Road Bike 45:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Cruisey ride up to the SOK via Dyers Pass Rd with Clare while Emily and Michael sped on ahead. Got there in plenty of time to see the Le Race riders come though and do a little cheering then cruised down to SOT for a hot drink then back home. Nice morning but a little chilly.
3 PM

MTB 2:15:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Up Farm Track (far too much bike pushing in the bottom section on my part which was frustrating as well as bashing my knee with the pedal when I came off but definitely got up the steep top section better than last time) then round Mt Vernon, traverse, the linking tracks to SOK, down Flying Nun (rode heaps better...i.e. everything I rode felt reasonably good but the bits I walked do look super tricky and scary) then down Worsleys to home (a little bit scary in parts...the single track would probably have been more fun).

Orienteering race (Sprint Series #4) 19:39 [4]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7

Burnside High School. I was all panicked when I started as I knew Anna was starting 14 seconds behind me and runs faster so completely stuffed up the first control and wondered where the hell I was! After that it was okay although I took some rather interesting route choices! It was quite fun...probably in part because I did manage to beat Anna. My head was sore afterwards but I did manage to keep it thinking while orienteering.

Run 1:45:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 5

Last Wednesday night run before daylight savings. Guess I'll have pull out the head torch next week. Up the Crocodile and Kennedys then over to the bellbird then back down again. My tummy was stabbing me and I had dead cycling legs which wasn't good since everyone decided they wanted to set off at some wild pace. I was so glad when Hilary turned up so it didn't have to be a race again. It's depressing when what feels like a torturous sprint to me is an easy jog for everyone else.

I am not okay right now.

MTB 1:12:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

The usual ride up Rapaki, Mt Vernon, traverse and down through Vic Park, Dyers and home. It's weird riding alone these days which is funny 'cause I always used to ride alone back in the day. Still super headachey all the time but it was too much of an awesome evening to waste and mtbing is much less stress on my head (as long as I don't fall on it of course!).

MTB 3:00:00 [3]

We were going to just pack up and head off to Hanmer to go riding since the weather up at Denniston never seemed to be in our favour (I called the place miserable) but as we left Granity it seemed to show some promise (i.e. you could see the top) so we drove up the hill one last time. I fully expected it to start raining about halfway up the road but no, you could even see some blue sky! Michael suggested that since the TV tower at the top of Mt Rochfort was still visible we should ride up there. What a climb! I felt so dead and had to walk up numerous bits (but I did improve as we went along…still feeling so exhausted at any bit of high intensity exercise which I am guessing is mostly related to hitting my head) but the view from the top was pretty awesome. Plus the downhill was wicked (fancy me saying that…I sure have come a LONG way!!).

On the way back we rode the Sullivans and Quarry circuits. Sunk into some nice, deep sloshy stuff at one point but somehow still came out riding (but very wet!). Heaps of rocky stuff that I surprised myself by cruising down (apart from the "caution face" bits…neither of us rode those) and improved at riding up crap stuff. It was so much fun

Okay Denniston, I forgive you now.

MTB 5:00 [3]

Set off to go riding up at Denniston again and a couple of minutes up the road the hail came roaring down on us along with a serious temperature drop. We retreated. Hail makes quite a loud sound when it hits the bikes.
3 PM

Run 1:25:00 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 5

Up to the Britannia Battery and back firstly in the sunshine then in the pouring rain (and maybe some sunshine again near the end). Checked out the battery and a scary cave lower down. I'm glad we were running this track and not attempting to bike it. Would have been a tough climb and a super slippery descent.

MTB 3:30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Awesome ride from our place in Granity along the wild west coast on the road then up and over the gravel road to the top of the Charming Creek track then bumping all the way down the track. Bumpity bump over the railway sleepers. Beautiful scenery, lots of fascinating history and relics, cool riding and dark, scary tunnels! Plus the rain wasn't too bad until after we were already back and lounging on the couch! About 3 hours 30 riding but lots of stops to check out the scenery and read all the info stuff so we were out for over 4 hours. So worth it.

MTB 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Round a couple of the shorter tracks on the Denniston plateau in very thick mist (you could only see about 10 metres ahead of you) then cruising around checking out the top of the incline and looking at the history. Would have been awesome if we could have, umm, been able to see! Feeling quite tentative on the bike today.

Run 1:00:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 5

Wednesday night run with Michael while everyone else zoomed ahead and I couldn't make my legs go faster than snail pace. It was a very weird feeling. Didn't feel physically tired like I thought I would and I could jog all the way up the hill no problem (apart from when I tripped on a step early on, split my nail and completely freaked out about hitting my head…had to sit down for a moment) but my legs would only go a certain distance in front of each other (and it wasn't very far apart) so I felt like I'd been taken over by an alien trying to pass itself off as a human. We split off from everyone else early and headed back down the hill again because I was getting a headache. Had to walk some of the downhill. It felt so hard.

