4wd road first to get to the start of the track. Hard work riding into a horrible headwind. By the time we got to the start of the track I was exhausted and grumpy and had a bit of an explosion. Struggled getting up the hill as I felt so shattered. Then once we got near the top it got muddy so the first downhill was a bit of a slide fest. I had to walk some of it after Michael lept off his bike when it went out of control. Felt pretty miserable but as Michael pointed out, I am riding SO much better than before and it did get less muddy as we progressed.

MTB 3:00:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Big group of us today which was fun. Up the crocodile and Kennedy's (where we left the boys to do some heinous mission down then up Worsleys) then down the Flying Nun and all the way down through Vic Park to Bowenvale Valley then over to Fava for drinks then home again. Riding really well today but the second half of Vic Park is beyond my ability at this point. Awesome fun though so we will have to go back there.

Up our street to the one above then down Kidson and home. Wanted to go for a short run but I am still feeling quite tired and feeling like I'm getting sick so I should really be resting a bit more.

Run 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Wednesday night run. Up Rapaki which was pure suffering tonight then along the mtb track round to Farm Track and down. Actually probably feeling better than I expected. Felt worse yesterday I think. I have definitely come a long way since my first long rogaine. Then home to find Stephanie and Tim just passing on their own run so they popped in to say hello. By this time Michael had a delicious dinner all ready for me :)

So tough today...no fair! I was so exhausted by the end I felt all wobbly. Then had to bike home from the veggie store with the most ridiculously heavy pack which destroyed anything I might have had left so had to pike on riding with Clare which made me sad.

Monday May 7, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Super sleepy today and my left ankle feels a bit swollen but otherwise feeling pretty good which surprised me. Managed to ride to work without falling asleep then made myself go for the usual lunchtime walk to stretch the legs. Felt a lot better by the time it came to ride home.

Rogaine race (TWALK Leg 4) 6:09:32 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Cabrakan 3

7 of us this time and no Michael to look out for me which made me anxious because I was worried about not being able to keep up but it turned out most people had some pretty dark patches (even Chris seemed more tired) and there was a lot of steep hills to climb so we were all looking out for each other even more than before. It was tough and we were a pretty subdued bunch through most of the darkness. The middle of nowhere control brought us to a new low point...until Chris did a last scout around and finally found it. We did spend WAY too long on this though and it was getting pretty cold. But about this time (just before sunrise) someone pointed out the super moon again and it was incredible. We got to the highest point (#9) at about 7am just in time for the most amazing views. We were high above the clouds and it was beautiful and still. The mood lifted heaps after that (apart from the frustration at #11 when we couldn't find the damn thing). Running pretty much all the way after the sun came out with the speed picking up after #12. Got even faster once we hit the track at the bottom by #13. Thought I was going to collapse on the final sprint to the hash house. Was so good to stop and I was seriously considering not going out on the last leg because I was so exhausted but I'd come this far and it was only going to be another hour and a half of suffering.
10 AM

Rogaine race (TWALK Leg 5) 1:11:39 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

8 of us for the final leg. We had about 1 hour and 26 minutes or something and Tim had some ridiculously ambitious plan which freaked me out. We were all trying to move as fast as possible so there was lots of running (well, more like jogging at this stage). Fortunately Tim came to his senses and we only went for 2 points. Got back with just over 13 minutes to spare. Good fun but the run back along the road was rough.

Ended up winning which did surprise me...afterall I was out on the course for the whole thing so we were never going to be going all that fast. When we got back after leg 2 to find we were in the lead I pretty much panicked because everyone started getting a lot more serious and I felt so scared about being too slow. But a big team probably helped with the searching (and the recorders for rounding everyone up again).

Rogaine race (TWALK Leg 1) 3:55:35 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

Didn't get off to a good start (typical TWALK I guess!) where we all blundered around for ages not finding anything and then even with the recorders we had trouble rounding up the troupes but things improved once we broke away from the bulk of the teams. Got torn to shreds getting down to #5 which was entertaining but then got a wasp sting at the back of my knee coming out of this control and it was pretty uncomfortable for a while. The clues weren't very cryptic at all on this leg and they seemed to be pretty easy (after the first couple) which was frustrating as we'd just get there and suddenly we were off to the next one as those in front had already found it. Emily and I were complaining about how it was getting rather unfun just trailing along after everyone else. I did enjoy leading people astray at #13 though where the rock was marked lower down on the map but I wanted to check the top rock bit anyway and found it right away. Slunk off looking dejected and got a couple of teams coming down after us not checking the rock as they didn't hear our usual piping.
3 PM

Rogaine race (TWALK Leg 2) 4:55:59 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 6

All 10 of us again. Tim's idea of doing the loop in reverse (apart from #13 which we picked up at the end with the idea of trying to get away from Jamie's team) worked out pretty good. Had some hairy moments (for me) sidling along a really steep, rocky hillside to #8 but made it without freaking out too much. Glad it was still light at this point. After meeting the fairies who were going the other way we had to wade through a horribly cold swamp. Thank god it wasn't the middle of the night or frosty. I felt like my legs were icicles for a little while after that. Went pretty good with finding controls (mostly) on this leg although #2 was not so good.
8 PM

Rogaine race (TWALK Leg 3) 5:29:08 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Cabrakan 3

Still all 10 of us. New shoes for this leg which was like a new lease on life and I was feeling super cheerful until #2 which was quite possibly the stupidest TWALK control I've seen. The clue seemed simple enough (wheely tired) but when we got there it was like a field of hundreds of tyres. I almost just burst out laughing (it was either that or cry!). We spent half an hour searching with no luck (Rhys put it into perspective when he said that between the 10 of us we'd been looking for 5 hours plus Jamie's team were also looking with no luck). The next couple we were pretty much hanging out with Jamie and co trudging up to the saddle. Coming down again and then sidling round for what seemed like hours was so uncomfortable and I was so painfully slow I hit a rather miserable patch and was feeling like I was slowing everyone down but after a bit of a sit down at #6 I felt a lot better. Glad to get back to the Hash House though.

Apparently it was -1 this morning about the time I was riding to work. No wonder I felt so frozen. How on earth did I get through last winter? I want summer back!
4 PM

Strength and Conditioning (Work Wellness Bootcamp) 45:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Another good session but it went so quick I couldn't believe it when she said it was time for stretches. Heaps of punching because there was an uneven number of us and I went with the trainer so got to do that section twice. My back was sore again so couldn't do the whole 30 club. Had to do lots of planks instead but I'm awesome at those!

MTB 1:22:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Had to fit in the weekly mtb ride and tonight was the only free night left so couldn't go to Wednesday night run (and the weekly gossip session) this week. Sad. Anyway, managed to get Michael to come out with me too which was good. It was so freezing and I felt a bit crap 'cause my breathing is so bad at the moment (probably due to a super sniffy nose and how stressed and anxious I am about Friday). Up Rapaki where I passed lots of people and got on my competitive spirit! Then we bypassed the first part of the Mt Vernon track and joined on in the second half. Traverse track then down through Vic Park and down Dyers to home. I was wearing 4 layers (2 of them supposedly windproof) by the time we reached Dyers and I was still an icicle by the time we got home.

I'm a bit worried about how I'm going to survive attempting to ride all through winter if tonight was anything to go by. Definitely need to source some of those lobster gloves.

Freezing cold session today and I just couldn't seem to warm up. Lots of tyre work and other stuff. Fun but using a skipping rope in this kind of wind is really hard!

Was going to go mtbing with Clare after work but it was just too cold and we were both feeling wimpy. I'll have to man up and go tomorrow night instead.