Yeah yeah, I knew it was probably not a good idea to be going for a run but I am so restless and frustrated and turning into some kind of monster.

Walk 15:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 5

Once we got out of the forest in the valley we walked the rest of the way down the road because I was over it.

Walk 55:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6

A fairly gentle with Michael when he came home. I wanted to go for a run but I am restraining myself. I'll attempt running tomorrow instead. Felt okay apart from when we went down hill…that wasn't good on the head. Got tired at the end as well. These anti inflammatory tablets from the doctor are mighty good but you sure know when they are wearing off. Fingers crossed it all feels much better by Friday.

Note
(injured)

Was going to run home from work today but since my head wasn't doing so good work sent me to the doctor instead. He said to stay away from our car because it clearly doesn't like me. I had to agree.

Orienteering race (OY1 - McQueens Pass) 1:22:14 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Struggled round very slowly. Very little running since every time I tried I fell or slipped instead and I was so scared of getting lost. Got caught in some patch of light green stuff on the way to #3 and it took me several minutes to get out of it (not kidding). I learnt my lesson. Blundered around on the next several controls. Nothing terrible (except for #4) but still lots of lost time. Things improved after #8 (apart from a bit of fighting with undergrowth!). It was a good course in that it minimised the climb as much as possible but I am so slow and sucky at sidling. SO hot today.
3 PM

Note

We went for a gentle walk and (quick) swim in the afternoon. It was like summer (although the water felt like ice!).

MTB 3:00:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

With Michael up the crocodile and Kennedy's then down flying nun, along the traverse track and Mt Vernon and then down Rapaki to home. Amazing weather. Struggled on the crocodile and felt all out of kilter on the new bike...now I have more of a stem and the handlebars are wider so turning corners and climbing steep stuff all felt so out of control. Got better though. Only 3 sections on Flying Nun I didn't do and was quite fine on the rest of it (a little too much skidding though...need to ease off on the brakes a little more!). Also rode the traverse track in the opposite direction to normal which was a big deal to me. In reality it was (mostly) fine of course! Definitely starting to get the feel of the new bike after a while and it is pretty awesome. I didn't want to stop riding! I can't wait for next weekend...

Climbing 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Five Ten Anasazi Verde

At the Roxx with Michael. Bit tricky and frustrating with the middle finger on my right hand all bandaged up but I did pretty well all things considering. Might be a little while before I can climb without some kind of tape over that finger though. Stupid me. I am now afraid of the boot of our car!

Run warm up/down 5:00 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Run to the start with Michael in the freezing cold.

Orienteering race (Sprint Series #3) 28:33 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Victoria Park. So yeah, couldn't find the first control for far too long (like over 3 minutes too long!!). I cut into the bush too late and ended up on the top mtb track and didn't work it out. It was so confusing! After that it wasn't too bad although I was so timid and consequently running tentatively and coming up short at controls in a fear of over running them. Cool course again.

Run warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Home from Victoria Park via the dog park and track. Little bit of walking down the steepest part of our street.

Wednesday night run up Rapaki, round mtb tracks then down Huntsbury, through the Valley of Death then down Farm Track. Beautiful night. I love running on the Port Hills. Paradise :)

MTB 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

On the new bike and by myself as Michael and tubeless don't seem to be working out all that well :(
Just went up Rapaki, along the traverse track then down the usual way through Vic Park and down Dyers. Didn't want to do anything too exciting or too long as it was late and my fingers hurt (don't shut your fingers in the boot...it is incredibly painful!). Plus the bike feels so different to my previous one and will take some getting used to. First notes is that it eats up the hills then takes off down any slope ridiculously fast. Also corners really sharply. All rather frightening but cool. Not sure if the back shock is quite set up right. Seems pretty hard. But it's all so exciting!

Sunday Mar 11, 2012 #

5 PM

Run 1:46:30 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 5

From home up the old Bowenvale track (following all the mtb zig zags) then up the zig zag track to Huntsbury, up Mt Vernon and round the mtb track then over the bush tracks, up the Sugar Loaf (more of a crawl but I tried to at least attempt to run/jog rather than submit to a walk) then down Latters Spur track and home. Michael ran with me for the first part while we studied the mtb track then I continued by myself for the rest of the run. So humid to start with then the wild weather started to come but I made it back before the rain. I had dead bicycle legs today.

MTB 2:30:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

With Michael and Tane from home over to the Crocodile and battling up Kennedy's in the wind then down the Flying Nun and Vic Park where I left the boys to go be macho while I went down the hill to home. The wind sucked my spirit quite a bit and my breathing was bad so I had a panic attack on the middle of a sharp corner on Flying Nun and Michael had to come rescue me. Sigh. But I rode most of the track (with some stops to retry). It wasn't even close to as bad as last time I was riding up here. I must have improved somewhat. Gotta get this breathing back under control. It's been so bad this week which would probably explain why I have felt so exhausted and down.

MTB 1:20:00 [3]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Fairly relaxed ride with Michael up Rapaki, Mt Vernon, traverse then down a different track in Vic Park then down the road to home. Was feeling a bit over everything today...it's been a long week at work and all the drama is really bringing me down. It all just spilled out at the top of a sharp corner where I had a panic attack and was in tears. Silly because I could ride the whole track. It was freezing again tonight.

Run warm up/down 5:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Warmup. Was too lazy and cold to do a warmdown but we did walk around a little bit afterwards.

Orienteering race (Sprint Series #2) 24:04 [4] 3.1 km (7:46 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Canterbury University Campus.
ARGH!! This map is so complicated for a first timer! Got off to a bit of a slow start trying to get my head around the map. On the way to #5 I saw Simon Bloomberg cheat right in front of my eyes by cutting through a building to get to the control. No fair! Then got so hopelessly confused at #6 that some random student tried to point me in the direction of the control (that didn't help). I was only halfway there but already trying to look for it. So stupid. Bumbled around for a few more controls then overshot #13 and completely confused myself again. The rest was okay but slow. This map is really awesome. It's such a shame that it's the uni map and that everyone here knows it like the back of their hands because it would make such an awesome place for a Nationals Sprint or similar. Cool course too. I'm loving the loop A, loop B idea because you just don't know what loop anyone is doing so you've gotta keep your head in the game (hmmm, quoting HSM...not good).

Walk 20:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 5

Up the hill to SOT. Thankfully Hilary was already there when I arrived so I had somewhere warm to wait.

Run 1:05:48 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 5

Wednesday night run up the Harry Ell, along the crater rim, down Flying Nun then back down Harry Ell to SOT. A complete contrast to yesterday's super hot evening with it being so cold we were all in polypros. Jeepers! Was okay until partway along the tops where I began to feel pretty tired and then pretty hungry. The downhill felt like forever. Still recovering from the weekend I guess.

MTB 1:45:00 [2]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

The usual ride with Michael and Stephanie. Nice easy pace today. And I can still ride the cool downhill bit...yay! Can't wait to start working on a new bit of track. Awesome hot night for a ride which was a nice change from spending the whole weekend freezing cold.

Monday Mar 5, 2012 #

Note

I was planning on going for a walk to loosen up all the achey muscles but there wasn't any time inbetween cooking, baking and veggie shopping!

Run race (North Canterbury Duathlon) 11:29 [1]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

First little run section with Rhea.

Road Bike race (North Canterbury Duathlon) 35:53 [4]
shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Second leg was the bike section where it was just me so I thought I would see how fast I could go. It was fun picking off people and it kept me going despite how tired I was feeling. Good fun! This time includes running the bike around the edge of the lake at the beginning and putting on my bike shoes at the edge of the road before riding off so I think I was probably riding for about 31-32 minutes.

Run race (North Canterbury Duathlon) 28:33 [1]

Longer run with Rhea. She did awesome :-)

Saturday Mar 3, 2012 #

10 AM

Rogaine race (Little River Rogaine) 9:58:59 [3]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Cabrakan 3

Little River Rogaine with Emily. It was supposed to be 12 hours but with the wild weather they changed it to 10 hours at the last minute...so last minute that we had only heard rumours after we'd already planned our route and then only heard for sure at the briefing. Not sure how much we would have changed in the planning though. Moving pretty well and mostly executed well (apart from blundering around and failing to find #42 even though I'm sure we were in the right place) but there were definitely some sub-optimal route choices! Going to #38 was stupid when we could have probably gotten #21 and #40 in the same amount of time instead and going to #50 instead of #90 was pretty silly.

Anyway, the weather was wild...I have never been in such crazy wind where you would try and run and practically be bowled over. Got frozen hands too which meant I couldn't hold the map for a few hours in case I dropped it so I would just take glances off Emily's and try and remember. We did work pretty well together which was cool. My new shoes were also cool. Feet are feeling quite happy for once despite being wet all day. Plus as an added bonus I didn't get the usual stomach pain I had been getting at the 5-6 hr mark. Yay!

Friday Mar 2, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

So tired so I even drove into work and didn't have a walk at lunchtime either. Was probably wise despite how lazy it made me feel.
